How did they get so expensive?
I believe that they are no longer made in the UK and the quality has suffered as a result. There is another brand Solovair that used to make Dr Martens in the UK and now sells basically the same boots but better made and without the name. I do not think they are cheaper though.
Wore them all my life, but the cost of a resole is just way too much to justify. Once a good brand.

Solovair almost bench make shoes, that means that they are hand made from start to finish. They can be re soled, so environmentally a good idea and are made in the UK. They export as the rest of the world understand how important good shoes are......and they look better than Docs. Check them out,!

Made in the same factory in Wollaton were they made the first pair of Dr Martens under license. I'm sure the equipment is still the same, a factory tour will make you realise that they have worked out how to make the perfect footwear.
Used to wear these for work back in the mid 80's, quite a lot of us did due to the non-slip, oil resistant sole, plus they were cheap. Not anymore though, I think the price reflects the popularity, rather than the quality of them.....
I've gone from buying these to buying £35 army surplus boots, really good quality and a steal for the price. Maybe not as "cool" as a pair of Docs but I've grew to prefer the style.

Was having a bit of a clear out last Sunday and ‘found’ a pair of DM’s that i bought about 18 years ago and only wore a couple of times before putting them away and forgetting about them. Compared them to a pair my nephew bought last week and the difference in quality is really sad to see.
Just because these are cheaper here than elsewhere doesn't make this a deal, hence the coldness.

They simply are not worth this kind of money just for carrying the DM branding.
Stick to the made in England docs. They cost more but the quality is better than the Thai and Chinese versions. I’m just glad a mate works in the cobbs lane factory and gets a 65% discount for me.
