Not in stock though. 1-3 month wait.

If your main aim is mobile processing power then this is a good deal (the processor would cost about £160 of the price).

title makes it look like £421.61 for a cpu!

If only it had a proper GPU would be all over it =(

I'm on a 7741G now and it is literally that only laptop that I have ever bought and still liked after a week. Mine fortunately does have dedicated graphics though and some of the games look truly amazing on it.

Okay spec but no gpu or high res screen, nor bluray.

Just saying it might be worth it, to wait if you don't need a laptop for a while. With christmas sales, and 2011's tech coming out soon - its a bit early to parting money away for tech stuff.

Yes it's a one trick pony. They built it around the CPU so had to skimp elsewhere. But doubt you will find a sub £500 laptop with this CPU.

Nice apart from the maker!

I understand why some people are complaining about the GPU, res screen etc, but when compared to similar specs or even price range, not a bad machine. Very tempting indeed, heat added.

so tempted with this ...

This is the weaker i5-4xx series which have a more modest Turbo Boost than the ‘proper’ i5-5xx series.

i5-460M 2.53GHz with Max Turbo Boost of 2.8GHz
i5-540M 2.53GHz with Turbo Boost of 3.066GHz

So performance wise it’s half way between an i3 (no turbo Boost) and a ‘proper’ i5.
These are possibly OEM only so they get them cheap.

I think you're right there.

Personally I think this is a good price, but not an especially hot deal.

Yes the 460m is just a harvested 540m. Just wont have fitted in the 35w TDP.
As for price Intel don't currently list a price for the CPU but the 540m is listed as $257 for 1k unit price. So it only likely to be slightly cheaper than this.

I have this processor in my GX660r and I have to say at first I was worried that it might be the weak link, but although it is the weakest component in my laptop I must say I have been mightily impressed with it's ability to handle CPU intensive tasks, with it being a dual core processor with hyper-threading on each core you do have 4 virtual cores for programs that can take advantage of quad cores. To give you an idea of how fast this processor is most PS2 games that I have tried emulating have run with only a few frames dropped except in cut-scenes. And encoding in Handbrake of my dvds into MKVs for archiving runs at an average of 70fps and HD content encoding to MKV runs at 24fps.

Is 4GB ram the max this will take?

There are a few other i5 laptops around this price here and you can get a Toshiba with i5 430M with a HD 5470 graphics card for £464.99 at PC World but this is a refurbished model which some don't want.

seems to be expired now
