Application For European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you are a UK resident, you are entitled to medical treatment that becomes necessary, at reduced cost or sometimes free, when temporarily visiting a European Union (EU) country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Only treatment provided under the state scheme is covered. However, to obtain treatment you will need to take a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you. Please note: Not all UK residents are covered in Denmark, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Click on the 'Access to Healthcare Abroad' link below, if you are unsure whether you are covered.

Quite staggering how little these cards are advertised so most people dont take one abroad and get a nasty shock when billed in full for any hospital treatment.

Hot.

You still need full travel insurance. These alone are insufficient.

Spot on....though you may, i stress may, get a reduced travel insurance if you mention you have this already

This just replaces the old E111 form that you had to get from the post office lasts for 3 years nbut very easy to renew just ring the them and they send you out a replacement.

I thought they were advertised quite well...not too sure how i knew about them but i found out about them when i was plannin to travel with some (younger) friends at the age of 17...my parents didnt know about them and I still managed to know. The cards are (longer lasting) replacements for some kind of forms as far as i can remember, but still suprised they havent put some kind of 'administration' charge on them!

Yes - it lasts 5 years.

I agree totally with this. The EHIC does however cover pre existing conditions which sometimes travel insurance may exclude.

Thanks for the reminder, just sent off for mine, always meant to get around to it but never had.

Thanks, never knew about this. Just assumed you got it!

Ordered last Tuesday.......
Arrived yesterday am............

Very handy:thumbsup:

I got mine a couple of years ago. You never know when you will have use for it - although this is no substitute for proper travel insurance.

Get one before you travel ! Good post ! Heat added ....

Site is working again....... just ordered mine

Last year whilst looking after my fathers place in Spain, my daughter got quite ill, and I had to take her to the local hospital. I took my travel insurance paperwork and her EHIC card.
We were there for over 7 hrs, and her treatment was most excellent.
They weren't interested in the insurance paperwork...The doctor only wanted the card.
I am not saying that you shouldn't bother getting travel insurance, I think its VITAL!! as you never know what you are covered for what treatment in what country....but it just shows how important these cards are..

Anyone travelling to the States ...check out their new conditions of entry also.

I already have one from ages ago that is still in date, but if you have to get full travel insurance anyway what is the point in getting one? besides the slim chance of money off your insurance ...?

^ pre existing medical - that usually means suffering the SAME/SIMILAR problem once even if it was 4 years & 364 days ago on you admission - Travel & Health insurance companies WILL not pay up

odd how you got more phone calls when you can order them online. Maybe it was people who had lost existing cards

great its free. thanks. hot

the wife had her purse nicked when we were on holiday and these were in her purse so we had to get replacements and we did it on line and they arrived two days later,
very simple form to fill in,
if you do it through the the post it could take a few weeks.

yep, thats the one. refused as already have one within expiry date so have to ring up.

And if you ordert more than 1, you could invalidate the other......

mine could have been close to expiry date, i know we have had them for a while.

you have to carry these with you at all times more or less
as if you have an accident and are unfortuante enough to got to hospital you have to produce this on admission if you wish to be treated under reciprocal agreements..
if not they will claim of your travel insurance and you will have to claim of te excess
this is from experience... i broke my leg and had both the card and my own travel insurance , as my card was back in my hotel at the time i was admitted the hospital went down the insurance route and i had to pay the £100 excess
maybe just unlucky but stick it in your wallet

Thanx!

Didn't know about it!

Heat & Rep added!
