EHIC - European Health Insurance Card (F R E E)

40
Found 13th Mar 2013
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaced the old E111 in 2006.
Your EHIC lets you get state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return. It also covers you for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions and for routine maternity care, as long as you're not going abroad to give birth.
The EHIC is valid in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries, including Switzerland. For more information about what is covered in each country see our country-by-country guide.
You can apply for a free EHIC online.

The EHIC is entirely free of charge. However, other unofficial websites may charge you if you apply through them.
If you're having difficulties with the online application form, you want to update your personal details or replace a lost or stolen card, call the automated EHIC application service on 0300 3301350.
If you have any questions about the European Health Insurance Card then the section below may provide the answers. However, if you still have further questions then you should contact the Overseas Healthcare Team on 0191 218 1999. If calling from abroad ring 00 44 191 218 1999.

Just remember this is no substitute for travel insurance.

why is this on here??

Because it's free and we like free stuff..

It is also a reminder to check the valid date on it. A lot of people forget they need to be renewed.

Handy thing to have but pointless if the ambulance takes you to a private hospital

Useful reminder - so many (scam) websites try to charge for EHIC

We can equally use the Euro health services like the European use the NHS when they need.

Half decent ID card too

Thanks mine had expired and i had not noticed now updated

Thanks

Why are you on here? It would be a much more pleasant place without the idiots constantly going on mini-power trips demanding everyone else conform to their definition of a "deal" or "freebie". If the users of HUKD don't feel it's a deal/freebie it will be voted cold and shortly disappear - if it truly shouldn't be here then be patient, it won't be here long...

Everyone should do this and bring it with you no matter where you go (also store the number in your phone or email it to yourself in case it goes missing).

My friend was in Asia and broke her arm and the doctors there set it wrong. On her way home she missed her connection flight in Rome and was in a great amount of pain and ended up seeing a doctor there. You never know what will happen.

Also, last time my friend needed a doctor in Spain, she said her travel insurance company actually made her wait for them to apply for an EHIC for her.

Heat added, not that I'm planning to get into Europe immediately, but I might take a trip some time soon.

Heat added! Already have for me and my wife but this time I ve applied for my new born boy

It says main applicant must be 16 or over. How have you done this for a baby? Was going to for our little girl so interested to know. Thanks.

Agreed - I think some people are desperate to get some heat badges me thinks.
Stuff like this annoys me, it doesn't belong on this site and its certainly not a deal. Some will disagree, but i'd rather see deals that are actually good rather than posts for Grooveshark or things that have always been free or things in poundland/world etc.

Hasn't this always been free? Don't think it should even be on here really!

It is a deal for most people, because most people would prefer to save their money and get free or cheaper health cover abroad instead of wasting thousands on private care. It is pretty obvious that you would much rather waste your money, which is pretty stupid in this day and age!

Not really, i applied for one of these last year - so it means i must be clued up enough to already know about these. But there again, there was lots of information given out about these when they were first released and advice from the government. So basically, what this thread is saying the governments advice is a hot deal.

Yes it is! There are people who do not know about this card so I think that the person who listed it on HUKD has done a good job! I've had the card for years now - it is a good thing to have, just in case!

Thanks. Just registered for it. Not sure if i'll ever need it but it's free! X)

Fully agree as I have heard on forums like MSE that alarmingly there has been refusal of EHIC in favour of private medical insurance ( travel insurance ) recently.

Right, cause you are not Europeand, and there are no brits abroad using other coutries' health systems.

This site needs a sticky section for permanent freebies like this.

Some Spanish state hospitals are being very naughty at the minute. Some are using a company called Gestitura, a private billing company. They are asking anyone that goes to one of the state hospitals that they work for if they have travel insurance before the EHIC so they can invoice the insurance company rather than claim any costs incurred back from them.

There is a battle going on in the EU courts about what they are doing and Gestitursa are taking insurance companies to court over unsettled invoices for medical expenses.

Shut up

A number of insurance companies will waive the excess if you have an EHIC card so yet another reason for having one.

Hehehe, good one, thought you were being serious there for a minute!
My partners sister had an accident in her apartment in Bulgaria - injuring her back, the ambulance people wouldn't even take her to the hospital until she had shown them proof of her travel insurance. They actually sat in the ambulance and waited for her to go back in and upstairs to her apartment to fetch it.

good post

Yeah it's always been free but the EHIC is absolutely essential when travelling abroad in the EU and not everybody has one, many people don't realise they need one.

Good post! Thanks. Mine had expired and I needed to register our little girl. Very happy.

cheers op just renewed mine adding the 8 kidletts to it

This BBC article today goes to emphasise just how important the EHIC is, it has stats about how many people travel without them too. Most people don't have one shockingly! bbc.co.uk/new…386
