Firefox Quantum [Windows - Mac - Linux]

Today the team over at Mozilla released the official version of Firefox Quantum.

They say it's 2x faster (compared to Firefox 52, released a year ago) and is 30% lighter than Chrome. I've had a go and its definitely much faster than older versions.

Firefox has always been free, but felt unoptimized in comparison to Chrome/Edge and other browsers. This new version may be worth a mention at least?

Not a deal.

Must have extensions for firefox:

Link Cleaner - removes crap from urls. An alternative is Neat URL
Google search link fix - Prevents Google and Yandex search pages from modifying search result links when you click them
uBlock Origin - best adblocker out there, lightweight too
HTTPS Everywhere - Automatically use HTTPS
Decentraleyes - Protects you against tracking through "free", centralised, content delivery
Cookie AutoDelete- deletes cookies from all sites unless you whitelist them although self destructing cookies was much better
Video Downloader professional- download pretty much anything with this
Video DownloadHelper - same as above
h264ify - Try h264ify if YouTube videos stutter, take up too much CPU, eat battery life, or make your laptop hot.

I would also suggest checking out THIS and THIS. (for those who are looking for privacy friendly alternatives)
Use THIS to find if the popular extensions are available on firefox quantum.

EDIT: Complete List Here

As for this latest version, while it is fast and the new design is amazing, it just uses too much cpu on macOS (same with ALL previous versions). I always ended up going back to chrome after like few hours use but with this version i use it as my daily browser. I just wish it was optimised for macOS

EDIT: Chrome Alternatives

Decentraleyes
HTTPS Everywhere
Redirector - Similar to Clean Links/Neat URL
The Great Suspender - Simply amazing. Suspends tabs when you dont use it for set period (defined by user). Very useful if you have many tabs open
uBlock Origin
uBlock Origin Extra - Some sites ask you to disable your adblock so this tries to bypass that. Created by same developer as above
WebRTC Control - Protect your private IP address
Video Downloader professional
Video DownloadHelper
Vanilla Cookie Manager

It installs over your existing version (it's a formal update, so click on 'Help' -> 'AboutFirefox' and it will check and update for you if you'd rather get it that way rather than via the links provided).
It's messed with the colour settings and disabled a couple of unsupported add-ons, but otherwise the majority of my setup seems the same....

You can't keep zoom settings i.e 120%, always keep reverting back to default when you clear history (very annoying).

It is an update to the standard FF ( 56 to 57 ), and will automatically update eventually anyway. they just named it quantum due to being such a big leap in speed. The problem is from the removal of the old legacy plugins. but is definitely faster

Thanks - Firefox has become a memory hog on my laptop compared to Chrome so will give this a go.

Tks for posting will give it ago.

I hope it manages memory required for large amts of tabs better; anybody know a good addon / way of seeing what scripts are running within firefox?

firefox is awesome. Keep the web free.

Not a deal.

I guess you dont like his quantum theory

Nice one, OP, thanks!

Switched back to Firefox a few weeks ago due to Chrome version clashes. But then lasted about 2 days before I gave up on it. Will try it out and see how it compares.

2 tabs open on FF56!

Firefox used to be great but became slow and bloated over the years. Will be interesting to see how much of a difference this one makes.

Brave browser is another alternative worth trying if you want blocking of ads and trackers.

Yet they still haven't solved the issue with P3 (and nor have Chrome), so it's back to Safari

Loads faster, thanks for pointing out OP...Heat

But what type of pages are they? Media heavy pages with alot of plugins?

This is what I get on FF Quantum with 3 HUKD pages open:

Same pages with Chrome:

32433482-0FcSE.jpg

seems quicker and uses far less RAM but disappointed some of my favourite addons no longer work such as:-

noscript

tab mix plus

colorful tabs

ublock

I've been running the beta for a bit. Noticeably quicker. Looks nicer too in my opinion. The Android version is so much better.

uBlock Origin. Use this instead.

I like Firefox Focus for mobile and tablet, super lean...

Cheers although opted for adblock plus

tab mix plus was superb though as I could switch tabs just by mouse hover rather than having to click on them

at least lastpass is working

I use Ublock Origin with Quantum, Not the alternative "Ublock", myself, and have not run into any issues at all (just pointing out if others didn't know there are two different versions)

Aside, If anyone is wondering "What is Ublock Origin?", it compliments the speed increase in Firefox Quantum by blocking scripts/trackers from running in the background.

Be aware that most addons havent been updated and WONT work with this update.

I have locked my FF install at 56.01, so it wont update; as too many of the security programs I rely on havent been fully tested, or an update release date posted.

Some of these speed improvements were released with FF 56.01, and made it MUCH faster than the previous versions; at times it felt like a lot more than twice as fast, especially when launching the program. FF feels like it did back when it was launched, fast.

Frustratingly basic. I know that's the point. Firefox Quantum on Android is so much better than the older version.

I've got quite a few Chrome extensions (about 9 or 10) installed which open along with every Chrome page - that may explain the difference?

HTML5 test in the Peacekeeper benchmark:

FFQ:

Chrome (61.0.3163.100):

32433668-eLFMO.jpg

Not noticing much difference in normal use though. Subjectively, they seem to load/render pages at about the same speed.

Edge:

Take the benchmarks with a pinch of salt though - it may be the case that certain browsers simply favour certain benchmarks.

Just updated it on my Minix Windows mini-PC and it's significantly faster at rendering pages. I was using Edge as my default browser as FF was sluggish but this has allowed me to move back to FF now.
