Would this transcode 1080 for plex?

Not sure if this answers the question but i believe you can install Plex directly on the device as an application.

Plex is on the Drobo app store.

I use this for Plex 1080p direct stream to my Smart TV and ipad

Works wonders

Not according to this.

why would i choose this over a microserver?

drobo's big selling point is their RAID system that allows you to shove any old mismatched drives in and still be immune to drive failure.

This is its own internal backup. You can also hot swap drives of different types and sizes. This is a network storage robot, not just a NAS!

If this device dies, is it possible to recover data from drives?

if you have spare hardware you can achieve a similar capability using unraid. lime-technology.com/

indeed its more flexible in alot of ways.

for a 7 drive key its $70 or you can use it for free with upto three drives

for upto 25 drives its $99

i've been using it for a couple of years now and had no issues

This is an iPhone, Microserver is Android.

These are massively overpriced. The box probably only cost £50 tops. Better off getting a microserver and putting FreeNAS on it.

You ran out of your pills logy??

:-)

The parallel I'm trying to draw is that the Drobo is high quality, does what you want it to with minimal fuss, and good for a non-technical user -- but you pay a hefty premium for that.

With the Microserver you can get similar performance for much less money, provided you're prepared to get your hands a little dirty.

(I say this owning iPhone, iPad, N4 and N7, and loving all of them equally).

correct me if I am wrong but the Microserver is also only 4 drives? This is 5

and as said above, you pay for the GUI and the ease of setup

Drobo is fine for everything until the device dies and you discover you need another drobo to recover the data that was on it.

You would be better off with an HP miniserver and either FreeNas or Unraid....

Are so this is for the sheep with limited knowledge and like to look the same then.. Cool thanks

Anyone who buys this over HP Microserver has more money than sense

You can use drive pooling on a microserver for similar functionality unless I am missing something. I have heard good things about Drobos though but they always seem a bit too pricey to me.

Microserver can easily host 5 drives - 4 in the main bays and 1 in the ODD bay.

I guess you can say that about anything, Why buy a Rolex or an iphone when a Timex or a cheap android will do the same thing?

I bought a drobo. Worked fine... Then I bought a Synology NAS. Spend the extra it is REALLY worth it.

Could one simply remove my drives from my zyxel 325 and slot them into the drobo without losing my data?

ebuyer.co.uk are also this price at the moment.

Would highly recommend Synology. Installing a lot now and so easy yet powerful

I'd rather have a MicroServer any day of the week. It can be used as a NAS AND as a Server (I have ESXi on mine).

If you need a sturdy NAS then this gets the thumbs up. Possibly the best NAS out there. But for me, the versatility of a MicroServer wins it for me.

(Heat for the deal and the price)

By 'micro server' , is this what you guys mean:

box.co.uk/NOW…OCK!_HP_ProLiant_MicroServer_70_1341681.html?gclid=CLaE9pfE6rwCFSgewwodOrQA3Q

Really want to get one to have a central system for all our files that can be accessed any time from anywhere on various different devices (tablet, phone and laptops).

If someone could kindly list all I would need, this would be greatly GREATLY appreciated

Can anybody confirm that this does transcode 1080P? Mixed messages. HP microservers all good but need a good graphics card and a sata raid card to make it worthwhile and they can't transcode 1080p

Great piece of kit. Less faff than microserver if you aren't tech savvy

This is what put me off going for a NAS enclosure and the reason I went for a microserver instead.

NAS enclosures encode the info stored in their own propitiatory format, and if the NAS enclosure goes wrong, you normally cannot even transfer the drives into an identical enclosure to access them.

I very much doubt you could place the drives from this model into the zyxel 325 and access the data.

Says it's £401.66 now

I'm glad I read this. I won't be touching it, to think I had my eye on it for over a year now... what a wast of time.

I actually don't think a comment about the relative value for money of an item is out of place on a deals site...

Got 6 drives all up in mine (4 in the main slots, then a converter in the optical bay slot for 3.5"+2.5" drive.

aBSOLUTELY NOT... most NAS (like drobo) require drives to be formatted to their version of filing system.
This is Ok for fit n forget but I have heard the transfer speeds over network are quite slow.
Synology or Qnap do very capable boxes (still need blank drives tho..)

what are you trying achieve? a lower quality version ?.. n54l can and does transcode very nicely (without need of a graphics card?)
N54l has raid built in as does windows/linux.
Puny grx card needed for file playback 5450/6450/7450
