Christopher Nolan writes and directs this war drama that tells the story of the Dunkirk evacuation during the Second World War. In May 1940, in the early days of the Second World War, hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers are trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk after being pushed back by the German army during the Battle of France, prompting a massive rescue operation to evacuate them. As the evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, gets underway, the soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force holds a shrinking position as the Nazi's advance upon them. Meanwhile, civilian sailors back home are called upon to use whatever vessels they have to aid the rescue effort across the Channel and the Royal Air Force tries to defend the vulnerable troops on the ground from the skies. The ensemble cast includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Harry Styles.

Not a good film imo, I watched this for free and that didn’t make it any more enjoyable. Not the best war film you’ll see.

Thank you for your unsolicted opinion. Allow me to offer balance; I thought it was excellent. Amazing use of sound to support the narrative.

Having been mortared and rocketed in real life, it is just as terrifying as some of the scenes in Dunkirk.

People don't understand just how much the Royal Air Force saved our country at Dunkirk and in the ensuing BoB. The UK stood alone in defiance of fascism, not a single credible ally or military victory to it's name and a group of pilots numbering less than the amount you have facebook friends shielded us until we could recover and strike back.

Dunkirk is an excellent representation of the dark hour before it all.

Agree. Interstellar is one of my favourite movies of all time so I was really looking forward to this, but I found it very underwhelming. A good movie, but that's all. The hype it got was completely OTT

Yes but this code can be used on anything not just this Blu Ray, so should be in the voucher codes section.

That's probably because it's not really a typical war movie. It's a movie set during the war but without any direct fighting between sides, and about the retreat to a beach which left thousands of soldiers stranded hopelessly awaiting someone to save them while the opposing army advanced upon them. It is a wonderful example of creating and displaying tension in a movie with some superb performances.

Not seen Dunkirk, but looking forward to it. Can recommend another recent WWII film release - Land of Mine. Another film full of beach scenes and gripping tension.

He's only stating an opinion.
I've seen it and although billed as the greatest war film ever..............I disagree.
However I did enjoy the film.
I like the point you make about the UK standing alone in defiance............however it was the UK that travelled the World invading other countries, killing, raping and pillaging long before Germany invaded Poland.

Staying with the theme of WWII, Son of Saul is a very good film.

Which isnt what the film is about is it? Just because as a country we did some bad things doesn't in any way remove significance of what happened in WW2.
Amazing film, haters don't know anything about film making or reality of war.

...wow.

1. The site is not Hot UK Opinions. What is it about media deals that turns everyone into a professional critic? No one asked for his opinion.

2. In your mind, how have you linked the transgressions of the British Empire with stopping the spread of Nazism? Are you 12?

I imagine many people went into this expecting lots of fighting, which is why they possibly felt somewhat underwhelmed. To me it was a great depiction of one of the historical events in WWII and a brilliant representation of the theatre of war. It captured the hopelessness, the desperation, the fatigue, the disillusionment, the chaotic nature of war and many other factors from the soldier's perspective. I was lucky enough to see it at an IMAX cinema as that's what it was really designed for and the experience blew me away if I'm honest. The soundtrack was perfect in driving a constant feeling of dread and uncertainty throughout the film and I came away with a more enlightened perspective of a soldier's experience in WWII than I have with many other war-based films, except perhaps Letters from Iwo Jima.

Was mind blowing in IMAX, I took my 9 year old son, his mind was blown.

Perfect timing as we were on holiday in Normandy afterwards so it really fired up his interest in WWII before I took him to all the landing beaches etc.

Dunkirk is a phenomenal piece of cinema on a number of levels.

My thoughts exactly as a Chris Nolan “cinematic masterclass” it was very underwhelming much like Interstellar was over hyped and the story became rather facetious.

I am completely in tune with the history of World War II, and the significance of Dunkirk as a moral victory in many respects. But I’m talking about it as a film experience, in which I found it very dull and largely boring.
I have reviewed over a thousand movies on IMDb.
Some people may like it, while others may love it. Just giving my opinion on wether it’s worth the price on offer.

How about you read up on history......I'll think you'll find that virtually every country on this planet has blood on its hands at some point....

Lining up other historical misdeeds is insulting to the memories of those that gave their lives for the RIGHT reason in WWII ie to stop mass extermination of the Jews

Don't mix up agendas.

The most overrated film in the last decade.

Nolan's basically made a Sunday afternoon TV movie but because it's Nolan it's been raved about. Very mediocre.

However! It's a good price for the 4K bluray, so my opinion on the film isn't important. Heat added.
Price now £24.99, expired.

If you'd ignored his comment, it wouldn't have started off on a big debate on the thread.

Not a touch on saving private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, letters from Iwo Jima, The Thin Red Line & Hacksaw Ridge.

I can watch movies without much dialogue and be able to enjoy it i.e Drive.

This was utter tosh!

Maybe have a look at your own posts offering "unsolicited opinions" before you start having a go. You've posted loads of them recently (Starbucks, Fifty Shades of Grey, etc...). Might wanna wind that hypocritical neck in mate.
