Bought! This will be paying for itself on the first journey! Thank you!

I'm probably being stupid, but can you buy this card if you have two under 5's (who would travel free), or do you have to have a child aged 5-15 to qualify for this particular card? What sort of percentage savings do you get on the adult seats and are you limited to off peak travel? Thanks for any help xx

Oops, just seen answer to first question on t and c - is there another railcard that would help us as a couple if our children can go free or do we just need to be super organised and plan journeys months ahead? Thanks

Does it work for the 16-25 year old card too?

you can also use your tesco clubcard points to buy this. We find this reduces the cost of rail travel by sooo much and when getting it with clubcard points it's almost like getting it for nothing. Well worth it.

You can use F&F just buy a child ticket for one of your under 5's. It's not terribly clear but it does say to do that somewhere.

We already have a F&F railcard, I will have to check when it expires... If you could use this deal to top it up for an extra year for £20, that would be awesome!

Found this in the T&Cs

My child is under five. Can I still use a Family & Friends Railcard?

Children under five years of age travel for free so do not have to have a ticket for travel. However, at least one child in your group will need to have a child rate ticket for you to be able to use a Family & Friends Railcard. So, if the children in your group are all four years of age or younger, you can buy one of them a discounted child ticket so that any accompanying adult can benefit Family & Friends Railcard discount.

This will apply I think...

My Family & Friends Railcard from the online service, it is about to expire, how do I renew it?

Providing the expiry date of your Railcard is within 30 days you will be able to renew it. Just log back into your account and select your Railcard from your account summary screen, confirm your details and make your payment. Your renewed Railcard will then be sent to you.

they have to be over 5 so basically buy a seat for one of them.... I booked tickets to london from birmingham yesterday (£12 return total) for a child and myself... it said I had recieved a discount of £76 pound it if i had turned up on that day....not sure how hey calculate it but £20 for a family railcard gave me a saving of £6 i think on the tickets i bought , so in a journey or two its payed for itself x

silly questions but never had one of these before. what % of discount do u get off train travel? do u always have to be travelling with children?? if so are there ways around it? do u only get discount when booking trains online or can you use it when buying tickets at station? sorry for all the q's. Cheers

From memory, think it's 30% on adult fares and 60% on kids.
Will pay for itself in a journey or two normally.

Don't know about booking tickets online etc sorry. If caught travelling without kids don't know what they would try and do.

You need to travel with a child - if not you will be asked to pay the difference once your ticket is inspected on the train. Best read the terms and conditions on the web site.

Regarding discounts you get this when booking online or at the station.

Do not buy any seats in rows W & V in the stalls. In particular do not buy through Lastminute.com. These seats don't have a full view of the stage and for parts of the performance you will only see the actors feet! The set is a two storey set and some of the view is restricted by the balcony above the stalls!

Thanks soled73 x

Good discount so voted hot.

But I think it's a bit ridiculous that it only gets you a discount as long as you have kids with you.

I bought a ticket last year - and got the discount as my daughter was travelling with me. Our plans changed and she got off half way to our destination.

The ticket guy then came around - about 30 minutes after we got on - and accused me of being fraudulent and charged me the full adult fare - even though I had paid!

Jobsworths like that really irritate me because if he was doing his job properly he would have already been up and down the train a couple of times since we got on - and seen that we had the right ticket for the journey and my daughter would have been with me.

I always buy a ticket if possible before getting on the train - sometimes it's physically not possible - people pi55ing about in front of you. Some ticket inspectors are fine and will sell you a ticket but some are little Hitler's and really get off on the very limited power they think they have!

Very good deal. Thanks OP.

You do not need to have a child between 5-15. Provided that you buy a ticket for them. Forexample: If you have a child age 4 you normally does not qualify however if you buy ticket for 4 year old then you can qualify. Probably your saving will be more than childs ticket for some journesy so it still worth it. This is how I read from the web site. I hope this helps.

I've just been jiggling the figures on this an working out if best to get one ahead of a trip to London in half term. In my case I need return to London liverpoool street for 2 adults 1 child and it seems the 'Group Saver' is a better deal for me, without laying out the £20 for a railcard. Good deal though so voting HOT

Apparently you can get a friends and family railcard for £15 of Tesco clubcard vouchers....just in case anyone has some they need to use up before they expire....

Thanks op
