Tesco Direct must be gearing up for a new Baby Event, because I've just noticed they have a small section called Baby Event pre-launch deals with up to 1/3 off on selected baby and toddler items HERE

Part of the offer includes this extremely well reviewed Safety 1st Secure Tech Pressure Fit Safety Stair Gate that was £20 & is now £15. We've used these in the past (still have one across the kids playhouse door to stop the dogs rampaging in) & they are really excellent quality, very secure & easy to use.

Suitable for both doorways and staircases, the Safety 1st SecurTech Simply Close Metal Gate combines simplicity and durability in a strong U-shaped pressure fit gate. Fitting openings from 73 to 80cm, a 4-point pressure system means that there is no need for anything to be drilled into the wall. Easy to install, this steel gate’s newly designed handle can be opened with one hand and a colour indicator clearly shows when the gate is open or closed.

The Safety 1st SecurTech Simply Close Metal Gate can be extended up to 136cm with additional extensions (sold separately).

This safety gate comes with a toolkit and easy to follow manual.

This totally!

I recommend you get one with permanent fixings on the wall that swings open fully (or not).

Can you recommend a good one at a sensible price please? Its going at the top of the stairs so in this case its really importnat not to be able to trip over the bar going across the bottom ! (its not really been an issue for other door ways but I can see it being a big hazard for the top of the stairs!)

My wife is a childminder, and we have 3 of these:

BabyDan No Trip Screw Mounted Safety Gate, White amazon.co.uk/dp/…HW4

Bonus is they can be easily removed at weekends, so it doesn't feel like I'm walking through a submarine, closing gates behind me.

Thank you, I like the look of that one and the price looks good too
I would suggest measuring the width of your stairway before you purchase. There is a fairly small range on these. You can buy an extension for about 8 quid on Amazon but can't make it smaller than the minimum of course.
