I drove my mother and brother to france (we ended up as far as paris!) this year for mothers day as we had never been. In all fairness, the landscape is pretty but we were all a little disappointed as we were expecting something more - after all it is La France! Having said that we found a neat little place in Calais that does the best kebabs ever haha Anyway, i took us to calais again for my mother's birthday but drove to Belgium instead (we went to Ghent, Bruges and Brussels) toll-free unlike Paris and we were all so pleasantly surprised!! Its not huge towns but its intimate and there is a vibrancy in the air, buzzing eith culture, beautiful architecture and of course Belgium beer, waffles and chocolate! Its also closer to drive to Belgium from Calais than it is to Paris believe it or not. If you do go, check out the south of France as far as natural beauty goes but do make sure to check out Belgium.

I am hoping to drag everyone to the Netherlands next!

Which branch line are you looking at from the Eurotunnel under the English Channel between England and France.
I have a contact in the Fantastic Mr Fox franchise that could possibly dig new destinations, failing that speak to Mr Grayling about HS4

Voted HOT BTW

I've used it twice and havent been delayed
If they applied the same rules as an airline they would be paying out more than they would ever make
Just in time. Thank you. Now only need to book a return TGV ticket from Paris to Bordea

I went years ago and remember ending up at some sort of shopping centre.
Can anyone recommend where to go?
Thinking of taking my son and his american wife on christmas eve, as they're busy every day up until then!
Worried about finding the shopping centre and what time everything closes on christmas eve
Any advice greatfully received.

Cité Europe?
Remember to take a packed lunch, breakfast and dinner, then repeat for however many days you go for... euro worth more than a pound now...(at some exchanges!)
But costly anyway, particularly with kids!
Heat though - good price.

I ended up at probably the same shopping centre. Got arrested on way home but that's a different story

We usually only do the cheap rail or ferry trips as a same day trip. If you’re going for a few days then there are hundreds of places you could go.

Day trip:
We always go to buy wine at the Carrefour in the Cite Europe shopping mall (close to Eurotunnel exit): carrefour-calais.com - it’s closed on Sundays (like most supermarkets in France). If you go on Sunday then wine shops like the British chain Majestic are usually open.

We will often drive to Bruges (beautiful town), Ghent or Brussels - all in Belgium. Bruges can be done as a day trip, you’ll just need to give yourself enough time.

In France we will look up which towns have local markets on that day and go to those.

Here’s some other places to try:
ferrycrossings.org.uk/travel-guides/france/villages-near-calais/

If we have friends wanting cheap cigarettes then Adinkerke in Belgium is the place to go - luckily not so often these days as people have moved to e-cigarettes.

Unfortunately he/she was saying that Paris and London were better 15 years ago, and 'not much is left' of them because they have since become 'Muslim cities'. Yes, they were being that narrow-minded and xenophobic.

Besides just being downright fictitious, it's a horrible sentiment to share and I'm glad it has been removed (thumbs up to the mod!)
this is the regular price, wheres the deal?

I must have completely misunderstood the comment. As from my interpretation I understood that London, Paris and other capitals aren't what they used to be, this includes other eastern cities. I completely missed their point then, this is what I get for posting at 3am

As suggested, Bruges, Ghent and Brussels are all lovely and very easy to get to. Ghent would actually be my pick- it's still totally compact and walkable (Brussels is a bit more spread out), but has stunning architecture but maybe a bit more variety than Bruges. It's also less touristy. Bruges is only 90 minutes from Calais, basically on one road, and Ghent is only a further 40 minutes or so following the same road, Brussels being a little further on again.

If you fancy driving further on still, it's not too much of a stretch from Brussels to go onto Maastricht in the Netherlands, and then Cologne and Dusseldorf in Germany (which are basically next to each other, but have quite different vibes). All good for at least a daytrip, and probably better with an overnight stay. If you have free dates around 8-14th Feb, all three of these cities celebrate carnival and there's an awesome atmosphere. In each case, the whole city comes out in extravagant fancy dress, pack something colourful and over the top

Head to Colmar a few hours south, or the Black Forest in Germany.

I know right.

I've seen them come in properly loaded up....you should see how many can get in the back of the trucks too, but that's another story !
Perfect for a “slow” drive to and from Amsterdam
If you do drive to Germany, Trier is the oldest city, about 4 hours from Calais.
Remember to drive through Luxembourg to fuel up, it's very cheap in comparism with France and Germany.
I live near wasserbillig and all the Germans come here to buy the cheap fuel, coffee and cigarettes!

If you want to stay close to the tunnel, there's some nice places around Boulogne-Sur-Mer and just to the north. There's a nice beach walk along the Bay of Wissant where you can see the white cliffs of Dover.

Others have mentioned Belgium - it's a good choice.

A bit further afield you have the Champagne region which is well worth a visit. Take in Reims and Epernay and visit a few champagne houses.
p&o have been doing some good deals as of late, such as £29 return with 6 free bottles of wine. Cost of stocking up in Calais seems more expensive than previous years.

Voted hot - went last week and visited the Crypt Basilique in Boulogne before going to Majestic wines.
How do you get these prices? Am I missing something? Just looked for a price to get back from Calais this week and can't find anything under £90...??

I hate it when eurotunnel produce these "deals".

Invariably it means that you will have to travel at some god awful hour like 5am to get it at this price, then you find that the cheap return fare isn't available on the dates you want to return etc. We use the tunnel to visit relatives in Netherlands every year 2 or 3 times... and most of the time it costs me £100+

I've rarely managed to get there and back for under £100.
You also need to be on a booze cruise or something because the £30 fare are for a single day, meaning cross in the morning and return at night. No good for us as we stay in Europe for the week if we go.

Just for a laugh, I put in some dates over xmas to go see my family....... €267 (£235). The tunnel is one giant ripoff.
