Can you just have the wine and not have to go to France?

psmith19581 h, 8 m ago

they cant give it away, why do you think even lorry drivers don't feel safe

Been reading the daily mail again?

Done 2 trips in the last couple of years. Nothing to report!!

T&C says "Excludes foot passengers, cyclists, minibuses, motorhomes, motorcycles, vans and caravan."
It's a pity cause I was planning to have a 1day trip to Calais by foot.

Don't feel safe how?

We did dover to Calais in the summer with our caravan and its fantastic.
Organised and no hassle at all.

Free flowing roads in and out of Calais.
Loved it and would recommend.

Eurotunnel at the moment better dea but no wine.

Went last Friday all OK, 6 bottles of Banrock Station, 3 red/3 white.

What's stopping you booking this cheap return and then not coming back the same day?

Not worth my petrol costs to get to Dover. Good if you're local

What are you on about? They've been doing these deals for years.

Is the wine disgusting? Chunnel deal is much better if so

Good to hear. Is there much to do in Calais in a day? Or the 7/8 hours you're there?

This isn’t true - they’ve run this offer in off season every year for as long I can remember. They’re just trying to get more people on board who’ll buy food in the cafes and booze/junk from their gift shop. No different to hotels that offer good deals in winter to fill rooms.

Calais - I go to the big Carrefour near the Eurotunnel exit (google maps is good for getting around if you have free European data), there’s also the big Auchen supermarket - but that’s a bit downmarket - a bit like Asda. I’ve not found much to do in Calais so usually go elsewhere.
We will often drive to Bruges (lovely) for a walk around and lunch then come home via Carrefour. Adinkerke is another day trip option if you want cheap tobacco.

If Eurotunnel have a better deal then I’d go with them as it’s a much quicker journey and the free wine on P&O is usually pretty ropey. We go to Carrefour by the Eurotunnel exit and buy loads of wine as it’s much cheaper than the uk due to lower tax. There’s also Majestic wine in Calais too - you can go to their website and check out prices and take £ cash to pay if you want.

Calais has a bad reputation. If you know where to go, there are some amazing beaches within striking distance, some great markets, fantastic restaurants, great walks, and for the kids a great water park and aquarium down the coast towards Boulogne. Fill up from near empty over there and save a shed load on fuel. All of that to say nothing of amazing wine, cheese, and other goodies. I’ve done this deal before and the wine is perfectly drinkable. Amazing deal.

Calais is a dive, even before the well documented 'problems' down there. It's basically Nottingham with sea but with even fewer nice areas.

Go a few miles out and things improve if you're wanting to have a wander around.

this is cheaper than a one day trip we are going on to the Isle of Wight as foot passengers

Can someone post the Eurotunnel better offer people are mentioning

why are they so desperate to make sure you come back the same day?

because this deal is just extra income in a half-empty ship

they don't want to cannibalise the more profitable tickets

We stopped at a wine warehouse in Calais on our way home at the start of September. Migrants were loitering and police were in riot gear moving them on.

We were glad not to stop for very long as my wife didn't feel safe. The kids (4&1 years old) were blissfully unaware.

Do I have to learn French before I can go ?

Did it a few years back. It was Blossom hill wine then and not the best but hay its free!

Been over for years for various reasons and we go to a massive Auchan hypermarket just outside Dunkirk (in Grande Synthe which do good wine deals. It's 25 miles from the port

Anyho - heat from me!

Yes, and you're not allowed to leave your house or post anything more on here until you're fluent

No. You need to learn jiu-jitsu.

I’d prefer that too and I don’t even drink

Ha...I don't know. We went straight down to Paris then across to Vannes and back via the Somme region in about 3 weeks.

Once you get close to Calais French may not be understood you could always try a multitude of other languages.

Don't stay around Calais itself. There are some nice areas nearby such as the bay of Wissant (nice walk along the beach looking across to the white cliffs of Dover). The walled town at Boulogne is quite nice too.

For grocery shopping I like the big E Leclerc just outside Boulogne (Outreau I think it's called) although there are other big supermarkets much closer. There are also some decent outlet stores at the Cite Europe shopping centre near the Eurotunnel terminal.

Oooh - La La !

Don't believe the rubbish you read in the papers!
We go to France / Holland 3 times a year via the tunnel or ferry and never had any issues at all.
Very nearly cancelled when there was the huge fuel shortage only to get there and not see one station without fuel. We always stop in the centre of calais first lunch (by market square opposite fountains) and again never had any issues.
There isn't a huge amount to do in calais but Bruges is a short easy drive and beautiful! Someone also suggested bolougne which is nice and naussica (sea life centre) there is less than 40 mins from calais.

But they're French...

Only £29 to go from dover to calais... some over there in calais would give out their lives to travel the other way around

I used this today and i got 3 bottles Red and 3 bottles White on the way out.

Plus a GREAT day out in Calais and Bruges. Shame about the earlier rain but was worth the two countries one day trip.

Thanks OP! Massive heat!
