Seems a good deal with the cheap internal SATA hard drives that are around at the moment. Only thing that would be better is if it had RAID 1 capabilities but still a good price.

anyone know if this is like the Netgear SC101 NAS that formats the drive using a proprietory format that makes it unreadable in any other device

EDIT:Scrap that Scan seem to of stopped doing the AVforums home delivery.

Been waiting for one of these to come up on special somewhere. Have a pair of 500GB Sata's that it seems a shame to leave sitting on a shelf.

Ive got one of these - similar to OP but allows quick swapping of sata drives, very good altho not raid or nas, has switchable fan for quiet cooling

Dont see why - this isnt a NAS, so would have no OS capable of formatting a drive.

"fan on the backside"!!
Yes please, it is getting hot/sweaty.

Can you not still get free postage with scan via the AV forum?

I have been away on holiday for over three weeks.

Its not particularly relevant - i just wanted to rub it in!!! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Remember to check if you have any internal IDE or Sata ports free because this USB external is more than twice as slow as IDE and Sata.

I hope you got sunburn:p

Good price. I always keep one or two enclosures handy for when someone knocks out the boot sector of their hdd. If it can't be fixed by a repair install just replace the offending hdd with a new one and put the useless one in the enclosure. You can usually then rescue all the important files (one way or another).

thanks for the link very good offer imo.

it's a real pain in the **** getting a hexus account and scan account setup together for free delivery damn
i've had easier times

Didn't know that. Good advice. Rep added :-D

This is the cheapest solution, buy an enclosure and two 2TB drives? How much would that work out.

Or just boot with a Linux LiveCD. Then you can either repair the error by installing a clean MBR, or copy the data to another drive. No disassembly required.

Hi can someone dumb this down for me a bit.

So I can plug in any hard-drive to this and use it as an external hard-drive?

yes
only hard drives that have a SATA interface
so no usb, or ide drives.

Posting the link to the review makes it clearer and more helpful, no?

Don't let the speed put you off. You won't want to install games or intensive applications on to a USB2 connected drive, but for music, photos, and backups your be surprised how fast they are and the convience of being able to move them around is great. Even better being able to hold 2 drives, alot more tidyer than carrying 2 seperate external drives around with you with their own seperate PSU.

Excellent find and looks very solid I shall be ordering one!

Depends if you like the quiet - I've had 3 of those enclosures and every one of them has an incredibly noisy fan (sounds like a box of bees being shaken).

2x 1tb drives in one of these icybox enclosures and you've got ~20000 albums stored, speed doesn't really matter just for streaming to your hifi.

Pretty sure they don't have 2TB drives yet....you can get 1TB drives for under £100 nowadays so probably around £200 give or take £30 for 2TBs of disk space providing this enclosure supports 1TB drives...some of the older/cheaper ones only go up to 500GBs a drive (or less) so it's best to check first.

Great find, heat and rep added. Thanks!

Slightly off topic, does anyone know of a cheap 4 bay external hard disk enclosure?

I am looking for something similar to this, for example scan.co.uk/Pro…582 but cheaper - hot swap is not necessary, just an all in one bay for 4 drives....

Thanks!

zebrum;2389232

I hate charts like this as they can be so miss-leading. Comparing against reference results is pointless as who has a reference system??

If your going to put up speed results like that, test the main system disk as well and compare to that. This then removes any system specific limitations and gives a much more reliable result.

www.span.com do one but it's still going to cost £99 and it'll need two USB ports.

Hi,shoot me with a feather,IDE beats SATA :w00t: 16MB cache ?,at least for that test.

Cheers BOB

Yes, because that particular Hard Drive (connected to an IDE interface) is quicker than the other Hard Drive (which is connected to a SATA interface).

It doesn't matter one jot what interface you choose, be it IDE or SATA or SCSI 160 or SAS or whatever you like - it's the speed of the actual Hard Drive that dictates it's performance.

(obviously this doesn't apply to slow interfaces like USB2 - in that case the drive is faster than the interface, so the interface becomes the limiting factor)

Just what I was looking for. Will make good use of the two SATA drives I had sitting around. Thanks.

Hopefully they still have stock tomorrow when mu Hexus registration should go through then get free delivery

Voted hot

EliTom

Can you access both drives at once?
With no raid i assume it doesn't show up as one volume, so does it just show up as 2 seperate USB disks?

Now ordered with Hexus free shipping

heat left

thanks

EliTom

From the datasheet at the raidsonic website

* JBOD - "Just a bunch of discs":PC detects 2 HDD's separately by one USB … * JBOD - "Just a bunch of discs":PC detects 2 HDD's separately by one USB cable.

So two separate drives.

Mine came today haven't got a sata drive to stick in it yet however im very impressed with the build quality and size! I was expecting some massive enclosure! Seems to have gone out of stock now.

Got mine up and running

All works just fine - just need a router with USB NAS for it now.

Only thing is the fan is quite noisy :-(
