To confirm, these are the 'With Special Offers' prices, so you get adverts/promos when the device is on standby.

You'll need to add an extra £10 to get the device without the ads/promos (or might be able to get them removed for free if you ask Amazon nicely!)

It's possible to put Google Play on these, you need to enable “Apps from Unknown Sources” (making your tablet that little bit less secure): howtogeek.com/232…et/
Gmail doesn't work at the moment for many, however (crashes on launch), though Amazon's client is servicable. And you can't override the Amazon user interface (without some more serious changes).

You can still add Underground apps for free to Amazon Fire tablets.

But Amazon's Actually Free/Underground program will slowly be shut down (2019)

The benefit of having the Play Store probably outweighs any security issue (you are "just adding another program which can add programs from a store"). But you are still stuck with the Amazon-focused user interface, I haven't looked into the possibility of replacing the interface much.

Is YouTube etc all working with Google play. I will be using it primarily as a cheap echo device and for browsing with chrome, Netflix and YouTube.
Thanks.

anyone know of similar specced, good priced tablets 8" or 10", but with 4G? Or a device to make these usable on the road - for occasional interweb access. I have my mobiles, so could hotspot them, but thats a nuisance to be turning on/off.

Need a tablet for a xmas present and wanted to avoid a fire due to the locked down OS. I know i can side load Play etc so might just go for it. It needs to be able to play Roblox and I'm worried that they pull support for it again. Any other Android tablets that compare spec and price wise?

When installing those Google APKs, do you have to install the specific versions that the "howtogeek" page links to? as those are quite old versions now. Shouldn't we be installing the latest versions of those Google APKs, in the order listed?

Is the currys deal not better for the 10 inch one with the £10 voucher?

this is the offer I've been waiting on since this launched. the 7" tablet for £30 has been great but a wee bit small and slow for some use. perfectly fine for reading books, and decent size too for that. this one will replace my ipad

tell me more what voucher?

Not sure what to get. I just need a device for my folks to use for their Philips Hue set up. They don't use computers etc so nothing on the device would be used! It'd just sit their as a controller!!

Fire 7 for £29.99 or a used (on Amazon Warehouse) Fire 6 HD for £27.

Any ideas?

Bought the 32gb HD 10 at £150 last week (delivered yesterday). Just chatted (online) to amazon customer service and they refunded the difference. Took 5 mins.

Just an FYI in case this happened to someone else.

I got the 7" version for £30 to use with my yeelink lights but ended up using it for far more. if the app runs then the 7" version should be more than fine. no need to pay another £80 unless they are going to use it a lot for more stuff

the kids one has a handle and thicker casing and I think they have a no quibble returns policy if it gets broken - it's about twice the price though. not sure if it's unlimited returns/fixes or how long that warranty lasts but the product page on amazon should explain. I suppose it depends on how old the kids are and how good they look after stuff. I think the kids one is for younger kids really

Can anyone answer the following? Can it be used with chrome cast and nowtv ?

I bought my kids (2&6) the HD8 last christmas & purchased 2 rubberised cases in different colours to stop the arguments.

They have a kids mode but you can lock down the normal os with a pin for purchases, mature content etc.

We've side loaded the Google play store to give a little more variety and I can also use my credit from opinion surveys for any purchases. Added bonus

Both are still going strong after being thrown on the floor numerous times! Would definitely go for 10 if I was buying again. 😁👌

Ordered a 10 earlier today. Seems a great deal and hoping for great things from it!

HEAT added btw ☺
