Manufacturers use so-called tamperproof or security screw heads to prevent casual would-be hardware hackers; tamperproof torx, spanner bits and tri-wing being some of the more popular types. This security-by-obscurity approach can usually be foiled with a security bit set such as this one:

A security bit set and holder comprising a selection of 1/4" insert security bit types generally available on the market;The Draper TX-STAR and hexagonal bits have a hole drilled in the bit to take the pin of the security fixing;The insert bits (25mm long) are manufactured from 8660 alloy steel hardened, tempered with a shot blasted finish;Bit holder made from brass with chrome vanadium steel shaft;

Packed in a handy plastic storage case.

Box Contains
1 x 1/4-inch (F) x 1/4-inch (M) magnetic bit holder
3 x Torq bits, sizes: 6, 8 and 10 mm
4 x Spanner bits, sizes: no. 4, 6, 8 and 10
4 x Tri-winged bits, sizes: no.1, 2, 3 and 4
6 x Hexagonal security bits, sizes: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm
6 x Hexagonal security bits, sizes: 5/64, 3/32, 7/64, 1/8, 9/64, and 5/32 inch
9 x Draper Tx-Star security bits, sizes: T8, T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, T35 and T40

No T5....I'm out.
Security fixings? You mean the ones that anyone handy just hammers the middle pin out of and uses a normal torx head?
I'm wondering if this one has the T5 ... doesn't say though

Cheaper, by about a pound, yes - but delivery on top unless you live near a store. And they're not Draper.
Not meaning to sound like a thicko, but what is this for?
Ideal for those pesky pranksters, who until now, could no longer remove public toilet doors and fittings.

Haha - how funny, hotted for that comment.
Anyone know where to get a cheap 1/4" bit holder for these?

thanks for the tip!
I'm tempted by the Amazon gift wrap option on these - missus's birthday next week.

Special screwdriver bits for security type screws. So rather than your standard flat, posidrive or philips heads like you get on most screws around the home, things like games consoles, mobile phones or similar come with screws designed so that they cannot be opened without one of these bits.
Tri-wing for example is like the shape of a Mercedes badge and a standard screwdriver won't turn those screws. You find them on a lot of Nintendo consoles.
There is also this similar set manufactured from Chrome vandadium whatever that means... bit cheaper but possibly a bit less tough?

Think about it....

What's the chances that between you opening the page (which doesn't refresh automatically) and then voting (which refreshes the page) others may have voted in that time?

I doubt thats a good idea on delicate electronic equipment - plus what about any warranty? For the sake of a £5 I can't understand why you wouldn't buy a set.
Got mine last week could not believe how much dust and dirt had gathered in my xbox and laptop. Can be used on all consoles i think, cleaned out an old gamecube controller before selling it with this set.
£8.68 now
