Bought it, sent it back. The “smart home hub feature” is not a substitute for the actual Hue hub. False advertising really.

Really? I was told it is. Can you explain this in more detail as this is one of the reasons for me thinking about upgrading

+1

With the echo plus you can not update the firmware on the bulbs. You can only do that with the hue bridge.
It is similar to adding Osram or Ikea bulbs to the hue bridge, you can't update the firmware on them with out the OEM bridge.

I was about to purchase this but am I now correct in assuming it’s pointless paying extra for the echo plus as I will still require a hub? Surely Amazon would have figured this out. Can’t see the point of echo plus!

I don't own this but the below is from the review above

"But at the same time, the Plus’ capabilities with those gadgets are limited. For example, many Philips Hue lights support a full color spectrum and can be adjusted with the Hue app. But the Plus can only adjust their brightness and turn them on or off. To be able to change their color, you need the Hue Bridge, which defeats the purpose of connecting them through the Plus to begin with."

That may not be a deal breaker for some but I suspect there may be other things it can't do either (as well as the firmware update)

Thanks for the info, I was considering buying the new one but will stick to my first gen with Philips hub.

I do wonder if a workaround will come out for this at some point. I was reading on the Samsung SmartThings forum that users have been able to connect Hue bulbs directly to the ST kit, but not straight out of the box - something needs to be tinkered with. If the ST community have found a work around I do wonder if Amazon will catch up.

Thanks for the information everyone. I hope this is something they'll update, if possible, in the future. Glad I read this... It does change things. I hope Amazon give a statement on this so we know if they'll add this feature.
