WINNER OF THE FINANCIAL TIMES/MCKINSEY BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2018

The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of Theranos, the multibillion-dollar biotech startup, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end, despite pressure from its charismatic CEO and threats by her lawyers.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup "unicorn" promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood testing significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: The technology didn't work.

In Bad Blood, John Carreyrou tells the riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a tale of ambition and hubris set amid the bold promises of Silicon Valley.

Interesting read
great book, really great.
Very well-written book and a very interesting story!
Absolutely amazing how, a) they got away with it for so long and b) the investors mentioned in the book.

I haven't read this book yet, but I have been listening to a podcast on this subject. I'm guessing she is a very good salesperson, very convincing. That combined with the fact that she is an attractive, well educated white person from a very good family (at one time in the past her father's family was one of the richest in USA). Plus people sometimes act like lemmings.
The podcast is called The Dropout - well worth a listen, as others have said it's an interesting story.

Yeah the podcast is amazing. Several times while I was listening to it I had to stop what I was doing and search for her on Youtube to see what she was like. The real voice vs the fake voice video really made me laugh.
If you want to hear about another Scam artist look out for the The Missing Cryptoqueen on BBC sounds.
I was impressed how easy to read this book was as it would be easy to get too bogged down in dull detail but it moves along at a good pace while giving a lot of information from the start to finish of Theranos. The latter part of the book deals with how the author wrote the article in the WSJ which would start the collapse of Theranos and the constant legal threats the author had to endure as well as his sources.

The only bad part is it can be hard to read how much Elizabeth Holmes got away with and still getting away with at the moment until her court case. Since I first read the book I developed a thyroid problem and now appreciate how important it is to get this test accurate as I've been very overactive and then very underactive, this was one of the tests Theranos were particularly bad at.
