Does anybody know if this particular device can be unlocked?

Original Poster

Yeah, got it last week on a 30day contract, and unlocked it for 99p off ebay within minutes - now using it on three

Is it better than the Alcatel Y800?

If I unlock it can I use an unlimited data plan somewhere?

Original Poster

ebay.co.uk/itm…944 - thats who I used to unlock it, no problems

@sstuff I believe the unit is a Alcatel Y855

@fbs_4800 yeah it can be unlocked no problem, its just finding somewhere with unlimited data. Tmobile 6 month data sims are still on ebay which have a fair use policy, depending on what you want to do with it

Thanks for the reply buddy. I wanted to use it for my home broadband if possible. just moved into a flat and don't really want a phone line until they install fibre. is it stable enough for that? xbox gaming and the like? worried it would lag

Currently using the EE sim that come in it, and getting a ping of about 50ms - 20mb download and about 8mb upload, its better than my adsl connection, but really depends on how much data you will use, its more than fast enough.

Good find. Hot.

How much data used in streaming tv for 3-4 hours (sd bbc) ?

Can't find it on the website, am I being stupid or is it OOS?

Go Tablets > Mobile broadband. Will be in there

I wouldn't recommend using streaming sites. Used YouTube and for 20 minutes roughly at 720p for 10 minutes and 480p for the rest, 200mb used or something like that

Seems like an alright deal until you reach the part where it's unlimited browsing and 1GB downloads per month. How do they define downloads vs browsing? What does streaming video count as?

A 4G dongle for 30 quid?
Seems like a damn good deal to me.

Downloads. I can't remember where I read it, but most major providers apparently count youtube etc as downloads.

Use Three. I sometimes use 25 gb a month and they don't complain.

HOTTTT. Ordered. I was looking for one of these for months, Vodafone was trying to sell me one £G MiFi for 30 last week so this one is hot in my op.

My osprey broke after 3 months it's replacement broke a month after that these things are unreliable.

They also have Osprey Mifi with 6GB for extra £10 (Product code 19255948). useful for some requiring more data.

Can I ask what size sim it takes please?

Suggest you look on the Carphone Warehouse website for item 19255829
preferably getting there via your favourite cashback website - you never know your luck!

Googling "Osprey SIM Size" reveals the EE help page that says:
"Now insert the supplied full size SIM into the right hand slot of the device and replace the cover."

Those 6GB allegedly last for 90 days too (eg per Amazon listing - CW seem to be silent on the matter).

Just found the 6gb version by searching using the item number.

The last time I tried to use my Three phones sim card in a MiFi, it detected it and stopped me. Will this work or are they all the same?

Yes they are, it won't work.

Will this work with 3 all you can eat prepaid? Or will they block or cap it?

What deal is this?

Best I can see on Mobile Broadband is 10GB for £15, which I wouldn't say is better value than the 15GB/£20 I get from EE as I can get 80Mbps 4G on them.

Just to mention the 30-day contract deal:
hotukdeals.com/dea…457
Direct link: carphonewarehouse.com/bro…on4.
So £20 per month, 15 GB 4G per month, and you can cancel immediately, giving you the Osprey and 1 month of 15 GB 4G for £20.
As mentioned in the main post, you have to have a credit check, and they set up a direct debit. But if you're OK with this, then this might be a better deal.

Could I put my mobile phone sim in this? It's t mobile, but has unlimited Internet. Thanks.

I don't know specifically. It probably depends on whether your contract allows tethering or not. And whether they can detect this or not.
Quite often, they're happy to give unlimited internet if you've got it in your phone; but they don't want you to use your internet by sharing it between many devices by tethering.
Conversely, if you have an internet limit, then they are sometimes OK with you tethering, because your limit is a limit regardless of whether it's a single device using it or multiple devices using it.
However, you would probably have to check if your contract allows tethering.

Good find op, heated!

Just collected my Osprey Black On EE 4G 15GB £20, 30 day. going to cancel and unlock. Crazy thing is I went through TCB and tracked at £26.25. Wait and see if it pays because I cancel?

Even if it tracked, they may decide if you cancel the rolling 30 day contract within a minimum period to cancel your cashback, chances are it might take 3 months before it goes from tracked to payable on that basis.

I just got the contract one from my local EE shop. £10 for the unit the £20 per month rolling for 15gb which I thought fairly good
