How will I get on with this? Seeing as I've only played the most recent one through to completion, always been interested in FF but haven't played too many other than that and XIV

It's a particular one even amongst all of the ff series. I personally found it pretty boring and weird but a lot of people loved it. It's not turn by turn and it has a system of gambit for actions you want your ai friends to use during fights.
Then again, a lot of people criticised ff13 and I liked it so maybe I'm just different
I would advise you to have a quick look at some youtube videos of fights to give yourself an idea without spoiling yourself the story in case you're interested.
At this price it is a nice offer though.
My partner recently got platinum on FF XV and it was her 1st FF game. Now looking to fill the void until FF VII remake. I've suggested either X-X2 or this XII. Any guidance would be much appreciated

X is amazing, my favourite game especially with that OST. X-2 is a nice addition if you enjoyed the story of X, otherwise nothing transcendent. The 9th is very nice as well, although kinda previous gen compared to X.

To me this is the best ff combat system. Love the gambit system
With already owning the PS2 version, I was skeptical of buying this, but the speed play modes really improve the combat, especially with the possible auto-pilot grinding sections.

Those skeletons on the bridge being the first major one.

Got this last week and started it today, more than worth this price.
I still have sealed PS2 version I bought ages ago for £2...but am thinking about picking up this one ...
