Is it a completely free Windows 7 Upgrade or is it necessary to pay Shipping Costs? This can be as much as £30 depending where it's coming from (Dell charge £15)

Original Poster

Not sure, there is a link to click, and say's charges may apply, depending on acer

Are these difficult to upgrade EG graphics / memory because of the small size ?

£12.78 to upgrade to W7

ebiz3.mentormediacorp.com/upg…spx

The first person to say that you can build it cheaper yourself is officially the world's biggest p***k. :whistling:

you could definitely build this for cheaper yourself...

Really interested in this.
Do you think it would be a hassle to upgrade the ram?
I have no experience with ebuyer and acer, have they got good customer services and reliability?
Can anyone help me out with this?
Cheers

Not for 3D
It's a budget version of an old range, usually integrated into motherboards.

It appears to be a low-profile/half height microATX case so the motherboard will be a standard mATX board and the memory should be no more difficult than any other computer. For cards like graphics cards you will need half-height/low profile versions. Unless you only want to add a basic graphics card for more monitors or HD Video decoding your choices for graphics card will be very limited, and because of the smaller space for a fan, quite possibly noisier.

does it last longer?

comet.co.uk/sho…3GB £279 3gb ram and windows 7 and nvidia enen tho it says something else look instore and for 319 you can get triple core with 1t hdd

Acer's reputation for reliability and support is suspect (Which? magazine).

Also, later versions with better specs and Win7 pre installed are out there for not a lot more. Unless you must have rock bottom price I'd say this is a lukewarm deal at best.

lol - but you'd get a much better gfx card than this one with hdmi for £30 ;-)

:X

Do you have a link to this Ebuyer deal please? Could be perfect for my parents!

Link?

I found one for £250 that matches the spec, but doesn't have Windows 7

The £220 one didn't have Windows 7 csi, it didn't have any OS!

The Dell one for £177 recently did, but has expired now. Think it's still cheap tho but not as cheap.

oh yeah, good point. Lucky I got the full premium win7 for £42

still, you can get it for about £80 so makes my pc £50 more than this one but has 430GB extra HDD and 2gb ram

so yes, this is a good deal.

shouldnt this be expired as the upgrade is not free? (£12.78)

Hi i think the ebuyer pc that csi man is on about actuallly expired but has since been replaced by this one (im not 100% sure on that though!)

ebuyer.com/pro…488

im undecided about going for the above or this one:

crystech.co.uk/Mer…SYS

im not sure about the above company but they were recommended to me on another forum.

i had it narrowed down to the above two, but now the one in this post has appeared?! can anybody in the know advise on which is best please?

thanks

fine for playing HD movies perfect for under the tv

Has this got built in wireless?
If not, what would be the cheapest way of making it so.

Thanks

Would make a good living room pc, and plenty of upgrade options....power supply would be the weak link.

where are all the computer experts when you need them! lol

i have now been advised of this :

aria.co.uk/Sys…469

quad core for £300 but is it any good??

im seriously tempted by the spec, can somebody confirm its a good buy before i go for it?

thanks

thanks mate appreciate the advice...

so the one from scan just comes as a bundle of parts, and you have to put it all together yourself?!....how hard is that? isnt it just a case of connecting things to the motherboard....and then using an OS (i have win XP) to install the relevant drivers for each device like the DVD/RW and the HDD??.....or is it a little more complex?

it is a good machine, with fast RAM and a huge well branded HDD but i have to put it together myself....

this is a tougher decison than i had imagined! but for an extra £60 i get double the speed processor and save myself the hassle of putting it together....

decisions......!

All this talk of building your own base unit or barebones deals from scan etc. are missing the point of this offer - this is a neat and stylish small form factor pc - not some large boxy base unit with no OS, different markets altogether.

Well said, i poseted this thinking it was good. But if you find better why not post a thread and share to let people decide.

Thanks mambo, does that scan one have HDMI? Tempted if so...

Ah nice one, thanks mambo!

Just wondering what do you think of this one too? ebuyer.com/pro…487

Often mentioned on HUKD but the specific link to customer research is here:

theregister.co.uk/200…ey/

That one mostly covered laptops but the relevant finding is on Acer's customer satisfaction. Most relevant quote:

"Apple creamed the opposition for customer satisfaction with 93 per cent. Sony scored 77 per cent, Toshiba 76 per cent and Dell 72 per cent. HP got 70 per cent and Acer 68 per cent.
"Top of the reliability list is Sony and Toshiba with 93 per cent of Which? members surveyed saying their laptop had not needed repair. Fujitsu-Siemens got 91 per cent and Apple and Dell scored 87 per cent. Next were Acer and HP with 84 per cent, according to Which? members surveyed. The average score was 87 per cent.
"For desktop reliability Apple, Compaq and Dell all came top, followed by Acer, eMachines and Medion, then HP. Below average were Packard-Bell, Evesham and Mesh."

Added to everything else I hear it's made me wary of buying Acer, even though they often seem to offer good value.

Can't comment on DIY machines though!

The Celeron is pretty old now

...what?

The Celeron E3200 was only released in September so it's one of the newest processors available. It's a 45nm wolfdale core, which is the latest Core 2 Duo design (originally released some time around the start of 2008). It's not quite a new as Intel's Nehalems or AMD's Athlon/Phenom IIs but it's certainly one of the newest processors mentioned so far in this thread and a lot newer than the 5050e in the deal, which came out a year ago and is based on a 2007 core.

Having said all that, plus or minus a year on a processors age doesn't indicate much.

Ahh, nice one thanks mambo and Endless! The celeron sounds okay then really, for my parents... but no PCI means no HDMI which means it's out for my parents

Does the HDMI port on this Acer have audio please?

Original Poster

It should do yes, your best getting an hdmi 1.3 lead, and set audio on the computer to hdmi.

why are you so concerned about hdmi. Are you considering this as a media server in a front room? They tend to be on the noisy side so not suitable unless you change the fans.

Ah thanks ^

And I just want HDMI to be able to plug it into the TV either in the dining room or living room really, to watch the footy etc when it isn't on Sky or ESPN
