The world has fallen under the control of the Shinra Electric Power Company, a shadowy corporation controlling the planet's very life force as mako energy. In the sprawling city of Midgar, an anti-Shinra organization calling themselves Avalanche have stepped up their resistance. Cloud Strife, a former member of Shinra's elite SOLDIER unit now turned mercenary, lends his aid to the group, unaware of the epic consequences that await him.

Incredible game. Squeenix have done such a good job.

I don't care if it's been broken up. What there is to play is so faithful to the original where it counts, and the changes are for the better.

they’re not that bad! It only took me 25 hours to do the second challenge.

I’ve not been on it since I got the trophy for doing the hard pull up challenge.

Needed a break haha

Very true. I'm super interested to see how part 2 turns out. I'm really hoping we get an open world and get to fly the highwind. Maybe that's part 3...

Yeah, finding Betty's cats and spending two hours in Hojo's lab pulling levers were changes excellently done.

Of course no-one knows where they are going, but they snuffed out the mystery of who Sephiroth is and what he is doing that occupies you for two discs of the original. And the Kingdom Hearts-esque ending chapter really does not bode well for a coherent and well-conceived of narrative going forward. The combat, character models, and music in this were all top class, but it has some serious flaws in pacing, its accessibility to new players, its environmental textures, and, as I said, its general story.

You'll have to point out where I said it is because I am not seeing it.

I'm a little reluctant to explain because I don't want to ruin it for anybody who hasn't played it yet and may come cross this comment accidentally. But the things you mentioned about Sephiroth make sense in THIS game.

I never mentioned 'things' about Sephiroth at all. I suggested that the main motivating factor, the impetus for the characters' journey (and therefore ours) of the original was gone, so not really 'faithful to the original where it counts'. However, whether that is a positive or a negative is a matter of personal preference.

As for the repositioning of the major characters making sense, which is a different question entirely, I would say no, not really. This links to my accessibility for new players comment, but I couldn't help but think that if I had not played the original a few times, watched Advent Children and played Crisis Core, past a surface level understanding, I would have absolutely no idea what was going on, and not in the intriguing way of the original. By the end of the game, we are just expected to know who everyone who is not one of the main four is, and why we should care without it being communicated to us through the world or the characters themselves - our prior knowledge is meant to add nuance, and that is just laziness (as you'll know, there are some other contrivances that I won't mention as that would spoil it for anyone who has not played it). I thought the game was good, though far too padded out with pointless filler, right up until the end of Chapter 14, then, yeah, not so much.

This game wasn't perfect from a game design perspective but from a nostalgia perspective, for me it was perfect.

I really don't understand why you so concerned about new players though? If i was a new player I'd just role with it, if I wanted I'd go research it, talk to people or even play the original.

It is definitely scary to think they might just completely screw this up but that's also the same thought I had when it was first announced. Ultimately thought I think it's exciting that this isn't what we all thought it would be and no matter what happens the experience of the original will always be there.
Excellent game along with an amazing soundtrack
