Normally £240. Found this in an email they sent to D of E leaders and mountain rescue team leaders. The software to display, manage, print and export to GPS is a free download.

As I understand it, while Mapyx Quo can export user data to any GPS that accepts any of the file formats it supports, it can only export the map itself to a GPS or app that has a Mapyx Quo license installed. So beware: don't assume that just because your GPS has a colour screen, it can import these maps! If I've got this wrong, I welcome correction in the comments (if these maps could be used with Garmin boxes, this would be an even hotter deal, as Garmin charge £299 for OS GB 1:25k).

They also have the 1:50 000 mapping on offer as well (same URL), but the saving is not as spectacular as it is for this.

And is adequate for people who neither need nor understand this product.

A carrier bag is free, but on Tryfan in winter, say, I'd still use a rucsac.

This is available on torrent sites

used to use Memory Map but everything is so much cheaper these days

Bing maps Ordnance Survey option is free and printable
same detail as 1:25000 Explorer

my Windows phone sorts out everything else

but then I'm only a casual walker not a rescue team leader !

But not much use in areas with no reception

Looks great - does anyone know if this can be used with any Android application?

Try out BackCountry Navigator first, you can download OS Maps & topographical maps for other countries to use offline. There's a free demo as well as the paid version.

backcountry is a cracking app. I used it in Peru and Bolivia and it worked really well

Bolivia? Don't you need the crackcountry app for that?

Ahh yes. Another of those situations where something is available for free, but deluded self-righteous types think that paying for it automatically guarantees them a better service.

I spend around £45 a month for my water bill. More than I do on wine

5p in Wales.

What a shame that they still charge do much for something wholly funded by the public.

I can only hope whoever thinks Google maps are comparable with the os25k doesn't ever go fell walking, as mountain rescue are busy enough.

Thanks, I just got a flamedeer for clicking to see what you replied

I use this openmtbmap.org/ on my Garmin when I'm out and about on my bike and it's free, would this be usable to good enough for walkers as well?

Are the maps not free now from Ordnance Survey OpenData?

Not at this scale. Its high level only open at the moment.

Not voting hot on this as do not like OS and their pricing. But big plug for Open Street Map. Amazing resource and totally open source and free. Far more detail than google maps as well without the mega corp data collection going on.

On android, you can use maverick to get os maps legally and for free. You have to plan what tiles you'll need before you go somewhere because it takes a while to download them without WiFi. This is a cracking deal though, I'm tempted.

thanks for explaining that, as I also had thought that the ordnance survey data was now free.

If that's true then why is it so prevalent in our country's management and politicians?

Exactly, every single one of those maps was produced with your tax money. OS was part of MOD last time I looked.

Can't work out if you're trolling, and saying that anyone who chooses to buy anything that's been pirated and is available on torrent sites is deluded and self-righteous; or if you know, but aren't saying, where all the current OSGB Explorer 1:25k mapping can be got (on a USB stick or otherwise), legally, for free.

Which is it?

If it's the second of those, legal and free, how about posting it as your first deal? I'd vote hot.

Lol some of the comments on here are priceless. These are for grown up hikers and climbers, not you chaps who walked your dog through a field once and think your bloody bear grylls.

and online - which is a bummer if you are 15 miles from the nearest 3g mast

Used openstreetmaps on a windows tablet trekking in the Atlas mountains and Tenerife volcanics this autumn. Really useful free resource when coupled with a gps tablet.

Will be looking into some of the above now. I've got a lot to learn yet. Any more recs/advice for backwoods trekking?
