any thoughts on an area to stay?

Going next Oct, and have refundable apartment booked in Machico.

Chose it for the hikes and the sandy beach (although, we plan to drive to seixal too). Not interested in eating/drinking out due to strict diets - we are use to self-catering.

I'm in Machico at the moment, what a beautiful island, Machico is right by the airport, in fact, our air BnB is opposite the runway, but still ok, a bit far from many places, need a car, walked/hiked to Sao Lourenço from main car park, only do it if you are reasonably fit, amazing scenery, but thought my heart was going to give in, heavy going, but worth it. Most eating places a steak is about 12 euros, but great servings, average between 10 to 15 euros for a main meal, weather has been great, 23 Deg and 18 at night. (edited)

Down by the beach, been swimming in the sea, about 22 in the water, Prainha is a lovely place to relax

Went there in September. We stayed in the Funchal old town, near the Barreirinha Bar Café. Ate there most days. Funchal is a big town and the hub of the island. You can go some great walks in the mountains and trips go from Funchal daily. We went self catering but there are some cheap places to eat. Oct - May is the Cruise window so there will be laods of ships in the harbour. Great place for a 7 day break.

How strict is RyanAir's bag policy? I have a 32L NorthFace bag, would they let that pass as a "small bag"?
