Awful version of a wonderful book

I've always been a fan of both, maybe that's because I had already watched the film 10+ times before reading the novel

the film doesnt make sence.its like they never read the book.but the parts in the film that stayed true to the book are good.but its a bit of a mess.baron harkonen is sick.

Not a patch on the book to be honest, and a bit of a mess , but still one of my favourite films, its just one of those films that you enjoy despite the flaws.

Patrick Stewart before Star Trek and music by Toto and Brian Eno, whats not to like

The film has a very interesting history and most of it ended up on the cutting room floor allegedly. I think it is watchable and the soundtrack is excellent. The book is a masterpiece considering when it was written.

Loved all the books the film does the best it can. Now it would be a two parter or trilogy if they remade it

Just read the book and got this to watch from the lynch blu ray box set. Wasn't too impressed with the book . Tbh didn't think it was a patch on some more modern sci fi i.e. hyperion or Anders game.

Have you seen the TV series from about 2000? Its 5 hrs! I enjoyed it as well as the film (still haven't read the books yet!).
Also children of dune was made into a TV series following dunes success.

Yeah, that would have helped. I'd read the first four before the film came out. Had great hopes, it didn't reach anywhere near my expectations.

The books slowly got worse. First, great 2nd not as good (they never are) 3rd so-so, the fourth and I gave up reading the rest. First is a classic = and I can't see where "modern" sci-fi is in the same universe (so to speak) Gibson and the rest were 10 a penny in the golden age of Asimov/Silverberg/Heinlein/Poul Anderson years of 40's to 70's. (Avatar is pinched from Poul Anderson's works lock stock and barrel. Campbell should be ashamed as he rolls around in mountains of dollars - "Call me Joe" being one of the books Avatar was based on - guy in a wheelchair becomes alien - recognize ?)

I really like this film, but prefer the extended cut.

I loved the first book, didn't mind the first sequel, then hated Children of Dune, although God Emperor was pretty cool, the rest not so much. Haven't touched the additional books by Herbert's son.

It was by no means a bad book but Ive just read the foundation trilogy and in terms of scope it doesn't co me close. I would say hyperion is one of the top sci fi book ever, regardless of whether it is relatively new. As for heinlein, cant stand his writing style, the moon is a harsh mistress is just awful.

Despite Lynch botching up this adaptation (2hr 17m...really...), it's still an enjoyable watch.
Like any book to film conversion, the book is far better.

I was holding out hope regarding talks about a reboot with Luc Besson

I loved this as a kid, and have various versions of this on different formats.

If you can find it you can get a "Tv Cut" thats 180mins long, the main difference being a long introduction.

Its just a shame we will never see the true original version of the film with David Lynch basically disowning the whole thing.

I never knew there were any other versions, I will look out for this now as I loved this when I was younger. I too watched the film first and that's probably why I can love both the film and book.

Thanks for posting, had a 10% Zavvi discount code e-mailed to me so £6.26, ordered and heat added!

The other main difference is they turned the film into an awful mess... That is, of course, if you didn't already think it was

Is that an alternative ending?

The 6 film collection for £15-ish was a better option for me.

The TV series was a dud. It looked utterly threadbare in parts with a forgettable cast. Also, they recast the Fremen as ill tempered caucasians (probably inevitable given it was an American production), while much of the attraction and originality of the book was on its exotic, Middle Eastern inflected spin on sci fi which was previously mostly monochrome.

I think you are being unfair. For such a lengthy and complex book with a whole bunch of alien concepts that needed to be explained to the viewer, I think he made a pretty good fist of the storytelling. The special effects supervisor should have been beaten to death with his own liver though considering there is virtually no evidence whatsoever of the then gigantic $40 million budget on the screen.

In Lynchs defence, it was the studio who contractual demanded the 2hr17m, but then he should have seen this would be a problem. I believe the first rough cut was 4.5 hours long.
It's a massively epic story that requires at least 3+ hours. There's a whole chunk in the desert thats cut out and just rushes through like a montage.
Don't know why they didnt keep the rough cuts for an extended edition.
Agreed, considering the budget, the special effects could have been a lot better. Eg the lasers were comical, star wars were much better 7 years prior.
