Okay, so we've seen a lot of these deals recently, but this is the one that has persuaded me to part with the dosh. This is pretty similar to the Xiaomi Yi but seems to have better 1080p picture quality. I've been looking at a lot of comparison videos and I prefer the videos of this camera over the Yi. It's also got a 2" display. Although it does 4k video it only does this at 10fps so it's probably not worth using that feature to compare it against the Yi. That said, I'm no expert so don't take my word for it, compare them yourself and see what you think.

I wouldn't touch Gearbest. Ordered a tablet from them which doesn't connect to WIFI. Their after service is terrible. Sent several emails to arrange a refund with zero communication. NEVER AGAIN

Yup, it's a gimmick, but 1080p is very decent.

Shame it sounds like there's no video play back via the display screen. Would be something I'd consider down the line.

Took the plunge! Looks decent for less than £40. Can't seem to see what mega pixel it is for photos tho?

Probably only 4 or 5mp, but the video quality looks pretty good for the money. This is the video that convinced me:

EDIT: seems to be 12mp according to some eBay listings. The specs also state that it takes 12mp pictures so...

Xiaomi Yi - does not have screen (yes I see that you can buy something like ad-on).
Yi 2k video at 30fps vs 4k at 10 fps (which one is more useful?)
In my opinion in that price range Yi is the best.

From what I can gather, the Yi is slightly better when it comes to image stabilisation but the h9 is sharper and has much better audio quality.

This is actually a pretty good review. Quite long but worth listening to. There's a few good examples of the camera in use at the end of the video.

Audio never bothered me tbh (my yi is or in waterproof housing or strapped to quadcopter).
There was issue with lens not being set properly on some yi`s (quite large number) but there was/is diy fix to rectify it (my one never had any issue).

To be fair, I think they're both excellent value for £40. Not a great deal in it either way. I just happen to prefer the h9, but I can see why someone else would prefer the Yi.

Another side by side test. This time with the SJ4000. Water looks a lot clearer with the h9.

I have a SJ4000 (WiFi) and the video on it looks much better than in that clip. There may be something wrong with the one they have or was set to a lower res.

Also have a SJ8000 (no idea if its a fake) that does 4k at 24FPS and 2K at 30FPS. That was around £70 though. Brilliant quality.

I think the video for both cameras is going to look a lot better at home.

The problem with Gearbest is they pay for reviews, thus the buyer has no real idea of the quailty of items because the system is tarnished. Many people will grab the review cash with no thought for integrity. Buyers rely on honesty on reviews, without it we are open to buying tat.

Granted they dont have the best of rep, but other than a couple of delayed deliveries, never had a problem personally. I would never rely solely on a retailers own reviews before deciding to purchase. There are plenty of independent review sites out there for products that Gearbest sell.

I said nothing of retailers own reviews. The reviews I'm talking about are not self-reviews, they are from paying customers who get PAID to give reviews. You said the thier rep aint great, well, it would be a damned site worse without paying for good reviews. Check Trust pilot. Its heaving with happy-clappers giving their order number to get thier credit reward.

I'm talking about reviews left by buyers on their retailers website. I tend to ignore them. As mentioned, there are plenty of independent product reviews out there. Do a bit of research on the product and buy from a retailer you're comfortable with. Gearbest don't make all the products they sell and promote.

I never was soley talking about their own website, where did I say that? I'm talking about Gearbest reviews in general, over all sites, including independant ones (like you mentioned), Trust pilot as an example. Heres the fact: anywhere you find a Gearbest positive review with the order number posted along side, it will mean Gearbest will be paying them $5. You dont have to tell me to do reseach either. Check the Gearbest site and see they pay for reviews anywhere they are posted.

From Gearbest site:

"FREE Gift Cards

Corrupting the review system.

Good price, but if you are looking for a 4K action camera I would recommend checking out the Hawkeye Firefly 6s which goes up to 24 fps at 4K but is twice the price, 10 FPS is a little pointless IMO

EDIT: Just spotted this review which highlights although the Hawkeye is good, it is not fully 4k

Good price
I'll be going for the pricier new sjcam though
SJCAM SJ5000X Elite. £90

12mp Sony IMX078 sensor
built-in Gyro Anti-Shake stabilization sensor
Adjustable Viewing Angle Lens

Multiple video recording formats:
4K @ 24FPS (3840*2160), 2K (2560 x 1440) @ 30FPS
1080P (1920 x 1080) @ 60FPS
1080P (1920 x 1080) @ 30FPS
720P (1280 x 720) @ 120FPS, WVGA @ 240fps (Slo-Mo)

Edit

That Hawkeye seems a fake/ cheaper version using same novatec chip and lens. Not sure which is better though

Think this would be any good as a cheapo camera for motorbike/helmet mounting? Not interested in 4k, 720p would be fine

It does 1080p at 60fps really well and goes up to 120fps for 720fps. It also comes with a load of accessories including a helmet mount so I think it will more than fit for your purposes.

Interesting, I hadn't seen the SJCAM version, I would assume that would be the more "official" version like you say but the Hawkeye has been well established as well now and is a good quality camera

I have been using a SJcam4000 as a motorcycle helmet cam for a year or so now.

Its take good clear video, the waterproof case works well, but the product quality is alittle questionable.

The battery lasts 30-40mins max, it also drains the battey flat if the battery is left in the camera even when switched off, meaning date and time are all lost also.

The lense, over time has become scuffed, as it protudes out from the lense outer plastic ring, its not been dropped, but down to pure wear and tear over time,so on playback i have a haze spot, not good if neded for evidence.

For £50 it was good value, but i really need to buy a new one now after less than 15 months usage and only 3 days a week.

My friend has a gopro he paid £200 for it, 3 years ago , it works and is in great condition after the years of usage as when new.

I have now decided to buy a gorpo, in the hope it will last many years over the cheaper chinese/japanese imported cams.

I guess time will tell if its works out better to spend more, and have quality and lastabilty, and ultimately saving money.

All very true and great advice. If you're going to use one of these things on a regular basis then the issue of build quality and longevity is a lot more poignant. If you're like me, however, and you just want to take it snorkeling on your next holiday then it more than ticks the boxes. I'm only buying it because I don't want one of those crappy underwater throwaway cameras and I can't justify buying a GoPro for that kind of usage. It all comes down to what you want to do with it.

I have to be honest, looking at the side-by-side video my opinion is that the sj4000 video looks better and sharper albeit, quite a bit darker than the h9.

would there be customs charges and tax as this is being sent over from the states??

It'll actually from their Chinese warehouse, but if you select the free shipping option it's unlikely that you'll get charged import fees. Can't promise you won't get charged but there's a good chance you won't be. If you select the speedier post then you're more likely to get charged as the package will be handled by couriers rather than China Post.

Any change this will arrive by Christmas? Also does it take full size SDxc cards?

What about this one?

Seems to be faster at 4K, but not much info on the web. Specs seem OK.

To answer my own question, it seems that both the OP's cam, and the one mentioned in my post above only use a sensor capable of 2688×1520, so the "4K" isn't real. It looks like the processor in the one in my post is a little higher spec than the OP though so in principle it should be the better option.
