Virgin Post so go easy.

I think this Is an excellent deal for an excellent 4g phone. Very underrated and generally unnoticed brand but an excellent product.

I was after a simple budget handset for my dad so after reading all the reviews and deals on this site of the budget handsets I decided to try a few for myself.

The Alcatel looks and feels great with a faux metal effect on the unibody frame. Good specs too and I think overall it's better than even the mighty Moto G. Bold statement right!  However, I am very familiar with the moto having bought one for my nephew for last xmas and spent a lot of time using it recently as a comparison before making a decision.  While the moto's screen is undoubtably higher resolution (320 ppi vs 245ppi for the idol mini) the idol minis screen is just as bright and in truth you really won't notice it unless you're watching a movie (why people watch movies on their phones is lost on me). Sometimes, pixel density isn't worth as much as screen technology. While the Moto G has a lovely screen I still prefer the super amoled screen on my trusty old Samsung Galaxy S2. It's far better outdoors in sunlight and even on its lowest brightness is more than bright enough for general use, meaning you're not always draining the battery.

The Idols UI/ overlay is really impressive. Light weight and with useful features. Get this, it even has double tap to turn the screen on and off like the LG G2. Are you freakin' kidding me.  It works well too and you can set up a password/code to use with it too. Also has lock screen showing basic info such as time and weather etc.

I like when manufacturers have decent UI's as vanilla android is not as easy to use for the uninitiated user

I won't bore you with all the specs as you can google it but suffice to say you won't lose out. It come's with Android jelly bean 4.3 and I don't know if it will get Kit Kat let alone Android L (unlike the moto g) but I don't care. It doesn't need it and there are many phones with jellybean 4.1 working perfectly well.

I'm so impressed with this cheap 4g phone I'm thinking of giving my father my much loved Samsung Galaxy S2 and taking the idol mini. It matches and even betters it in some ways with a slick operation courtesy of its quad core power vs dual core and a much lighter but still fully featured UI.  The only downside I can see so far after a few days playing with it is the 8 megapixel camera is not on par with the S2's. Same pixel count but very different quality optics in use. It's not bad, far better than moto g 1st gens. Probably on par with 2nd gen Moto G but that doesn't have 4 g and is £50 more expensive. Oh yeah

The Alcatel definitely gets my vote and if the larger Onetouch idol 2s with the 5 screen comes available I would love that.

Be aware, most of the staff at cpw won't even know what the phone is let alone that they sell it. I called 5 local branches to see if they had stock and each said 'no'. However, when I went into my local and asked them to double check they were clueless until I pointed it out to them. Then they checked and surprise, surprise, they had loads.

The Huawei y550, while offering good specs (64 bit chip anyone) for the upgrade price of £50 on cpw really feels cheap and the U.I skin lets it down. Good simple mode which makes it easier to use for the olds but you can download many simple launchers from the play store that will do the same thing. In my brief experience with it it froze a couple of times and it just feels cheap. Cheaper that the Y330 which has a nice grippy rubber back. Not a bad phone by any means and puts more expensive stuff to shame but not something you really want to pull out of your pocket and my dads a show off. He's also forgetful so don't want to trust him with anything too expensive as he'll probably lose or damage it.  Definitely a bargain for the upgrade price at CPW but no match for the idol at the full price. Spend a little more and you won't regret it.

I Considered a lumia windows phone, the 635 4g caught my eye but they look cheap in those childish colours. Yes, I know they come in black too but according to the cpw staff they never seem to be in stock as they're not that popular. Also, while OS is slick it's also boring and it only has 512mb or ram and in this day and age of ever growing app updates, I think it's short sighted. Also, there's no flash and the 5 mp camera which no better that the moto g. Yes, I did use it.

In my opinion, the best budget handsets around £100 is this, the Moto G 4g and the Sony E3 although the E3 has only 4 gb internal memory vs 8gb and the beautiful UI is large and takes up memory and can bog the phone down. Feels great in the hand too with soft rubberised texture.

Check out all three and let us know your thoughts.

Peace

Moto G has a better screen, bigger battery, also runs kitkat (and as of today lollipop) but the Alcatel one runs Jellybean, however this phones camera is better. Seems a good deal, depends what you are after!

Also, just to confirm it has 8 gb of memory, not 4gb. Still have over 5.9gb space after loading a few apps and updates. Working NFC just got a score on Antutu of 19653

Thanks for taking the time to post OP you should add PAYG Upgrade to the title to make it clear

Which Moto G has lollipop arrived on today? There's at least 3 UK versions of it.

Moto G 2nd Gen, it's not a widespread rollout just yet though.

Not surprised - took a while for 4.4.4 to hit across the range. I'm waiting for my Moto G LTE to update....

Just to clarify it was a soak test Motorola are doing. Just wanted to clear that up incase anyone reads this wondering why their Moto G 2nd Gen hasn't got lollipop yet

I knew they were doing soak tests on the Moto X - general opinion seemed to be they wouldn't be doing them on the G.

£109 + minimum top up if your not due a payg upgrade. I would have had this for a backup phone at £89

Seems like they are now:

seen multiple sources reporting soak testing on the G. Can't be too far off the official rollout now anyway.

Update: Sorry if I drone on but it's nearly 4 am and I'm suffering brain fade!

Had this for a week now and and i'm even more impressed with this phone that I could have imagined. I can't believe people don't know about this phone. Probably because the so called 'review' sites don't pay any attention to Alcatel, assuming they only produce low end rubbish but this phone has opened my eyes.

Honestly, the only slight downside to this phone I have yet to find is the rear camera. It is definitely better than most budget to mid range phones and absolutely adequate for day to day pics. Just don't expect high quality snaps if you zoom in or in low light. However, the pics are clear in daylight and if you want better, get a proper camera.

In my humble opinion I'd rather have this gorgeous slim phone and have a separate compact or bridge camera all for less than £200.

Remember, this is the idol 2 mini not the original idol mini. This is the equivalent of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini (which has just been reduced by Three). Both really good phones, very similar specs and I nearly went for the s4 mini before it was reduced in price but the Alcatel trumps it. The only advantage of the s4 mini is it has a better camera. Same mp but much better software and optics. However, in everyday use the Alcatel just feels faster. In fact, it feels fast compared to anything. I can't explain it but it is just as well optimised as the moto g so it feels fluid on limited hardware. I have compared this phone to my friends' who have LG G2 and G3, IPhone 5s and 6's between them and it seemingly keeps pace when performing basic everyday tasks.

Of course, I'm not saying it's in the same league as those high end devices overall but if the idol mini s had an apple logo on it most people wouldn't bat an eyelid. Also, just to clarify, I don't play games or stream movies to my phone so the high end cpu's and gpu's of those phones are wasted on me.
But I like speed and efficiency, just don't want to have to spend £300+ to get it. I had considered an used HTC one as I know from experience that phone feels fast and fluid, but I don't feel the need now.

Anyway, be interested to hear if anyone else has used this phone and their thoughts.

Trolls, go find something else to do.

excellent mobile

Has gone even more in price so rushed down to my local store which was showing in stock. Out of stock online so couldn't do click and collect. Asked for the sim free price and was told £129.99 . Refused to buy it. Shame though.

Can't believe it's gone down to £69 in the sales.

Total bargain and will buy another if I can find one.

Almost a no-brainer for £69. If I hadn't bought a £96 phone (2Gb RAM, but no 4G or NFC) about a month ago, I would've got this & saved some money in the bargain.

P.S. op needs to change the thread title to reflect the price reduction for this to get any notice / heat

P.P.S. never mind, just noticed it has been posted afresh: Alcatel OneTouch Idol 2 Mini S 4g mobile phone £69.95 @ CPW

Well, it was worth a re-post to be honest.
