I have analysed the background behavior of ES File Explorer, a product of EStrong who are based in China, and found that it regularly sends data to:

- edge-star-shv-01-hk3.facebook.com
- ec2-52-221-70-39.ap-southeast1.compute.amazonaws.com
- 123.125.114.8 - no reverse DNS so it's a private IP in China
- 180.97.33.177 - no reverse DNS so it's a private IP in China
- 115.239.211.176 - no reverse DNS so it's a private IP in China

and many more IP addresses located in China.

I still use ES File Explorer but with non-authorized outgoing traffic blocked but will give File Manager Pro a try. Thanks OP.

Cheers OP, will give this a try as ES File Explorer was getting a bit intrusive. Hopefully it has:

1) Back up apps
2) LAN/SMB
3) Direct copy to another Android device using ad-hoc network
I have a file manger installed but recently discovered that only the stock file manager can carry out certain tasks. Never found 3rd party file managers had any features worth having. Jmo. Oh. I have solid file manager. Don't use it though

I quite like the Asus file manager, especially for copy and pasting. It remembers last file destination for ease of transfer.

How do you block non-authorized traffic?

How do you block non-authorized traffic?

Usually a firewall with a feature to block specified IP addresses. Have a look here for some suggestions.
Try Solid Explorer folks, it's not free but it's excellent.
Solid is good. Gets recommended on the android podcasts I listen to. They slated es file explorer. This one posted also looks good so I'll add some heat

Did you use "OS Monitor" app to analyse the traffic in background or other apps? Thanks

Your post has no meaning in context to this deal which is free. Of course there would be paid for apps that might be better than this app but then it's your choice whether you want to pay for the additional features.

In the link provided there is an app "NoRoot Data Firewall" that can see what websites or IP addresses a particular app is connecting to.

Originally, I installed ES Explorer and other apps known for skullduggery (Dolphin Browser springs to mind immediately) on the mEmu Android emulator for Windows. I used WireShark to monitor the network and discovered what was being sent out. It later transpired that I could have just used an Android firewall that monitors outgoing IP addresses (such as NoRoot Firewall) to give me the same information - much easier!

The "meaning" of my post is to make people aware of a superior alternative, especially for those saying they're still using outdated versions of ES.
I've been using MIXplorer since all the store ones started taking the mick, free, regular updates and very powerful...

Thanks...ES file explorer seems to have lately been overtaken by intrusive ads.

Does the ES File Explorer Pro have the same issues too?

I am trying FX Explorer which promises no collection of data and no ads but some extra functionality with unlocker though.

Oh absolutely. I contacted eStrong who maintained that their developers forgot to remove some code. Several updates later and this still remains a serious issue.

ES Explorer allows connection to smb servers, FTP, cloud storage. Users should use a firewall before logging into server storage from within ES.
Thanks for the post, OP. Gave this a try though and it is very basic - you can't even add a folder shortcut and there's no dark UI. It has a pretty ugly UI on the whole and to be honest I would have been gutted if I'd spent £1.49 on this. Worth a try though!

Oh dear, its easy to take things for granted.
Would it be possible to put what you wrote about ES File Explorer actions on their public ratings with comment Dont use, steals your data or contact Google with your findings to have app taken down?
I will move off ES when able.
If you're using any version of ES, ditch that sucker now.
Astro has always worked for me.

This had been done a long time ago. I will now try out this File Manager Pro
Can't believe anyone is still using ES, it's been an accepted joke for years now
Have uninstalled. Have used better.

I do not get any adverts with the Pro version
It appears that File Manager Pro also contact servers upon startup - mainly servers hosted by Amazon but also a private IP address located in California. I've just tried out Ghost Commander which is open sourced and it appears to be free of undesired server accesses but the FTP client fails when being accessed within LAN and the SMB client fails when attempting to connect to Windows 10 hosted NAS (due to lack of support for SMB version 2.)

Total Commander is now my choice of Android Explorer with good support for FTP (including SSL encrypted FTP) and faultless SMB access to Windows 10 SMB servers. No unusual network activity has been detected thus far.

One post above yours, I mentioned Total Commander. Supports SMB 2.0 as used in Windows 10 v 1709 and upwards. Furthermore, no unusual network activity either. SMB client plugin for Total Commander is required as a separate plugin.

I am quite new to Total Commander but already discovered a couple of annoying bugs that causes it to hang, such as setting WebDAV parameters for access to my own cloud server and for some reason, one of the settings allows for copy and paste (in the form of a file). Clearly, a WebDAV setting should not be copy and paste-able and if it is copied, then Total Commander attempts to copy it as a file and subsequently hangs.

For most of the common operations, it worked fine. Transferring files to and from my Windows SMB server was fine and most other common operations are fine - it's just a few of the more obscure features that seems to have been developed a little carelessly. I will contact the developers about these careless bugs.

I've found ES Explorer Pro is good without adverts.
I shall check whether it makes unusual network connections.
