European PlayStation Store Special Offers until 13 October 2010 - Happy 15th (European) Anniversary, PlayStation [One]!

The first PlayStation console was available in Europe on 29 September 1995. The European PlayStation Store team seem to have let this fact pass them by, but at least ComputerAndVideoGames.com has not forgotten:

FirstPlay Episode 26
Posted on 27 September by Nathan Ditum – Associate Editor, FirstPlay
[ blog.eu.playstation.com/201…26/ ]

"...We’ve got some more Top Gun gear for PlayStation Home – Goose helmet, kids – and another chance to grab our exclusive Joe Danger PSN avatar. We also have two huge reviews, with in-depth HD verdicts on EA’s footballing juggernaut FIFA 11 and Codemasters’ beautiful F1 2010, as well as a look at pec-tastic blockbuster Prince Of Persia on Blu-ray.

And there’s loads more, including a countdown of the top ten PlayStation games of all time, as voted by Official PlayStation Magazine readers to celebrate the magazine’s 50th issue, and a personal take on why MLB The Show is the best sports game on PS3 from the mag’s editor Ben Wilson (apparently not because he’s rubbish at FIFA. I know, I was surprised too).

We’ve also got a review of PixelJunk Racers: 2nd Lap, a look at the latest movies on the PlayStation Store, and screenshot galleries including inFamous 2, Heroes On The Move and Bulletstorm.

That makes over half an hour’s worth of staring at HD games for just 99p, or even less if you buy an £8.99 subscription for 12 weeks."

I grabbed it from the US store last week. Thought it was pretty pants and compared to the current photo album software pretty useless.
I guess if you have a 3D tv it may be useful

What's PlayMemories?

PlayMemories™ is an image viewing application (in optional stereoscopic 3D, if your television supports it).

The application allows you to zoom into 3D environments & change the angle/perspective of panoramic images.

It requires (Official) System Software revision 3.40 or higher, 3D photos [!]; & a 3D-compatible High Definition Television (connected by HDMI cable).

If you do not have 3D capability, then you can still create slideshow presentations of the images on your hard drive(s).

It was available from the US PlayStation Store last Tuesday, & is available directly in Europe today.

The download size for the application is 182 MB.

Such a pity Europe didn't get access to the following items that the US Store has had available for the last two weeks:

PlayStation® 15th Anniversary Avatar
PlayStation® 15th Anniversary PS3™ Theme
PlayStation® 15th Anniversary PSP® Theme (214 KB Required)

I have the PS3 Theme on my PS3 console, & the PSP Theme installed on my PSPgo.

fanpages - how do you go about using US PSN stuff on your PSP?

I tried to upload a demo to my PSP from the US store a while ago, via my PS3, and it wouldn't let me, due to 'non-matching' accounts, or something similar.

You could, of course, have multiple PSP consoles each with their own respective regional PlayStation Network Account details associated, if you can afford to own more than one.

Although I have enough individual consoles to do this, I have never bothered to do so.

I have had the same issue with "non-matching" accounts when trying to use US PSP Demos on my European PlayStation Network account PSP hardware previously, but the 15th Anniversary Theme installed without any such message being displayed.

I don't think I've ever been interested enough to download US (or even European)-provided PSP Themes before either, so I cannot suggest if this has always the case.

However, as the European Store team have not made the same content available, and the US content is "Limited" in availability, I would suggest grabbing the items whilst you can (just in case the European Store never have them available to download).

Also on the US 'Store this week (but not on the European 'Store list):

Swords and Soldiers Demo (Playable Demo) [248 MB]
Swords and Soldiers Theme [3015 KB] (for PS3)

Are you still enjoying "Lara Croft & The Guardian Of Light", 'fc'?

I've still not committed to the full game purchase.

BFN,

fp.

Thanks for that fanpages - I didn't try the PSP theme because of the previous 'account matching' problem, but I will give it a go. I have the 15th anniversary theme on my PS3, which I think is really natty.

I am still really enjoying Lara Croft, thanks. I played the first three levels in single player, which were great. My son then expressed interest in playing, and we have been tackling one level per day in co-op since the weekend. It has been great fun, with lots of exciting gaming moments, and shouts of 'RUN!!!'. It is probably the best PSN game that I have played this year (along with Joe Danger).

I can't edit my above post, but Swords and Soldiers was great fun on the Wii, and is definately worth trying out. Very unique game, with lots of humour.

Is natty good or bad?
I thought the theme was really lame, but perhaps that is just me. My theme at the moment is the dynamic gravity crash which is F.A.B.
When winter comes (soon by the current weather) then I shall change it to Motorstorm Arctic.

Natty is good (see below). I really like the simple black PS1 theme, and the cool little icons.

natty [ˈnætɪ]
adj -tier, -tiest
Informal smart in appearance or dress; spruce; dapper a natty outfit
[perhaps from obsolete netty, from net neat1; compare Old French net trim]

Won't you be getting them all for free anyway?

From what I can gather what you can get is whatever you can rip from your own blurays or what has been ripped from the blurays of others and then made into an obscenely large download. But I could be wrong, maybe they've cracked downloadable games too... but I've also heard a lot of games have trouble even running. It seems in no way as easy an experience as on the other consoles.

I decided to upgrade my firmware instead, no point not being able to go online for the sake of a few quid on rentals and breaking the law.

The Gravity Crash theme is brilliant and it's the only dynamic theme that doesn't ruin the whole effect with a big logo and trademark description.

Was the Gravity Crash one free for a while? I think I missed out there......

May go for Savage Moon from these offers as I quite enjoyed the demo, not sure yet though (have a fortnight to decide I guess)

@ Xenu - yes, we are all very pleased you have broken into your PS3, thanks for keeping us up to date with your affairs. The rest of us will just have to carry on paying a few quid for our games, and enjoying the online play provided free of charge by the PSN........boy, life sure is tough.......

You're spot on there. Playing the demo and there is no need to have X as a button to change directions. The controls would be immediately sorted out with

L2 = drive left (auto turn)
R2 = drive right (auto turn)
X = jump
[] = brake
and everything else left the same, apart from making getting over bumps such a chore. But no, no options to change controls...

Lara Croft is an awesome game especially when playing with a mate, well worth £10.

I've not typed this for a while. Sounds like a reiteration is needed...

Most of the digital delivery games via the PlayStation Store are more expensive than their Universal Media Disc counterparts. This is by design so that high street stores & online retailers still have an incentive to sell the console hardware. If the PlayStation Store prices were undercutting the typical retailers' list prices then they would have no motivation to sell the hardware any longer.

It is the ongoing need for software where the highest profit margins are made in the video game retail industry. The initial price of a console offers very little profit. Repeat custom of software title purchases (with much higher profit margins) is what attracts a retailer to stock a particular console. If a consumer’s software needs were fulfilled completely with digital delivery channels there would never be a need to visit a bricks’n’mortar “high street” store & those retailers would lose a high percentage of their revenue.

I did say, "most", however. Some titles on the PlayStation Store are cheaper than the comparable physical assets.

Digital sales for 2009, according to recent surveys (the results of which were made public just this week) only accounted for between 4 per cent [mcvuk.com/new…ket ] & 6 per cent [mcvuk.com/new…mes ] of total software sales (depending which articles you read, by the same author in the examples I have quoted).

Is that for PS3 or PSP? I get confused. I searched for the PSP version hoping it'd clearly state PSP in the title but it doesn't. I couldn't even find the PS3 version in the AZ!

Looks like PS3 on the store.

Ooo good timing, I just bought knoxx's armoury for borderlands (as well as the bioshock 2 DLC) and now claptrap is out, may give that a lookie too.

I'm having to rely on PSn at the moment, seeing as my Blu Ray drive has failed on me and wont recognise any type of discs. Anyone know a cheap place to a) get it fixed or b) buy a replacement drive from?

Super Street Fighter IV Alternate Costume Pack (was £13.99/EUR17.99 now £7.99/EUR9.99)

I already bought the Street Fighter IV Alternate Costume Pack when it was reduced last time. What's the difference with this new one to the old one?

Is it merely new costumes for the newly added fighters, or do the existing ones get another constume? i.e. is it a full incremental add on over the previous one, or does it duplicate the previous one to a large extent?
