Found these in the Leigh store, had a full shelf of them. Must be redesigning them so clearing them out in all Tesco stores. For a basic range i think this sauce is pretty good and a bargain for the size.

Says 116g of tomatoes per 100g of finished product . By comparison Heinz is 148g per 100g finished product . But its often 10 times the price for this size

I always check the contents of Tomato Sauce. Cheap sauces contain High Fructose Corn Syrup. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) (also called glucose-fructose, isoglucose and glucose-fructose syrup) is a sweetener made from corn starch that has been processed by glucose isomerase to convert some of its glucose into fructose. Cheaper than sugar - and helps the US get rid of a mountain of excess corn. Used in American Coke / Pepsi but NOT in Europe. Nasty stuff.

I dont see any of that in the ingredients.

Ingredients:Tomato Purée, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Cornflour, Salt, Acidity … Ingredients:Tomato Purée, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Cornflour, Salt, Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Flavouring, Onion Powder, Spice Extracts, Spices, Rice Flour

Pretty straight forward stuff and not much difference to the Heinz ingredients

Nasty stuff? It's just another form of sugar, your body doesn't know any different. Sucrose is table sugar and is also composed of a glucose and a fructose molecule. Honey is mainly a mixture of glucose, sucrose and fructose too. As it's sweeter than sugar so you can probably use less of it.

By comparison Lidl's ketchup has 172g per 100g finished product . Contains sugar, no fructose syrup, more expensive than your find, though.hot for the price and effort.
"Americans have linked Corn Syrup with obesity. Kraft announced in February 2015 a decision to sweeten its drinks with sugar instead of HFCS.
Heinz has created a sugar-sweetened version of its iconic ketchup, while Hunt’s removed HFCS from its entire retail ketchup line in 2010.

Pepsi US. have introduced a new line of soft drinks made with real sugar. "
US Researchers has found the HFSC can be as addictive as drugs. Maybe because, as you say, its sweeter than sugar. Not worth saving 50p for.

Reference? Scientists have proven excess calories cause obesity. Too much sugar or fat from any source makes you obese. There is nothing special about HFCS in terms of obesity because it's just a sugary syrup and is still 4 kcal per gram, just like any sugar or carbohydrate. HFCS can be addictive as drugs? A bit vague, is there evidence for that? Sugar is sugar and it's widely considered not addictive. I love cheese but I'm not addicted to fat and I love chicken breast yet I'm not addicted to protein. Enjoying the taste of something isn't the same as an addiction. You can be addicted to eating but that's behavioural and not limited to sugar.

A pepsi with HFCS is just as bad as a pepsi with "real" sugar, the same with ketchup. Of course they can be enjoyed in moderation but you can't solely blame the HFCS for making you fat if you drink 5 cans a day.
If I found anything in the shopping with high fructose corn syrup in it I used to squirt it straight down the plughole. After demonising it for a while I thought I'd actually find out why it's so bad, and basically it's just because of fructose - fruit sugar. Historically fruit wasn't anywhere near as abundant as vegetables and very seasonal. Glucose (dextrose) is basically blood sugar. Eat dextrose and you can immediately use it for energy. Fructose primarily gets turned into fat by your liver and then you use the fat for fuel, which is the same as alcohol. Eating lots of fructose and drinking loads of fruit juice is battering your liver just as hard as lovely, lovely booze. It's deal with like a toxin. But fruit juice is naturals and naturals is betters?!?!! Yes, just like lead and arsenic. Natural. And the other effect is that it doesn't produce an insulin spike. Insulin is the little fella in your blood that doesn't want you to get diabetes. Mr. Insulin gets annoyed by glucose and runs out when he sees it and tidies it all away. Sugar, white sugar, evil sugar what makes your teefs go black - that's made of glucose and fructose so when you have it Mr. Insulin notices you've been mucking up his yard and comes out and shouts. As mad as it seems filthy, poisonous, explosive, supremacist white sugar is kinda... 'healthier' than fruit sugar. That's not sitting well with you, is it? I did a lot of research trying to find something to defy this but thems the crazy truths. Fructose: fruit sugar, that's the reason high fructose corn syrup is bad.

But! Let's make more everyday sense out of this. In small doses that you're getting with a squirt of sauce you're not doing that much damage. Someone swigging a little glass of lovely, healthy, natural, danced on by angels apple juice is processing more fructose. If it's just something you have a little squirt of then know it's there, but don't worry so much. The real danger comes in things that people have loads of - and that's typically drinks. Pop 'n' Juice. If it's not diet pop it's got loads of sugar - if it's normal sugar that's not good, if it's also got glucose fructose syrup then it's worse.

Smoothies are also something to be aware of. At least with those you're getting some fibre, and vegetables are better than fruits, but we weren't designed to swallow 10 apples in 30 seconds. That's what gets me fuming about the Nutri-Bullet craze.

And by the way I'm not saying avoid this stuff and just eat grains of rice you've raised by hand and given names to. Just know the facts (as best as they are known at the time) about what you're eating. My diet is pseudo diabolical because I drink (if you hadn't guessed) and do alternate fasting because I'm a binge eater but still lose weight.

tldr; is HCFS bad? Yes, in the same way all fruit sugar is bad for you, but don't worry about it if you're only having a bit on your chips.
but have you tasted it? it tastes like crap. from poundstretcher u can get 1.5kg bottle for like 3 quid of heinz. thats good value for good taste. if you need cheap ketchup yeah go for it. but id be sick after 1 kilo of this stuff lol and i like my ketchups..
Got to love HUKD; a 28p ketchup bottle spawns a heated debate about the science of sugar and obesity. (_;)
