True! I was thinking it looks nothing like the station. But yes you’re probably right

ding

Think you'll find that the stay put policy was made at a far higher level than the firefighters on the pumps, and if the block of flats wernt wrapped in a flamable jacket then the stay put policy would of worked, the fire service are being used as a scapegoat for corrupt councillors and mp's who probably received back handers

Mark300ZX

I thought it was the flats in front of the station?

I had my hfsc (house fire safety checks) done on Monday due to having to have it done as me and my fiance are about to start fostering. I thought it would be one guy in a car that turns up but nooooo I was wrong, I looked out the living room window as something caught my eye and a fire engine had pulled up outside our house and three firemen got out.. I called them Monday morning and they were here just after 2pm that day.

you need to ring your local fire service they should do free checks and sometimes fit smoke alarms. thanks op

we had a same problem with ours , a hammer did the trick

makkax1

We had 2 of these 10yr alarms fitted. Our ancient square battery ones, with missing covers were removed and stuck in a box in the airing cupboard. A couple of months later I left a pan on in the kitchen, neither of the Fire Brigade fitted ones went off but the old ones, which were behind 2 closed doors, did. Tested the new ones with the smoking pan right underneath them with the same result. When you pressed the test button they appeared to be working though so until the pan incident we had full faith in them. Very dangerous. My mother's didn't work either and she'd had hers over a year. Don't know who's in the pocket of the smoke alarm company but I think this is a genuine scandal. There's even reports of these causing fires! I complained to the Fire Brigade asking them to check every one that they'd fitted. They just said they'd replace mine with some more. No thanks.

This always available

thank you very much. my friend had a small fire last week,so shes going to do this now

Super deal, but I agree that the fire service alarms don't seem to be of decent quality. We had the fire service check just under two years ago and they were really helpful and fitted the two smoke alarms too. Ours started bleeping at 4.30 am one morning for no reason. Tried everything to hush it, reset and all that but in the end hubby was so annoyed that he went outside and put it in the bin! However, when he went back to bed he swore he could still hearing it beeping in his sleep. Needless to say, he got the hammer out to silence it in the end!! The other one is now beeping intermittently........ I need to ring them again!

Thanks OP for posting as not everybody knows about this service.

Does anyone know whether, if upon inspection they find that a rented property is unsafe, they can force a landlord to rectify the matter please? I ask because a friend of mine living in rented accommodation has been burgled recently and her landlady has still not fixed her backdoor or bedroom window - the backdoor being screwed shut which beggers belief.

pman12

We had this done a week ago, a whole big fire engine came around to our home, 3 firemen came in, inspected the house (one of the guys said my room had the safest layout of wires he has seen in a while) :p and then fitted two smoke alarms (top and bottom of the stair case). We originally bought some of those rubbish old fashioned smoke alarms but then we returned them since these ones installed are very modern looking and have a 10 year guarantee! I would recommend anyone to get these smoke alarms installed, not because they will save you £20-30 but because they will save you your life! ;)

Mark300ZX

Happy New Year! Thanks for the abuse, just to let you know you're wrong!

I also occasionally use a deep fat fryer and am definitely not a chav.We batter our own fish and have fish and chips a couple of times a month--yum yum. Thank you for the post.

All the best chefs use a deep fat fryer - I would have thought frozen ready meals were more suited to chavs than freshly peeled maris pipers fried properly !

They ain't fire detectors, they are smoke detectors....when you are in bed and you have a fire raging downstairs burning all the toxic foam in your furniture, then they will come in very useful. Have you seen all the adverts on TV about testing you smoke alarms???

in cheshire we have a target of 80 a month on average, week days we spend training and other stuff and weekend days are spent fitting smoke alarms, the watch before us delivers the leaflets to give 24 hours notice and with two pumps we can get 50-60 houses done in a day. follow the link if you live in cheshire http://www.cheshirefire.co.uk/publicsafety.asp?menuid=632

Confiteor

That's what you think, mate. I've heard they've been round your gaff every night you've been out with the lads for the last 18 months. Your GF is very conscientious when it comes to fire safety!

bargainluva

so to sum up its a great service for those who are too poor to fork out for a smoke alarm , or do not have the mental capacity/common sense to have any idea where to put them. I would imagine theres leaflets and websites to advise us where to position them if we have any doubts. so lets not be greedy..thats all. at least this thread has raised awareness of fire safety, so its at least been good for that.

pmcx9

without a doubt smoke alarms save lives however......... this "free" service does have a cost. in our brigade the powers to be shut down 2 stations and reduced the manning on 2 other stations in order to fund a taskforce of personnel to go out and provide for initiatives like this. if you live in the area that has lost a station you may now have a free smoke alarm but your delay in getting a fire crew to your burning house has greatly increased.

Mark300ZX

Just to clarify my stance, I am a big fan of smoke alarms I have seen them save lives and lives lost when there were none, but this could be easily completed by a two man team in a small van! Not depriving a rescue team of training, lectures and phys. ed .,required to do their job and rescue lives, and depriving an area of their emergency service.

I had a fire safety check last week. They fitted new smoke alarms and did a full safety check. When the the fire officer realised my boys are totally obsessed with fire engines/fireman etc he went back to his car and brought them stickers, tattoos, pens, pencils, little sticky cuddly thing, colouring books etc. A top service

Highly recommend everyone takes part in this offer EVEN if they have smoke alarms fitted. Parents had a 10yr old smoke alarm that only recently had a new battery fitted. When you press the test button the siren went of. Did diddly squat when I visited the parents one day... Dad was out and Mum was in the lounge thinking that a neighbour was having a bonfire. I investigated and discovered the upstairs thick with smoke. Got Mum out, dialled 999, and Fire Brigade where there within minutes. An electrical appliance had gone pop and set the bed on fire! They were surprised the smoke alarm hadn't gone off. They fitted 2 new units then I got them to my house the next day. In future when the battery goes flat, bin the whole fire alarm and get the local brigade around to fit new units. Rich

BigRonsDad

Apparently when you pay your council tax, the money you pay the fire brigade includes the cost of 2 smoke alarms. They come with a 10 year battery so you don't need to worry about them. The fireman told me you go on a register, and they come and replace them after about 8 years.

In Merseyside the Home Fire Safety Checks info can be found thus Checkplease telephone Fire Service Direct on: freephone 0800 731 5958 Alternately you can apply for a Home Fire Safety Check online ]click here to fill in the necessary form. They were doing random fire safety checking in my area and called, and inside 15 minutes had installed 3 smoke alarms, one on each floor of my house. It'd have taken my bloke at least half a day!! I'd originally had a smoke alarm but it was mains powered and kind of attached to my house alarm, and they said that the battery ones were better in the event of mains power going down.

Ruzzy

Chip Pans are extremely risky, convince them both to have visits and when the crew come round they will go through all kinds of safety (electrical socket overloading etc.) and as ive said in some cases provide a deep fat fryer. Im like you i don't fry anything, in my opinion baked or grilled food tastes better, its healthier and defiantly safer.

Athravan

Both my mother and my grandmother (who's 90) uses a chip pan (and we're in South Wales too, maybe you'll be seeing us soon!) I know my mothers is almost always full and boils alarmingly sometimes. I myself try to take a healthier option and don't deep fry anything so have never used a chip pan as I oven bake, but I will try and convince them to invest in a proper fryer, didn't realise it was a big risk to be honest

flstivvy

This post reminds me... Need to go check the batteries and clean the sensors in the smoke alarms..
