Why are these so much more expensive than like a Flymo hover mower? Serious question!

usually a rotary gives a finer (lower) and more even cut than a conventional mower. Overkill for most but usefull for those that want the bowling green finish.

Don't you mean cylinders give a better cut than rotary mowers?
I remember trying to force my dads push a long cylinder mower when I was 10, that hadn't had its blades sharpened in 20 years! It gave a great cut when sharp and grass was dry. Moved to electric rotary and they just clog up if grass damp. Then got a petrol rotary which I still use and am happy with but still clogs sometimes. Never used electric cylinder but would think they are second only to petrol cylinder.
The best method at present is pet rabbits loose in garden (now that they have stopped digging) and a dog going around eating the pellets! Very short grass and little mess.

because its like cutting grass with scissors rather than whacking it with knife.

I believe another advantage of cylinder mowers is that they give those classic lawn stripes that you just can't get with a flymo!

I have a Qualcast electric mower which dates from 1991 and has been used every season since. The only thing that has gone wrong is the drive belt snapped which was easily replaced with the part costing £4.
