What's the difference between 4k and 4k max?
    loftie's avatar
Probably slightly faster. The last time I looked however, the Max supported AV1, the other did not. AV1 is definitely going to be important in the future (possibly near future), as it'll be what replaces the current streaming format (h264). In reality, while some places do offer AV1 streaming such as Youtube , youtube will fall back on VP9 (fairly widley supported), or H264 (supported by pretty much everything) if you can't decode AV1.
So what the hell does that mean for consumers. AV1 does more with less, i.e. you get better quality video at the same bandwidth/data usage, or the same quality video for less bandwidth/data usage.

Personally, since it's £5 more, I'd get the Max. The rest of the additions (i've just noticed the table below) would make it easily worth it IMO. Better WiFi, more RAM, more CPU/GPU speed, and the addition of AV1 if that's still only on the Max.

Just a heads up, if you guys want BBC iPlayer in 4K the only Firestick that allows it is the Max and Cube, if you're not bothered with that then go for the standard 4K stick it's faster than the basic Fire TV and Lite sticks.

    Didn't know that, thanks

Can anyone help with where to get software , can only source paid for options and seems much

Going to cancel sky as this is better value overall

FYI my standard 4K sticks are slow as muck now so christ knows how bad the lite one will be. The Max I have is good but planned obsolescence so likely within the next 6 months when Max 2 comes out it will become unusable.

We all know it’s happening and manufacturers still think we are blind to it. Honestly I’d rather they just told us when they were going to make them suck so we can plan ahead.

    Bought 4k at £19 from
QVC couple of months ago. Cant be that hot.

    Thanks for posting the deal.

The Lite is not Right. Go for 4k if you can afford it.
    bryanhaines399's avatar
I got a lite during black Friday, then got a 4k from QVC not long after. The 4k wasn't noticeably faster, however it does allow me to exit Kodi (and other apps) and then go back into it without having to completely reload every time.

When I recently visited someone with an older firestick it was very slow. I don't know which version it was, but for me the age of the stick was the issue, so any comparisons being made should be based on comparative versions.

Amazon doing 20% trade in for an old Firestick as well which you can redeem instantly.

Handy if you've got a 1st gen knocking around somewhere
    gogboy's avatar
How does this work exactly do you need to be the original purchaser of it
  9. LazyDonkey's avatar
Worth checking your My John Lewis card as you may have a discount code - personally had a £5 Anniversary code (HIGHFIVE), so the MAX was £39.99.
  10. Dusty's avatar
Wouldn't mind one of these but Amazon really needs to sort the cluttered UI out. Google is for me out in front with it's CCWGT effort. (edited)
    trojanasante's avatar
Yeah Custom shortcuts to Bluetooth setting would be nice 💯

I'll keep waiting for sub £40 again for the Max. Want to buy another couple of them
    DisagreeableRunt's avatar
Same. I have one Max in my main room and wouldn't mind replacing the two original 4K models in other rooms.

Does anyone know when this deal price expires? I submitted a trade-in, but amazon won't provide me the 20% voucher until they've received and verified my trade-in device.
    speediemc's avatar
I came here to ask the same
  14. josh971's avatar
Hi, is the only difference between fire stick and fired stick lite the ability to change the TV volume on the remote please? (edited)
  15. delz's avatar
    This, or CC Google TV?

    Amazon 4k or Roku 4k?
    MSI's avatar
Amazon 4k firestick is better choice
  17. Erin_McGinley's avatar
I bought a 4K last week which is annoying, but messaged them and they refunded the price difference
    billallme's avatar
That's unusual for Amazon, as when I've raised a price difference issue they've asked me return and reorder
  18. mikeizz's avatar
Meh. Suppose cheaper than standard but normally over the year you can get for less than this......

Got the firestick 4K for half this price a couple of months ago from QVC.

Over the years i normally buy 4k firestick for family or friends and always get it for sub £30 (normally from Amazon on offer)
  19. feenics's avatar
Thanks, been waiting for a deal to get another of these. 😃

Got one of the Max when QVC had them for £20, shame they haven't repeated the same.

I quite fancy one of the new remotes but will be damned if I'm paying £35 for it! Anyone seen any deals on those ever? (I keep looking but cannot see anything) (edited)
    Mackerel80's avatar
Can you not order a Firestick Lite and get one in this deal?
  25. greatnameuk's avatar
Is this that cheap..?. Wanted a lite for less than £20 😝
Have to get another one as someone somehow broke it... It don't come on at all? (edited)
  26. nicoolauk's avatar
Thanks, I have been waiting for one of these too
  27. yeababyyea's avatar
    Has max been cheaper previous??
    trojanasante's avatar
    Yes £37.99 Black Friday week
  28. BlackCats2112's avatar
Been thinking about getting one of these as old Roku box loses connection constantly. Standard Fire Stick should do the job, right? Only watch Netflix, Prime, NOW TV and other catch up apps. Tele isn't 4k...

Update: Thanks for your replies. Will go for the 4k then as I think the tele is due an upgrade soon too (edited)
    tjc2005's avatar
Yeah be fine. I'd always get the better one for the bit extra though tbf. It's faster.
  29. hedgemonkey9874's avatar
Amazon is asking if I want to trade in both my old firesticks. I assume I still only get 20% even if I trade both?
  30. AamirQuazi's avatar
Thanks op - old 4k on the projector stuck on a boot loop and nothing will fix it…

so bought a 4k max (as i have wifi 6 on my unifi 6 AP) from currys for the same price - just so i could get topcashback vouchers + cashback… and collect it this evening!!
    mattk's avatar
Should have traded in your broken 4k for 20 percent off.
  31. SJ01's avatar
    Buy asap
  32. McShane's avatar
Been waiting for a price drop on the 4K Max. Shame you don't get the 20% discount straight away, won't bother trading in my old 2nd generation model. I'm sure I can flog it somewhere for a tenner anyway!
  33. mals's avatar
    Thanks OP

    nearly bought one last week.

can confirm the give you the 20% trade in straight away

Brought the max down to £35.99

    speediemc's avatar
How did you get the 20% straight away?

Noticed the TiVo 4k stick (from Amazon USA) can also be had for about £45 delivered

That's a better product than any fire stick, IMO
    josh971's avatar
Interesting, do you have one to use for live TV in the UK? (edited)
  35. avid.fan's avatar
Can someone explain the benefits of this to me? - I appreciate if you've got a 'non-smart' tv then these would be a life saver....but is there any benefit in using one of these compared to the standard apps on a smart TV, assuming it provides all the apps??

I have an old(ish) LG tv (~6 years or so), and it's fine but the Youtube streaming app seems to have a very odd (I assume manufacturer specific) issue where it freezes, then does a fast-forward to catch up the picture...if one of these can solve that then I'm in....
    MusicmanJP's avatar
I have a brand-new Samsung smart TV and just added a firestick 4k max. The UI is much faster (although just as bloated with ads) but crucially lets me side load apps such as Stremio for Real Debrid.
  36. mittromney's avatar
Says Max arriving 04/03 on my order?
    SnoopZ's avatar
The website says tomorrow for me delivered by Amazon, I've not ordered though.
  37. bodolf's avatar
I stream from my phone to the tv using Google Chromecast, would this perform or the job better??
    SnoopZ's avatar
Well you wouldn't have to faff around streaming from your phone with a Firestick, just make sure you get atleast a 4K one. If you want BBC iPlayer in 4K you must get the Max or Cube as they only support it.

Sideloading apps is a big plus with a Firestick I don't know if you can do that with the Chromecast. (edited)
  38. Gavster2002's avatar
The Max was £37.99 on offer last November so there can be better saving on it in future. Maybe easter will have a better sale.
    Lexeus's avatar
I am in Spain and the Max was €31 at one point at Christmas so the uk prices have a lot of room to drop…
  39. helal94's avatar
    That remote does look nice
    SnoopZ's avatar
2 of the buttons are useless if you don't have Netflix or Disney though.I believe there are ways to use these 2 buttons with other apps but last time I tried it wasn't possible for sideloaded apps, I was annoyed I couldn't do it with TeaTV, the other 2 buttons can't be changed to do anything else.

I wouldn't bother upgrading from a 4K stick just for those buttons, I only did it for the Max to get BBC iPlayer in 4K and I was craving to spend a little money. (edited)
