I'm sure everyone knows this but Epiphone is owned by Gibson, their 'budget' range although they are very good guitars. (as an owner of four of them)

Me & my other half went to Dawsons in Leeds recently to buy an electric double bass, we were literally on the verge of handing our cash over, and ended up walking out of the shop due to the incredible rudeness and arrogance of the super-young staff. This is not a shop I would trust at all with any purchases, and I've had similar experiences with the electric guitar staff of the Huddersfield branch.

A whole 99p saving bargain

You should speak to the brass section staff they can blow tunes out of their asses.

This guitar is a pile of poo! Yes, Epiphone is owned by Gibson. BUT, they have good guitars and they have bad guitars. This owes very little to the Gibson Les Paul with the exception of the brand and the basic shape. The construction is entirely different. And if you really do only have £99 to spend on a guitar, you can get better elsewhere. Personally, at £99 I'd recommend a second hand Yamaha Pacifica or Ibanez GRG. If you can stretch to £150 you can start to get a reasonable brand new guitar with warranty that will be good enough that it won't put you off playing like this one might...

woah it is a gibson, but this is rubbish!

Funny, I've used the Huddersfield Dawsons loads of times and the staff have always been first rate. I spent 2 hours there recently choosing a Ukulele and they were really helpful, let me try it with different amps then searched the stock room for ages for one I decided with exact specifications.

As for this guitar, perfect for a beginner. You wont get a better guitar for under £100. Worth noting that you can pick up a good quality second hand LP for £150-£200 if you're a bit more serious.

I stood around with over a thousand pound in my wallet in the Warrington Dawson's a couple of months ago poised to buy a new guitar, amp, a plethora of effects pedals and pedal board for my new band and not once did anyone approach me for help. A well dressed guy came into the shop very clearly after me, I had spent close to 40 mins clearing trying to grab the attention of an attendant who acknowledged me. Once the attendant had finished with the previous customer (who bought nothing and left) he then, instead of coming to me who had been there for 40 mins, approached the older, well dressed guy who was 'thinking about' buying an acoustic.

I just left and went home. I spent over a thousand on my gear at andertons.co.uk instead and couldn't recommend them enough!! Much better service, got phone calls from their team when my stuff was being dispatched. Great guys. Dawson's are understaffed with snobbish people who are more concerned with showing off their mediocre musical abilities.

idk why people buy knock offs of proper guitars. I brought a basic body/neck and customised it. I asked my friend what i needed for the desired finished product, he informed me and from there i did it. People should treat some guitars as PC's and just upgrade. My basic guitar with Seymor Duncans and kill switch and few other niceties, have people surprised when they hear it as they expect a crap sound.

I went to dawsons to buy a epiphone ej200 but they wouldn't price match thomann. They said if I paid full price (299) they'd throw in a gig bag. I walked away and ordered through thomann - arrived in 4 days with a gig bag and a set of spare strings and set up was fine all for £243 quid.

Pretty much answered your question with what you wrote there.

That is a monstrosity

I think the full rrp is only £120, so a bit of a saving but this is a budget guitar despite the brand. To some extent you are paying for the name with guitars. I had a Fender acoustic that was pretty awful.

Yamaha are probably the best brand in that even their base models are decent. I would want to try this out in the shop and compare it to similar priced guitars. Maybe ok for a first guitar, but I think I would look to pay a bit more and find a better guitar that's discounted.

Dawsons bug me too. Biggest music retailer in the UK and nearly all their stuff is rrp.

Looks a bit like the Chibson Less Paul (not a spelling mistake) I got the other week from a car boot for £40 with an amp, I was most chuffed as it was just about as new ....

just like this one .....

Chibsons are apparently very very good copies. About $300 too with hard case.

The pickups are decent on these. The tuners however are not and I guarantee you'd need to change them as it won't stay in tune. However if you've only got 99 quid to spend it's OK. Definitely try before you buy.

Rubbish. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years and I've had cheap nasty guitars and top quality guitars. Cheap tuners make it harder to get a guitar in tune, they don't make it go out of tune. If a guitar won't stay in tune it is virtually never an issue with the tuners.

Yeah. Whatever. Don't comment when you don't know what you're talking about.

I'm a guitar tech, for the record. As you can't write a sentence without being a rude and obnoxious little man my initial comment still stands.
And definitely don't comment unless you know what you're talking about.

You can call yourself what you like but you are still wrong pal.

Outside of the guitar snob wars, if you can stretch to an extra £20-ish you'll get the Rocksmith game to boot. Comes highly recommended as a great learning tool. Unless you're a guitar snob (_;)

That's not true. That's exactly what happens with cheap tuners, out of tune by the end of a song.

Thank you diGriz. You have more patience to deal with the Neanderthal than me that's for sure.

Utter tosh; been playing a bit longer (as if that matters) and while I agree with what you say about cheap being harder to tune, they can also slip and go out of tune.

Each to their own regarding looks, but I have to say that following your link I did a fair bit of research on Shine guitars and can only find positive, if not delighted comments from some very experienced guitar players. Moreover, I was so intrigued that I ordered the guitar you linked, just for further research you understand If it is anywhere close to the quality that owners suggest then it is an absolute steal.

BTW, not to take away from this Epiphone deal, the Shine SIL-510 appears to be far better quality and value, if you like the looks and is £5 cheaper delivered with a free bag if you go through their eBay site:

I hope no one thinks I am hijacking this thread but I just wanted to update and say that I have now received the Shine SIL-510 guitar (linked above) and I have to say that I am stunned at the quality for £99. Granted, they were 'apparently' £349 originally but even so I am very impressed. The guitar is 'new' old stock and was probably made circa. 2004 but was delivered in perfect condition with a free case (cheapo, but all the same). I cannot find anything but praise for this model on the net and I would support that view. This model was deleted from the catalogue a long time ago so when they are gone, they are gone.

Thanks to foxleybob for bringing this bargain to my attention; probably deserves a deal of its own

Cheers
