Dragon Touch Vista5 Action Camera - £35.86 Sold by AKASO Tech and Fulfilled by Amazon

This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:

I’ve been looking skeptically at reviews of cheapo action cams on YouTube for a while, wondering if any of them are at all usable and this one I think could be. There are a bunch of action cameras around this price on Amazon and most seem to be dreadful despite the suspiciously high ratings. When you get to the £90 mark you start to find cameras with usable electronic image stabilisation. One that looks to have usable image stabilisation is the Akaso V50X. As I trawled further through the reviews on YouTube I came across the Dragon Touch Vista 5 which seems to be the same camera as the Akaso V50X and a little bit cheaper but now a lot cheaper. Take a look at the reviews on YouTube. It’s not GoPro or DJI quality but to me it looks like a fun little camera for the price. Sound is the weakest part of the Akaso V50X and possibly this one too. You can buy the Akaso V50X external mic for £9.99 which YouTube tells me is compatible. I’m pretty skeptical about a lot of the no-brand tatt that litters Amazon but I’ve decided to take a punt on this

Does this have any smartphone app functionality where I could take still photos?

This would be a great help if you did. I would consider too if the quality is close to a go pro

The Amazon listing mentions an app. I suspect it isn’t much use as it’s rated 1* and it’s description on Apple App Store is all in Chinese. The best way to get images into a phone or PC is directly from the SD card I would suspect. It does take stills

Expecting GoPro quality for £35 might be a bit of a stretch. If you have a look on YouTube at reviews there is a Malaysian guy who does fairly comprehensive reviews on cheap action cams (Foto Sun) the footage he’s posted in his review looks ok. (Also the review from ‘Tech with Ken Robertson’ has plenty of footage from the camera)

I have a gitup 2 that has a Sony sensor, as does this, the footage is great at 1080.
I have a feeling that GoPro are similar to apple, you pay for the brand! Maybe I'm a little cynical.
I highly doubt this camera records native 4k, most likely up scaled. Think that's one of the main differences with v50 x. Good deal nonetheless.

ordered one myself.
I recently got the Apeman A79 - unfortunately the jaws of the attachments weren't able to get wide enough to attach to my bike so sent it back. Massively frustrating!

Still looking for one so will be interested to see what this one is like.
i have been keeping an eye out for a camera for my bike but they are so expensive and the cheaper ones have poor image stabilisation. i am just looking for a basic camera with good stabilisation so it doesn't make me fall over watching the video!

would also be interested in your experience when you get the camera OP.
Having tried quite a few of the cheap action cams and finding them all wanting in various ways I finally settled on a Yi Lite. Double this price but still way cheaper than GoPro. Very happy with it. Good functional app and great quality video, mainly shot from the bike. A good compromise IMO.

This may bee good. Not voted either way.

I bought the silvercress one on offer a Lidl this week for 39.99 but took it back as wouldn’t put any data to my card for some reason, got a replacement one and bought a new micro SD arriving today to make sure it’s not the 3 I tried for some reason. If still doesn’t work will take back and get this one
Lidl have an action camera on sale ATM for £39 which has some good reviews and comes with 3 yr warranty.
I just got an eken hi from Aliexpress here a timelapse photo

Could you take a pic of the Lidl cam and it’s box where it lists the specs. I had a look at some YouTube reviews for the Lidl cam and what I saw looks remarkably like the Akaso V50 Pro which is £109.99 on Amazon. If it is, that Lidl cam looks a good price. Love to do a bit more detective work on that!

Probably not a true 4k Sensor at this price, 2k sensor upscaling. Also in 1080p might give better eis. Overall good price for what it is. Seemingly not the same performance as V50X but a cut down version of it:

Looks like SD card makes a lot of difference! Ive got a 64GB Sandisk Ultra which I’ve had lying around for a few years. Should be ok, seems to support up to 100mb/s

I can’t quite make out the text. From what I could make out it looks like the Lidl one has a 13mp sensor which blows up my theory as the Akaso V50 Pro has a 20mp sensor. Still looks like a decent camera in the YouTube review i watched

Anybody got a link to the Lidl camera? I can't find it on their site.
I watched a few videos and they all look similar - basically the image is OK but the stablisation is very poor. Even for this price it's not worth it sadly. youtube.com/wat…TI0

why does it say stabilized on the video? has it been through a stabiliser software?

Here’s a couple of clips I shot with my Vista 5 when it arrived today. All are from a bike ride in the case attached to the handlebars. I’ll post something tomorrow using the camera out of the case which should produce better sound.

that doesn't look too bad. the stabilisation isn't that great as i am feeling slightlu dizzy looking at the video and you were on very flat tracks and going quite slowly.

would be good to see how it fares if you ride a lot faster.

are you pleased with it so far?

My bike only has a single gear so my efforts to get it moving probably show in the handlebars wobble. I had it attached just beside my left grip not in the centre so that probably didn’t help. I’ll try some walking and running out of the case later and post that. For £35 I’m pretty happy. I ordered an external mic for it which arrived today (£9.99) but haven’t had a chance to test that out yet.

i think it will suit my needs as long as it doesn't jerk so much. i would only ever use it on the bike so i am interested on how wobbly it gets when you ride a little bit faster. i don't ride very fast anyway, but your ride seemed very slow.

could you stick it in the middle of the handle bar and try to ride faster around the block?

i am not that interested in sound, just the visual. how long does the battery last? I assume it comes with SD card?

If your main use is on a bike, from what I’ve seen so far I wouldn’t recommend it. I had another go this afternoon and tried it in 2.7K which looked worse than the 4K. The 1080p has the most usable stabilisation on a bike from what I’ve seen so far. It doesn’t come with a SD card. Not sure how long the battery lasts. It comes with 2 batteries so been using one and then swapping over before running it down. I’d need to test that. I’m happy enough with it. It’s very cheap little novelty camera that takes somewhat stabilised video at 1080p. The 4K is nice enough to watch when not being used bouncing on a bike. I’ll put another video on YouTube later when I get a chance
Mine arrived yesterday and am pretty happy
Its no gopro or DJI - but for the money it is performing OK
4k records at around 55 MBits/s and 1920x1080 is about 20 MBits/s
I tried it as a dash cam and works OK as well - number plates on passing cars can be read
Image stabilisation needs to be on as too jerky without - also for driving use of WDR (Wide dynamic range) needs to be on to keep the video dark areas under control from the brightness of the sky
Connected to my ipad gen 6 fine with the apple usb adapter and the supplied usb cable to pull of the video from the camera
An extra bonus for me my old SJCAM M10 batteries fit this camera so now I have in total 5 batteries
We have upgraded from a SJCAM 4000. Massive jump in quality and functions. Very Impressed
According to aliexpress;

aliexpress.com/i/3…tml

It has a omnivision sensor and basic Novatek chipset so its not a joke action camera (many are much worse than this) but gives lowish performance levels. The 2.7k may be the true highest resolution and the 4k mode just interpolates that mode up to 4k. According to that spec the chipset is only 1080p 30fps but not sure that is true. It is possible 1080p 60fps is interpolated from 720p 60fps but I don't think so. Considering the aliexpress stated spec is quite low anyway I doubt its false information but the Novatekk chipset might be capable of a 1440p 30fps mode even if it can't do 4k.

Many omnivision sensor cameras are sold as Sony sensors as I think it is physically similar and electrically compatible.

If the sensor and chipset are well matched you can get good results but a great sensor with a poor chipset may give excellent still quality but poor video and a poor sensor with good chipset will give poor images but might give nice stabilised video albeit with slightly poor image quality in that video. I feel like this Vista 5 is the latter.

For best results look for something with an ambarella chipset and Panasonic or Sony sensor, you do see these combinations at lowish price points sometimes.
Looking at the various apps for the iPhone I downloaded the Akaso Go app and was able to connect to the camera with the V50X profile
Much more configuration and operation available with this app compared to the recommended Roadcam app

Edit - They updated the app and it no longer works !

Thread here gives more details about the Dragontouch Vista 5 stating after examining the firmware it only has software stabilisation and no built in gyro and a general comment of cheaper hardware but not sure which hardware.

goprawn.com/for…ams

Might be based on the Suntek icatch V39 chipset.

goprawn.com/for…ras

Yes does seem to be based on V39 which seems to be a chipset designed to look similar to the V50 but for more budget models with much inferior stabilisation.

I think it has the IMX078 which is a Sony 12 megapixel sensor.

This could be the camera under the manufacturer's own brand.

alibaba.com/pro…sLX

You can see its a bit of a con as the IMx078 is 12MP but they sell the camera as up to 20MP so happy to use interpolation to create fake resolutions. They may also use surplus CPU power to fake higher frame rates by interpolating inbetween frames. IMX078 is an old sensor and has some limitations in frame rates so they may be forced to do this. IMX078 came out in 2011 so is a very old Sony sensor that would be very cheap nowadays.

Also software stabilisation means it can only use part of the sensor image as the actual recorded image as it has to track the movement so will lose some resolution. Software stabilisation also means some other cpu intensive features may disable image stabilisation. I.e. if you set distortion correction there may be no spare cpu capacity for software stabilisation.

Basically this action camera is designed for a price point not a performance level. A true icatch V50 model should give far better results.
I was thinking of also buying the BRAVE 7 LE but the images look much better on the cheaper v50x ! As commentators agree, it's not even close. Does anyone know why? Does 7le have better eis than v50x or something else?

The resolution in that video looks lower than stated which makes me think the software stabilisation is stabilising and then re-upscaling the resolution. You should be able to tell by seeing if lets say 1080p60 without image stabilisation creates a higher resolution sharper image than 1080p60 with stabilisation. Still seems a good price though overall. Just about all action cameras are a compromise sub £50. I still like the xaomi Yi action camera which you see cheap but it has no stabilisation so you have to use a gimbal. I guess true V50 action cameras with gyro stabilisation should get cheap at some point but need to make sure you don't mistake a V39 for a V50 camera if you want that higher level of stabilisation without image compromises.
