My first post so please help with kind or helpful words if I've got it wrong!
Noticed that Asda Direct are selling these brilliant little gadets for half price from £100 down to £50. I got one a few months ago and it's totally reliable - does work better on the fixed aerial but great little thing for the kitchen, bedroom even the bathroom. This is the 3rd one I've bought - just wanted to share the find with someone.
Absolute bargain!

Looks like a fun gadget for the kitchen.

Some reviews.

]Amazon Review (But in white not like the Asda one so may be different?)

£73-75 on Bigpockets, SVP etc so good price.

Heat and rep added.

Not sure if this is identical but it's only £45.94 at SCAN (If you have free postage)

Just in case it helps - the white product on Amazon (and maybe Scan) has a 720 x 480 Pixel Resolution, but this model only has 480 x 234 Pixel Resolution. Doesn't mean it's not a good buy, but it's something worth considering...

Good spot, so the Scan one, which is the same as the Amazon one, might be the safer option.

Still a good post as it brought it to our attention!

Thanks everyone for taking the trouble to respond with helpful comments - just to say that the picture is excellent in this set. It's 'instant on' when switched on and fully functioning freeview. Like I said, I've just purchased my 3rd one!

Only prob is that it's White and not a Black monitor as sold at ASDA Direct

Good post - never thought of freeview on same box - I'd prefer to get a higher resolution one if poss

Borders used to sell these in store, don't know if online, but they do sell a number of Elonex items.

It is tempting

Cold from me, that pixel resolution is awful, picture viewers with such a low screen resolution are a total waste of time and money, photos look washed out on that screen size, terrible.

Not much of a deal I'm afraid; Borders have been selling these for £55 since they came out. We have one in the kitchen and the picture is OK, but you wouldn't want to watch it for long. Sound/video synch is also poor and the picture is off-centre. Overall, its OK for background use, but I wouldn't by another one if it broke.

Good price - dire res. Although with such a low res - the video you could store to show at its native res would only take up a fraction (perhaps as low as 10%) of standard TV format.

I would guess it would also run quite if you made up a box of ten or 12 rechargeable AA (etc) batteries.

i bought a similar elonex one about 6 months back very pleased with it... picture resolution seems to be poorer on this one... was tempted to buy but will not because of this

mine has a resolution of "720 x 480 Pixel Resolution"

A digital photo frame that has Freeview TV? What will they think of next!

Do you need to connect this to some kind of aerial for trh freeview ?

I can't see it working otherwise.

what ever next?

The Scan deal that theboxdeluxe mentioned earlier in this thread looks excellent except the postage is £9.43. Any idea how to get free/reduced postage on Scan items?

To answer my own question it would seem that members of AVForum get free postage on orders over £20. See: avforums.com/for…php. Membership of AVForums is free.

hexus have the same thing also, i forgot to say

Hey guys ... thought I'd let you know, I ordered 2 of these from ASDA Direct yesterday, were delivered this morning (great service there!)

Haven't had chance to test them properly, but the good news is the ones that were sent are the white (which I definitely prefer to the black), higher-res frames (720x480).

Only disappointment thus far is the lack of AV-in, which I thought it had from the description, but chances are if I'm watching this it's only gonna be for short-bursts while in the bathroom, or the kitchen so DVB will have to do.

Thanks to the OP for flagging the deal.

Thanks everyone
This was the first 'deal' I have posted and it was a bit scary, but most people have been great - even those who found better options!
Can't wait to find something else to post

Hi Everyone - apologies Asda's specification was wrong. My new sets were delivered yesterday and the resolution is 720 x 480 !
Hope you think it's not such a bad deal after all
Thanks

Hi Admin - Can you please relist with the following information for people.
Follwoing a few comments about the poor resolution I'd really like to advise people that the specification supplied from the Asda website is incorrect. It states that the resolution is 480 x 234 but in fact the resolution on 4 sets that have been delivered is a much better 720 x 480. This may help some potential buyers to see the value of the deal.

Can anyone tell me the model number of this item LNX-PFD7501 or 8501?

**Don't forget Quidco**

Hi
I'm aware of four of these sets that have been sent out and all have the model number LNX/PFD8501

OK - I realise I'm a couple of weeks behind the curve on this thread but I have just bought one of these Elonex frames from ASDA at the price of £50. As it is a Christmas present I can't open it up but have noticed the following on the specifications on the outside of the box :-

The model number is different being PFD9501 (as opposed to PFD8501). I can find plenty of reviews on the web for the 8501 model but none at all for the 9501 so maybe this is a recent upgrade.

The box quotes listening to "over 20 Digital Radio stations" which I assume is those stations available via Freeview and not DAB.

The resolution is 720x480 pixel which should be good for viewing what is effectively a 6"x4" photo at 120dpi. A lot of people print excellent photos at that size using that dpi. (DSLRs produce this aspect of 3:2 but most compacts produce an aspect of 4:3 so photos from them might not fill the width of the screen or be a bit stretched.)

Plays MPEG-1/2/4 videos which should cover the output of cameras which can take movie sequences (but probably not HD). Built-in speakers. Not sure if it will cover DIVX though which is a variation on MPEG4 - be interesting to find out after Christmas. Has anyone tried DIVX (or XVID)?

So, looking at the spec. it is promising. I just hope it lives up to that promise.

Any reports from anyone else with one of this spec. as to how the photos/videos look?

Can I ask if it is white or black? On Amazon it shows a white one but the ASDA site shows a black one.

Thanks

I have gently prised open the box lid (as it is intended to be a Chrissie present) and I can see that the front panel/bezel is black but the back and the stand are white. The illustrations on the outside of the box are the same, black on the front, white on the back and stand.

I think black surrounds on LCD TVs look better than silver ones as they lead your eye straight to the picture - hopefully the photo frame will be the same. This is the same as the best viewing option in Photoshop - all the screen black with just the photo in the middle - nothing to distract the eye from the photo.

I'm still curious to know if this is an upgraded model or whether the 9501 on the box is a misprint (why would it be?) and whether anyone has tried the MPEG video options?

Thanks for that mumbojumbo. This has been bought for someone who will use it mainly for showing photos (electronic version of 6x4 prints) and short videos straight from the digital camera. The Freeview bit is a bonus but good to hear that the TV picture resolution is good.

Have you tried viewing MPEG videos?

Many thanks for doing that. Very interesting about the model number. I looked on the Elonex website but its been "Under Construction" since they launched their E Reader thingy.

I did order one to go on a shelf in the kitchen. I'll report back when I get it.

Been into my Local ASDA (Oadby Leics) and there is a promotional stand of these in the elecrical area. Could have saved some postage :x:x Still Topcashback has tracked

sorry - I didn't see it anywhere except online

Arrived today. 9501 model, black bezel, white body. Firmware Sept. ? 2009.
After a very quick play.........
Some problems but basically OK.

1. Difficult to stand up because of position of rf lead. You have to bend the aerial cable 90 degrees as a standard rf aerial plug holds the unit off the stand.
2. If the channel isn't broadcasting at the time of the initial scan for programs it doesn't pick them up, e.g. BBC 3, BBC 4. Have to do a manual scan later tonight.
3. Sound quality poor from the 2 small speakers. What can you expect? Shame there isn't any control over the audio.
4. No Red Button functions as far as I can see.
5. If you unplug from the power it forgets the subtitles setting and defaults to "subtitles on" but everything else seems to be remembered OK

Good things..........

Very good picture.
Handy EPG with preview.
Looks quite sleek, would have prefered a white one though.

Haven't tried the Picture Frame functions but has card and USB inputs.

Good value for £50 especially as its now for sale in store at ASDA so no del. charge.

Can you play a playstation 1/2 through it?

I don't think so, the only inputs are memory card and usb.
