What's special about "endurance" paint? Why is it so expensive?

I've tried "once" and did not feel much difference to the "regular" paint. (10 ltr Crown = 12.99)

doh !!
bought two tins of dulux for £20.00 less than a week ago, also 2 for £20.00 on the crown which i also bought..
will get some more now though

I have used Once paint a number of times and apart from on one occassion, painting white over cadbury style purple, it has done exactly what is says on the tin! Being super cheeky when faced with streaky purple in my newly whitened room I called Dulux as instructed on the tin and shortly after received a cheque for £19 as it had taken more than one coat.
Have yet to try endurance paint, it claims to be 10x more durable than normal paint and can be scrubbed clean, its for my hallway which will serve 4 young children so will certainly be put to the test, if it's not your cup of tea you can get any other type of 5l paint on the offer.
Ta da - i'm off to paint....

Was this instore? Could do with durable paint for my hall too! In fact every room in my house with 3 kids! Bargain!

Original Poster

It was instore but some colours are also available online, also should add that if you reserve and collect via Quidco you get £2 too.
I am really hoping the paint lives up to its own hype as the hallway is prime target for sticky fingers and muddy paws (and that's just my husband!)

As per posts above - it is supposed to be tougher. My mum had her hallway done in it and she reckons it does what it says on the tin and it is easier to clean if you get marks on it. I recently did my kitchen wall and hallway in it and it is easier to get rid of any marks.

I'm considering getting Endurance anyway for another room now - just cos it is as cheap as normal paint. The mixing scheme paints are included in the deal (checked yesterday).

However, you need to spend £50+ to get 15% off.

does anybody know if you can use the 10% card on top of the 15% deal.thanks.

I have to ask , can you prove the purchase of endurance with receipt as i bought a 5l tin this week at £29.98 and after just calling my store they have told me the offer is not on any endurance paints at all.

If you post the receipt here it my be of help to myself and others who will have problems buying endurance this weekend under the offer.

What colours are online? I need white.

i have been told that white is included but only the standard size pots. But i bought a 10l dulux white this week for £15 which was on offer. They also had 10l Crown for £10.

No - the 10% card becomes 15% this weekend (but you still have to spend over £50 to get it).

In my store there are no signs at all that Dulux is on the 2 for £20 on 2.5L and 2 for £30 on 5L. I took a mixing scheme can of Endurance and a can of bathroom paint to the self scan and asked the woman to scan them... they went through on the offer.

If you have a B&Q handy simply take the can back. Get a refund and buy 2 more cans. You don't need to convince anyoone as the tills will do the deduction.

White is not included. You could go for something like Timeless which is pretty much a white.

How do you get a Privilge Card?

Endurance paint will have a thicker and tougher film along with better surface slip so it's easy to clean and will take a bit more of a beating, just remember though no paint is chip proof.

Spend more than £50 by close of stores on Monday 19/10/09. It will then give you a discount until the end of the month i believe.

We were in last night and debating whether to take 7.5 litres or 10 litres of matt emulsion from their mixing desk. Decided on 2 of the 5 litre cans, no signs advertising the offer but when we were getting it the guy says " you do realise you'll get the 2 of these for about £30".
Result !
Actually better than a BOGOF as we also got 15% off as we had other stuff to take it over the £50 minimum spend.

is the offer spend £50 and 15% off everything you buy after that, or can i buy £51 worth of paint and get 15% off £51 worth of paint lol?

Is as you say; if you pick up £51 worth of paint you will get 15% off this.

Not wishing to sound like a paint anorak...... but on a related issue;

Have been told that apparently various retailers are having problems getting stock as a number of manufacturers have been running into financial difficulties. We had looked at a few options in Homebase and were quoted 3 week delivery which we thought was a bit strange and too long to wait, so we looked at other options in B&Q, but found certain ranges either had low or no stock levels on the shelf and no definite delivery date. Was here we were told about the problems.

Glad my better half decided on the Dulux mix highlighted earlier as saved us a fair bit in the end. Suppose safe with a company size of Dulux. Some of these "designer" paints are lovely , but no use if you can't buy the volume you need to start with or even worse not being able to get that extra tin required to finish the job off if not bought enough.

2 for £30 for dulux mixing machines???

Now that is a bargain!!
They charge £27 for 5l for mixing, so £15 each is a steal.
Dulux trade centres charge £32 for 5l (although it is trade quality paint, so even thicker)

bought 4 tins paint for £40 (2 for £20 deal) plus 15 litres of Crown white matt for £10. Total cost was £50

so got 15% off = 42.50

without discounts/deals would have cost £74 give or take a few pence.

Saved approx £31

Me mucho happy.

On a seperate note: I want to put an acrylic varnish on the top (will be putting a universal/Melamine primer on some furniture then putting some matt emulsion on), anyone any suggestions for a cheap acrylic varnish/lacquer? Scewfix has a spray but I'm scared it will drip. Any advice much appreciated.

Many thanks to the original poster - you have saved my friend and I a small fortune. This has got to be the cheapest Dulux paint in the country this weekend. If you spend over £50 this endurance paint works out at £12.75p for 5L. A truly amazing bargain for some decent paint and served by two of the most helpful B&Q assistants I have had the pleasure of meeting. Thanks OP

take it this is in store? cant find it online

I got handed a privelege card when I bought all the paint but no idea what the criteria was, maybe spending over £50?
Don't know what it is and how long it lasts so will have to do some reading!

Buy mixing can do you mean the cans unmarked which they use to make up the coloured paints as in base? if so what's the white endurance called as im sure its not labelled up in my store as endurance, and this is definably in the 2 for £30 ?

Im going tomorrow and will re buy all my items again then pop them back to the refunds on my old receipt to save lugging them back as some of my stuff is bags of bonding.

You were given the Privilige card for spending over £50. The card now entitles you to 15% off anything and any amount until close of trade Monday 19th and then 10% off until the end of October. I believe the paint deals are running until the 22nd and the 5l Endurane and mixer paints work out cheaper than BOGOF.

Yes - I mean the unmarked cans. The offer is on coloured paints and Dulux will not offer white in the mixing schemes as it can be bought in the standard range and would be a waste of time mixing as you can't add any colour to a base to make white. I would imagine that a can of the light base would be white though (hazarding a guess there but it seems logical that it is).

Is dulux endurance paint any good in a kitchen?

Thanks OP

Is dulux endurance paint any good in a kitchen?

I can't see it being much different. I used Kitchen in the areas that get slashed a bit and Endurance on the other walls. The kitchen paint went on really well though with a good matt finish so I would have been happy using kitchen all round.

please help, i am so lost. what exactly is this offer. it does not seem to be online and i am going to paint the proposed nursery for our first child (due 18th dec)

i was going to paint it today but i really dont know what offer i am supposed to be looking for as it is not online and from word of mouth it does not seem to be advertised in store either unless you know what you are looking for and get it scanned.

so basically, what am i going in to look for????? is it endurance..... or is it dulux once........its all very confusing:oops:

please help

Whatever Dulux paint you like. Just buy 2 of the same size pot (either 2.5l or 5l) and make sure it is not white. If it's for a nursery I would get Endurance. But get whatever you fancy.

superb deal - thanks ever so much to OP. The large B&Q in Farnborough had a big sign up as you went in (by the foul smelling bark that they had put down to "plant" the fake xmas trees in) and another sign by the paint itself.
I got 4 x 5l cans of Endurance Matt Natural Calico....theres none left now
Marked as £30.95 x 4 - £123.80, I paid £51!!!

Not read anything other than OP's post but would like to say that you have made a HUGE mistake buying Dulux ONCE paint. There is NO such thing as one coat paint! You WILL regret it!

p.s. Don't be fooled into buying £50 of paint just to qualify for a gimmick sales offer. Buy one item @£50+ and then go and return it immediatly.

I went to the local B&Q today and made enquiry as to the colour of the light base endurance used in the mixing and was told it wasnt white it was colourless!!!:w00t: which i dont really believe as i have seen them mixing it before! anyway the woman on the mixing counter told me that the endurance was not in the offer at all ...then told me it was going through the tills but shouldn't be !

They then ran out of light base so i asked her if she would kindly get the next closest store to reserve a pot for me tomorrow and jobs worth she was eventually i talked her round and im off to get my paint tomorrow.

But hasten to add the adds all around outside the store for the paint offer state ALL Dulux and crown paint 2 for £20 and 2 for £30 no where is there an * or footnote to say its not on white or on endurance. so my argument is ALL means ALL. I will take my chances tomorrow after a nights rest .

Thanks to the OP, I got 4 tins of the 5L Endurance for £51.
There were signs for the 2 for £20 & £30 on the shelf for the normal Dulux emulsions, but no signs anywhere near the Endurance tins. The sign does say ALL Dulux emulsions, the only exception is the Paintpod pods which are 2 for £40.
I scanned the tin twice through the self service and it took the price down to £30 for 2 of the 5L. Got an extra 15% off at the tills as well, so well worth this afternoons trip to B&Q.

I'm not sure why you are painting melamine with matt emulsion at all - an eggshell oil-based paint on top of the primer would be better and needs no varnish topcoat. But, if you go your route and want to finish with acrylic varnish (lacquer), you can get it from Wickes, Toolstation or Screwfix in the usual 750ml or 1L cans (or larger) in satin or gloss - all are similar. The Screwfix 10708 satin at £7.89 for 1L is pretty good value. Just make sure that the surface is free of dust etc before you varnish and rub down gently as necessary with very fine abrasive paper (or steel wool) between coats. (You could spray but I agree that runs are a problem without reasonable spray equipment - an aerosol is going to give problems on large panels apart from being uneconomical.)

Hope this helps - good luck!

You won't need to argue as Endurance is on the offer. Bought some today. However, I am sure people have said that the white isn't. You may need to argue on that point.

visited the local b&Q and a very very nice lady helped me enormously and after mixing all my paints she refunded all my last transactions from 2 days before the promotion even though i only had the receipt with me and then re sold me them and my paints with discount i actually came out with being £8.00 in credit and i had 5 extra tins of Dulux endurance on top! i went for the white cotton in the end as after much faffing it seemed the closest to brilliant white but done on the mixing machine to get the deal.

cheers.
