saw the same deal at Galashiels 4G phone for £49 - no brained imo

no brainer even

Not bad good for the price

I hear these phones are ok. Are they not Huawei under the branding?

Is it likely to be locked?

Good price and may be a better deal the the £40 Motorola Moto E on Vodafone. I'm not sure, but if you want 4G then it seems cracking. You could use it instead of a mi-fi device for similar money.

made my huawei, branded as an EE specific device. Therefore likely to come locked.

With a mifi, you'd need a separate device and data plan adding significant monthly cost

Hot, but Leytonstone does not have an Asda.

I think you meant Leyton ;-)

Voted cold.

You will need a hum v and kevlar vest to go to that store!!

just kidding

It will be locked to EE but you can get a code for £3 on ebay

I've had one of these and I thought it was a cracking phone for the £99 I paid at the time
If you are using a Galaxy 3 or similar tech then for £49 this represents an absolute bargain of an upgrade

Just took one from Bradford Store. Superb phone for £49, a lot better then Motorola Moto E and very close to Moto G. I have both Moto. Will work with EE, T-mobile, Virgin, Orange otherwise cheap unlock from Ebay.

Not really, just a data only sim.....for £20 every 6 months T Mobile will give you 500Mb a month or 12Gb over a year with EE for around £70

The other use was suggesting tethering the EE phone to use as a mifi device

I'm using this phone as a replacement until my contract runs out. It's actually not that bad at all. I paid £90 for it and thought it was a pretty good deal at the time even at that price. Bought it mainly for 4g tethering.

Only downsides are slightly odd looking icons rather than the standard android ones, and the screen resolution is just a bit too low. Camera is quite nice for the price.

Bargain at £50.

Huawei Y550 similar spec phone from EE £34.99 +£20 top up....got one and it was not locked to EE...using 4G without extra cost using 3 unlimited data sim £15 per month..

Heat. Makes a lot more sense than a Firephone at half the price

Good back-up 4G phone.

Just stick a different launcher on it ;-)

Bought one
Don't need it but I'll try to persuade the wife to use it or I may use it instead of the BB that my work laughingly provides as a communication tool

Just reserved one, I assume cheap to unlock?

Android 4.3 and no chance of updates or third party roms...

Otherwise it ticks all the boxes the moto-e misses. It has a compass, an ok camera and a front camera. I'm tempted.

£1.19 to unlock on Ebay

and you will have hours of fun with it talking to EE

There is already a lollipop custom rom for it

Looks good , ive had an ee kestrel for a few months ,runs smooth , screen is nice despite low res really colourful, only downsides is average build and the phone always ends up caching too much especially using chrome(that is down to android 4.3) got it unlocked for 99p ebay no probs. Really want to give this rom a try to install lollipop.

Damn, paid £65 for a used one earlier this month.

It's an absolute steal at this price, I'd say a much better deal than the other big phone deal of the day in all honesty!

I do have a few complaints: the build quality (it 'feels' very cheap IMO- but then at £50 it genuinely is, so it's not a fair complaint really- but something to be aware of if you're bothered about that sort of thing) but also performance- it does slow down from time to time if there's a lot going on. The ports are also in annoying places (I use a dock to charge and it has to go in upside down, plus the headphone juts out the side) and I'm not a fan of the custom UI (but a new launcher can sort that out).

But generally it's fine, data speeds are awesome, it has a great screen, nice size, decent battery life. Cheap to unlock as mentioned. A steal at £50.

I have this phone and it's better then my Samsung s4 mini. Bargain price. Heat added

Does the phone need to be rooted for this?. Has anyone tried this rom

don't install this rom, it's fake. no kitkat, no lollipop.

I'm sorry but I'm 80% sure that is just a spam page that claims every mobile phone has lollipop in order to get you to click on their adverts. Some mobiles just don't get rom development or official updates. Its not the end of the world but it worth considering.

Be 100% sure, that site is a pile of ****

I've just gone up to get the moto e deal posted on here and ended up buying this instead. It looks nicer. Is it the better of the 2? Thanks for posting x

The Kestrel is better in everything apart from the OS version. It has a faster chipset, better camera, 4G and a front facing camera.

Thx for word of warning , I did hear that EE have made it nigh on impossible to root but it might be possible. Will wait and see on other options, shame no official update but at the price i paid no biggie really

Haven't found any around Birmingham. Anyone seen one close by?

Actually it looks like people have rooted it successfully.

just there are no roms to change to so all you can do is tweak the phone and add apps that require root access. It probably uses some strange bit that drivers are not available for so people can't make their own roms. Still its cheap and has 8gb of memory.

Another ASDA bargain. No wonder Tesco have lost so much market share

Have one of these myself. The only real niggle is that the white notification area often conflicts with apps, meaning that you can't see playback controls and things sometimes.

Aside from that, it has a decent enough camera for the price, the speaker is clear and loud enough, it's snappy, the screen is quite vibrant, battery life is decent. The UI is pretty awful but a launcher can fix that. It has a decent Do Not Disturb mode built in and has an SD slot. It's definitely better than the Moto E for the money. For £49 it's a far safer buy than a Fire Phone at twice the price. The only real benefit to the Fire Phone would be a better camera. Specs are irrelevant really since that will never get updated and nor will this, and they both (probably) run well enough as they are.

One think I like about Jelly Bean is that you can install Adobe Flash Player from Adobe archive site then google for soccer 4us apk and watch live football stream. I couldn't do this with Moto G. Also EE Kestrel has stock internet browser with txt flow support which is very handy to read articles and forums, works great, the same like on HTC phones. I don't care about Android updates, just need a fast phone with good battery life and cheap till my contract (9 months) is due to upgrade. After getting new phone I can still use this one as mifi device with 4G speed when needed.
