well mine works fine. i love it.

How does it calculate all those things from your weight?

Original Poster

you put your age, height, sex, and calorie intake which is 1-5 1 being a couch potato and 5 being very active.

So it guesses? What if I ate pies for 10 years and now eat celery? Its just a gimmick isn't it.

Original Poster

dont think it guesse it, it analises your body to get the bone and muscle mass

Analises how, exactly?

It shoots a mild alternating electric current up one leg and down the other (hence the metal plates you stand on). You can't feel it at all. It measures how well your body conducts at various frequencies and works out how much fat/water/muscle/bone you contain from that. The theory is different tissues dominate the conductivity at a given frequency.
All nice in theory. These scales also have a bar graph showing how you stand on each test (high/medium/low) for your age/sex/height. Mine are screwed up on muscle mass, telling me 60 something is high. In the booklet it says that is low. Going back tomorrow!

Edit: I'll check that the booklet isn't referring to percentage and the scale to kg or something. Finding out what constitutes healthy muscle mass and what it actually means is less than obvious (even when you google it).

Nope. My scale definitely not reading right. 61% muscle on the scale reads as "High" whereas in the instructions it's "Low".

I'd go with the scale reading here (could be a simple mis-print- you know what instructions are like :-D; say one thing, mean another)... no way can 61% muscle mass be described as "low" - thats like :w00t: In fact, best thing to go with is the mirror :-D

how does this know if i'm all muscles or all fat? :whistling: seems a joke to me, weight is all the same...ripoff!

Try reading a couple of my posts here, I've tried to explain the method used and also posted link to wikipedia. As I've said, it's not just weighing you. Bear in mind the system isn't anything like as accurate as a clinical test.

The box photo shows it reading 67% muscle mass as "Medium" too so I still think something is up. Maybe a firmware error. Doing a reset changes nothing.
I'd take those figures with a pinch of salt anyway, as BodZog says that's an awful lot of muscle.

if they can afford to sell it for £9.99 you can imagine the production cost for it and the technology used...still a ripoff to me, better off using a mirror and a normal scale

The most accurate means of determining your body composition (fat, water, muscle, bone density) is to get an autopsy done :w00t::-D

A cheaper option is to just put a sticker across the display which reads:

YOU ARE NOT FAT

Happy days..

My brother has a set which work on the same principle. However, his have handles which you hold aswell. I believe they were quite accurate and tallied with other independant readings his trainer took.

Can't really comment on how accurate these are, but provided they are consistant, I guess thats what matters. As the change in the readings is probably as usefull as the absolute readings. Unless you're doing some sort of professional training :whistling:

The other good thing about his ones are that they store all the readings (for upto four people), so you have an instant report of your progress every time you weigh yourself.

Amazon are selling one "with handles" at the moment amazon.co.uk/Omr…1-1 for £23.75, or alternatively, you could go for this amazon.co.uk/Tan…8-3 for a mere £168.23 :w00t: - "Only 2 left in stock--order soon." :-D

I didn't find this particular model. Ended up with one which is £12.99 and glass which measures all the same thing but the display cycles through the various things rather than displaying them all at once like the one pictured - would prefer the pictured one. They tell me what I already know, i.e. I'm fat, lol.

LOL, that second one is the one he has. Although he's had it a few years, so it might not be the exact same model. Pretty sure he paid less then £100 for it.
