If you're looking for a cheap portable amp to better your listening experience then this is the best one. It enhances the volume, sound quality and battery life of the device. It gives a more detailed treble, rounder bass, and an overall better sound signature than the parent music player.

Cheap, paid around the same for an E3 a few years ago.

How can the amp give better sound quality then the player?

Garbage in > Garbage out....

sure it can tweak the EQ but to say better sound quality I think is misleading.

Original Poster

If the player is poor then it can only improve sound quality slightly. However if the player is average like most mp3 players and mobile phones, then it can and will improve sound quality significantly. Have a look at the Amazon reviews.

It will not improve sound quality unless you are using high impedance headphones. ie some circum-aural headphones.
If you are using in ear phones which are designed for portable use no benefit Sq wise.

It wil however improve battery life if you set your mp3 player low and amp it with the e5.
I have one and It is suprisingly well made for a cheap amp but I dont like the vol rocker though

Yup - nothing to with 'sound quality'. If you're trying to drive a big set of headphones from a small audio device - like a mobile phone - this can help.

Used to use one with my Grados and my Nokia and made a BIG difference.

I have one for my Phonak Audéo Perfect Fit PFE 122 and it really makes a huge difference they are only 32 Ohm - it opens up the frequency range somewhat and I tested them in the studio with a DPA 4006 reference microphone. It makes up for poor outputs on portable devices like my HTC desire and I believe ipods are even worse.

If you lower the output on the mp3 player and then use the amp to boost the signal this would degrade the sound by worsening the signal to noise ratio. So to use this correctly put the mp3 player at full then use the amp to control the volume.

Yeh I got some of these and definitely make a difference too with my headphones.
Although don't use it as much with my Samsung Galaxy S as with the Voodoo Kernel the on-board chip is capable of powering my headphones without an amplifier now

I would agree with that setup it would degrade the sound quality but i was agreeing with the improvement in battery life. The way you suggest would decrease battery life although improve the E5 performance.

This product is great for Sony A845 which has a poor top end volume due to EU regulations

If there's anyone looking for something with more PUNCH, this is worth a look:

Received one a couple of days ago, worked out at around 36 quid delivered, and was shocked with how this improved the listening experience with my hf's. Greater soundstage, deeper more present bass and just far more detail in general, than what I got from my ipod before.

1 bloke makes them all, I sent him an email as I was interested and he explained how everything worked and even preset it to my model of headphones..top bloke!

would this be any good to power my hf's attached to my gaming monitor?

Well, thanks to stupid EU regulations my iPod's top volume level is limited to a stupidly low level. (if I want to deafen myself then that should be up to me)

Even using low impedance headphones it's still too quiet for my taste at top whack so these can be very useful gadgets.

OK ordered. I hope it's quality & not another surplus piece of junk

About to order one but not used Deal Extreme before. I assume they are based in Hong Kong, so what happens with customs fees and returns of goods if faulty ?

There is only one headphone amp worth owning and that is the CMoy. Any audiophiles reading this will know what i'm talking about.

these are also good to use with the audio out on ipods (the bottom socket) since it bypasses the internal headphone amplifier which, in ipod touches especially, is terrible.
in this case it does increase the sound quality.

Would this help with me listening to itunes via a macbook or through an ipod touch with Audio Technika AD700s? Would be using on the TV aswel for gaming. Very good sound at min, sometimes bit of hissing.

Anyone know how much difference this will make sound quality wise, when listening to my iPod with Sennheiser HD 595?

Bomster - noticeable difference IMO.

Looked through some older posts about DealExtreme deliveries taking 4 weeks, or not arriving, or short of items, and took the decision to get from Amazon.

Extra £4 but less chance of developing an Ulcer !

It would drive them better so the sound would be much better I think. I have tried it with my HTC desire and my Audio Technica ATH-W1000 cans and it made a huge difference.

They are very good with my Orange San Francisco. Boost the volume (especially bass) to a decent level.

Ordered (but from Amazon) as I have an OSF with low volume.

Just wanted to say thanks to the OP. If these are as good as it looks like they might be it will improve my listening no end

Ordered from amazon, same as above poster, looks a great item, for the sake of £4 i dont fancy waiting about 4 weeks for it. (also the off chance something is faulty, returns process is a million times easier)
I realise spending an extra 30% on top of the cost is not the spirit of the site!

Hey no probs mate

I have an OSF and have been suffering from the low sound levels that everyone is reporting which is why I ordered. This amp should help until I invest in a dedicated MP3 like a Sony or a Cowon.

I've bought loads of stuff from DealExtreme. It usually takes up to a couple of weeks to arrive but I've always got the goods and they've always been as described. I've had one or two things I've needed to return but I've followed their process and they usually send the replacement before they get the faulty item back and they've offered me the choice of an extra item to cover the postage in the past. Items less than £18 won't be a problem with import duty. Be sure to read and understand the description and reviews of the items and look at all the pictures on the page to make sure you have a clear idea about what you are ordering.

Post up your deal for an assembled cmoy for less than £10.91 and I'll vote it hot.

The E5 is well worth owning, for just over a tenner. Get back under your bridge.

Not going to have problems with customs fees for £10. Even if its higher you rarely have to pay it either (unless its big, or through a courier etc).

4 weeks, is more to the extreme - majority will come within 2 weeks - delivery assuming all goes well is 4 days. DX sometimes has issues with knowing their stock levels (not actually a stock holder and their suppliers also lie) - most delays are in the dispatch stage.

For £10, they are unlikely to ask you to return it - I know its a hassle and slow (stupid support replies) but they will probably just send you a new one. Even if you return it within 90 days they refund the return costs.

Not that being in the UK makes it any easier to return items under warranty sometimes.... Retailer = go to manufacterer, Manufacterer = to go retailer - thats if they are even in this country! varies of course.

Hi Mr Hot and Just Me. Thanks for taking the time to post those replies. Looking at those answers it would probably been fine to use DX, but I'm an impatient s*d sometimes and Amazon have always provided me with a good shopping experience. If it had been half-price that might have been a diff matter though.

Once again, cheers for the heads-up, will make me feel more likely to use them for the next deal I spot on here

Ooohh go for a cowan they generally support more file formats like FLAC which sony doesnt tend to support.

I have a cowan d2 but they are discontinued

Ordered, thanks for the info. Hot deal, cheers OP.

These things are brilliant, around a tenner is an absolute bargain. I have mine coupled with Goldring NS-1000 headphones (RRP £150 headphones which regularly go for around £50 on Play.com) and the sound quality together is excellent. They really benefit from the extra juice that the amp provides. I get best results by connecting it to my iPod using a Fiio LOD cable, which you can get for a few quid.

Not on any ipod past fourth generation it isn't.
I Have a Fiio E1, bought from Deal Extreme, this plugs directly into the ipods dock connector. The volume and sound quality are noticeably higher and I can now listen to my music at the volume I want without having to increase the volume adjustment in Itunes. Battery life has gone down a bit but that's not a problem as It's a rare occasion I will have the ipod on for more than four hours at a time

Whats the bonus for using an LOD cable instead of the normal 3.5mm jack?

Bomster

It means you are using the unamplified lineout which will mean the signal will be cleaner for amplification. To be honest though if you want to go through the dock you may as well go for the Fiio E1 for 70p more as this has a built in line out cable and is more compact.

I'm guessing you dont know much about decent headphones, They need POWER like a decent pair of speakers needs a good amp. Most headphone outs are pretty poor, including ipods. However it is possible to get a clean pre e.q. line out level from an ipod using one of these . Combine that with this amp and a top quality pair of cans and your in business
