Emergency Phone Charger £1 @ Poundland - Uses 2 x AA Batteries (Also use for Kindle, Nook etc)

I bought one and tried it today, using a couple of the cheap Extra Power Wilkinsons batteries (4 for 50p), not the best, but they worked fine to charge my mobile.

The charger has a USB slot, so you could use it to charge your Kindle, Nook, Tablet etc when out and about or if you should have long power cuts.

A nice size too, about 2cm longer than a AA battery and about half a cm wider than 2 batteries.

Great size to keep in your handbag or coat pocket, just don't forget to keep your USB charger lead with it.

Not going to be the best quality in the world, but hey, it's a quid and if you need something to charge your phone in an emergency and haven't got access to power, you know you can buy a couple of batteries easily enough.

Available online and instore.

It was hanging amongst the Christmas stuff, in plastic on a red card with snow flakes on it, if that makes it easier to spot.

You are welcome. I hope you manage to get one, as I am sure they will sell well.

2 AA batts would only be 3V though, chargers are generally 5 volts...

Search previous thread for xiaomi power bank , depending on exchange rate it is about £8
Delivered. Takes a while to to arrive, try gearbest or banggood.
Has an internal battery which you charge up until the 4 led lights stay on. Has usb port to plug your phone or tablet into. Brushed aluminum case marvelous bit of quality kit.

Poundland one plus cost of batteries is a good cheap option , but for a bit more I recommend
the xaiomi one. Don't buy on ebay as there are alot of fakes out there.

I already have a powerbank, but, if you want to be prepared for a power cut, the poundland one is ideal.

Presumably it contains a boost converter

I can't comment on this specific model but most AA chargers use a voltage transformer circuit of some sort. Similar to a phone charger converting 240v input from a wall into the 5v output but the other way around. I imagine this is the same

I know what it is.

Great for a longer camping trip or if your power bank runs out of power.
Just an extra redundancy in case the worst happens.

I have one of these off ebay, same idea but has a white LED too.

It claims max output is 500ma but my phone pulls 700ma. You're going to get <1000mah@5v out of 2 decent nimh cells, probably much less if you are drawing 700ma.

I got 1100mah total but was only drawing 170ma.

You can get 3xaa or 4xaa versions on ebay too.

For £1.50 you can get the 4aa version from ebay/china, I'd probably go for that if you don't mind waiting as they are rated at 700ma.

Have to pick one of these up my phone loves to die on me at the most inconvenient of times. HOT!!

had one of these from china, its actually rather good, however with 2xaa batteries I think I was able to juice up my phone only to some 40%

Why would anyone want one of these even in an emergency? That's what decent power banks are for!!

I'd agree if it's for a "once in a blue moon" job then why not? However for those who find it a nuisance charging phones on the hoof then a decent quality power bank is the answer. I personally swear by Portapow rechargeable packs - had one of them and a cheaper one and the Portapow was far more reliable (sometimes would charge cheap one overnight, it would show four lights thus fully charged then show nothing after 5 minutes of charging). The cheap one also said it was twice the capacity of the Portapow but lasted half as long!

Yes most/allof the power banks will be made in China, but believe it or not there are quality factories and not such quality factories in China! A bit like anywhere.

I got this deal. The Xiaomi power bank is an incredible deal. The quality of the materials used and the finish could be those of an Apple product. A fantastic power bank for 8 quid. Has both USB and micro USB ports as well.

For the record, Xiaomi's build quality on that power bank is Apple level build quality. Couldn't believe it when I got mine. Definitely going to keep an eye on Xiaomi's entrance to the UK market. We need that sort of competition.

It looks like the 2 battery version of the 4 battery one that I have, which does has a DC to DC converter and therefore gives a nice stable 5V output from 3V or less.

They're dead handy, and a bargain if only a quid, but there's some caveats:

1. In particular, if using rechargeables, note that these devices are not intelligent enough to cut out when the batteries reach 1V and could therefore deep-discharge your rechargeable batteries (which can cause them to fail early or stop them charging again.)

2. Also, they're pretty good at giving a fairly high current output and fast charging your device quick, which is a double edged sword: watch the temperature of the device and the batteries whilst in use and obviously don't leave it in the on state in your bag or pocket or anything.

Agreed. However, a powerbank might already be drained if you're not very well organised. You can always walk into any shop and buy a couple of AA batteries if you find yourself caught out.

I've always got some AA rechargeable batteries charged around the flat somewhere, so I've got a 4 battery version of one of these. Very handy!
