What's the deal?

"This game is a work in progress. It may or may not change over time and may not release as a final product. Please purchase only if you are comfortable with the current state of the unfinished game."

That is from the link. It's a risk, you could get a great game or a non released game. Should be released as a alpha/beta. Asking people to pay for this state of a game is not on. Im not voting either way as it could turn out to be game of the century or a failure.

It's cheaper than the PC version, which is unusual.
Also if people are reminiscing about the original but don't have gaming PC. They can now play Elite for under £300.
Which is about the cost of a GPU alone to do this game justice.

It was a Kickstarter and the developer behind it knows what he is doing.
This game will evolve, if it flops that will be probably due to platform limitations.

Hardly a big risk with this title. Buy now and you'll pay less than the final release price.

I'm currently playing it on the xbox one. It's the full game. Plus content coming to the X1 before the pc. The game looks, runs and plays great. A steal at £25.

even better for £14 from Xbox Hungary

You have contradicted yourself there. If you need a £300 gpu to do this justice, then an Xboxone will not be anywhere near doing this justice. Doubtful it will even be more than 720/900p at 30fps (edit - trying to find what it runs as on xb1 but no luck, anyone know?) .

You'd beat that with a £100 GPU, or did I miss what you were meaning to say?

I have a PS4 and was probably going to get an XB1 eventually, but the Game Preview Program and backwards compatibility features seal the deal for me. MS have really turned themselves around since launch, but I wonder if it's too little too late to catch up to Sony.
I think they still need more compelling new IP, especially since Sony ran away with E3.

I contradicted myself but you also missed something.
To get the best from this, yes you need a powerful PC. A cheaper GPU would make it playable, however what else would someone with a non-gaming PC require? new PSU, more memory etc.
So a £300 console including game maybe the best compromise. The game will at least be optimised for its platform, well you'd hope so

My main point was that you suggested a top end PC to do this justice, or an xboxone. If you need a top end PC you are not doing it justice playing on xbox. Compromising yes, you are doing that. Definitely not doing it justice though if a high end gpu is the measure.

Also don't add additional costs to PC to support that point, you can do that with xbox as well such as live subscription.

Sorry I'm just nitpicking now

I miss the days of squinting my eyes to bypass LensLock on the original. Whilst any development is always a risk, it's minimised by having an industry veteran like David Braben at the helm, where every early purchase will increase the likelihood of a completed game. Voted hot on sheer nostalgia alone. I'm off to take a look closer look at the current state of the game where you're lucky these days to get change from £40-£45 new for any big title.

Have you never heard of the massive success that is Steam Early Access? People want to play the game early, and want to see it evolve over its time in development.

This is exactly what they were asking for, and I commend Microsoft for actually thinking outside their walled garden for once.

I thought this was an XBone/Windows 10 PC "crossbuy" title?

Anyone know any different?

I went the xbox hungary router and was charged £14.30 for the game. There was also talk about getting the windows 10 version included in the price but not sure how, it was on the earlier thread.

Xbox one may not be a powerhouse but the game will get to be fully optimised for the platform so that 1.3 teraflop gpu will punch well above its weight. Not forgetting the superb xbox one controller. It will likely run at 900p though, upscaled to1080p as that seems the sweet spot for xbox one hardware to enable it to also have the full range of graphic features/effects and decent textures.

MichyM

Should be released as a alpha/beta.

That's what this is.

No one is forcing you to pay for anything. They can ask for anything they want, as long as they're being honest about what you'll get, which they are. It's your choice whether to buy it or not. And, if you did pay, you're not just getting the game in its current state - you'll get it through to completion as well.

Yes, some games released in beta or Early Access are a mess and never improve, but this isn't some two-bit operation where some indie developer is going to disappear with your money. I don't know what the current state of the Xbox One version is compared to the PC version, but the PC version was totally playable even in early testing stages and has improved massively since then, with excellent support and major updates being released even after its 'proper' release. I wouldn't say there was any risk with this game - you can already see how it plays and its quality standard from the PC game - and the developer is not going to disappear without finishing the Xbox One version.

I think I paid 40 for the PC beta. Various reviews have said how well it plays on the xbone, and lots seem to play very well using an Xbox controller. For 25 quid it's a bargain. If you played the original then you'll like this, though there are lots who were expecting hugely led storylines ( which isn't what ED is about. You're certainly not spoon fed. The other bonus is that those on consoles can play with friends on the PC version

On the PC you don't need a 300 quid GPU at all. It plays really well on an Radeon 7850. You only need to blow 300 or 400 if you're running a DK2 and want to super sample.

I'd rather pay £25 due to price drop after its been out for 3 or 4 months and knowing what type of game it is then risking paying a pre-pre-order price now!

Is it the same game from Hungary for £14 ? What's the risk

Is this based on the BBC Micro version?

Will it be all in Hungarian lol

Just gonna throw the warning out there again.

General advice is not to buy early access games because you think they'll be great when finished, only get it if you want to play it now.

As for big industry veterans being a sure bet. Populous by Peter Molyneux, and Broken Age by Double Fine where backers got half a game.

Early access is a ridiculous concept, video games are the highest risk entertainment product, this is just a way to put the risk on over enthusiastic consumers rather than investors.

No risk, done it many times. Cheaper games, fill yer boots

I played this back in the day on the beeb.

I did the 14 deal on the other thread, despite my reservations, and bought pre order elite on Hungary xbox site. Worth 14 or 24. A great game. Basically the original game but with massively upgraded graphics and gameplay. Docking is still a bugre though...

mrnumpty

Is this based on the BBC Micro version?

Based isn't the word but yes that is its heritage and many of the ship designs are the same. It plays in a similar way but much enhanced options and features. If you loved the original Elite then this is the latest version of the game. In between there has been Frontier Elite 2 and First Encounters plus a huge number of Elite inspired games.

If you loved the original Elite its hard to imagine you won't like this but it doesn't hold your hand at the beginning. What is great is the game is evolving all the time, they are adding more and more stuff that makes it a growing gaming experience.

Do they send you a physical hard copy of the game ? If they do this is a cracking deal for £14 !! If they do does that include postage ?

Is the cheat still on where you hyperspace as docking and end up in the new planet

Thanks - will they send actual hard copy and is it in English ?

If they do I loved the original and the graphics were awful so this will be incredible

Not sure if you're trolling tbh.. Ran away with E3 because they announced everyone else's games? Hype wise, yes, as a console owner, not a chance.
I think it may be because you already have a PS4 but I think people would be mad to not get an xbox instead to play Tomb Raider, Forza, Halo, Gears etc before Christmas.

In English. No physical copy of the game.

Change your Xbone location to budapest. restart. this will mean when it logs back on you auto go to the Xbox site in Hungary. buy the game, for about 69,000 flt - about £14). you need to put in a fake hungarian postal address for billing (hungarian postcodes are 1234 in format). it will start downloading. set your location back to London. log off. log back one. the download will continue. then you'll be off shooting baddies in an asteroid field before you can say 'captain jameson'. easy. and we'll worth it.

no hyperspace docking Easter egg - docking is even harder now you have to go through the slot and then navigate around inside the station and physically land on a designated pad. no thargoids either But a great but very challenging game already.

If you are even just tempted, ignore the nay sayers and just shell out for this. 14 or 24. either way its a with buy

I hated the elite dangerous trial but have fallen in love with The Long Dark, happily spent the £15 asked to buy the "full" version. Never thought I'd bother with early access but that game has just grabbed me, can't wait for further additions to it!

Whenever I hear people complain about some modern copy protection, I always think just be glad you didn't have to use the lenslock...
Oh, and elite 2 copy protection on the Amiga hated you and your family too

For anyone not sure try the free 1 hour trial, however, you likely wont get through the tutorial in the allocated time. I spent some time watching this on Twitch before deciding to purchase but it is a beautiful game and I was happy to purchase as it is now

unfinished or not, it looks crap lol
