Here’s quite a thorough balanced review unlike the IGN one.

In my opinion is it was great - it suffers from probably the worst opening ten hours of a game since Dragons Dogma (also another amazing game when you get over the hump) but once you’ve established yourself and figured out sometimes it’s better to walk away from certain fights the game becomes very rewarding.

Yes the graphics are sub par for 2017, the animations are ten years old if I am being kind, the combat is stiff, exploitable and often unbalanced, characters are bland, the voice acting is comedically bad at times but the game is way more than a sum of its parts - I’ve competed this and put around 50 hours in, 40 of which were very enjoyable while 10 were probably my most frustrating gaming of the last few years.

If Piranha Bytes do one thing well though - it’s world building and the world in this game is a joy to explore, big, often beautiful and full of character.

My advice would be to watch some videos and see if it’s one for you.

I’ve voted hot on this deal for the Piranha Bytes collector, I’m not one of those and would not recommend spending £50 on this unless you are.

I think you can pick the base game up for under £20 now though and in my opinion it’s more than worth that.

Disclaimer - I played on the PC (albeit with a controller) so have no idea how well it runs on consoles.
As long as you're fine with combat where you need to think about what you're doing (parry, block, counter etc.), rather than charging in, mashing attack and relying on DPS to get you through the fight, then it's worth checking out.

Coming from the Souls games I found the combat extremely easy to exploit - most melee fights you could just kite until they swung then go in get a few hits and back to kiting. The big enemies were a case of picking a side to dodge around, waiting for the wind up and dodging behind them, couple of hits then rinse repeat. Which to be honest I was fine with.

It was the ranged enemies that seemed to do a tonne more damage to you than any of the ranged weapons did to them, even if you were using the same weapon. Found that a bit strange but overall I really liked this game and look forward to the sequel if it does come...

58 Metacritic.

Reviewers rate many games negatively but sometimes players love them since its a personal experience. 'Defiance' got slated in many reviews but proved to be 1 of my all time favourites!

Exactly the reason why Metacritic is the go to as its a "personal experience" as you put it. I'd rather get an average score from across the board as opposed to one person's view. With your logic someone looking to buy Extinction shouldn't look at the overall 50 Metacritic and instead look at the random Internet person that claims its one of their "all time favourites!".
