Seems like good deal but never heard of Big Johns

Wouldn't say it's 'national' as they are only in Birmingham ;-)

Wow you lucky people in Birmingham....even without the offer!

Down south we have to pay about £4.40 for that

Enjoy

£4.40? ouch. they must make a fortune

yeah youre probably right, i highly doubt this is cod but even so i think it tastes just as good myself

cant even get a bag of chips for a quid in pompey

good for those in birnimham but no good for the rest of us

Good price, they used to do this years ago at Shirley branch when it first opened, but that was every day of the week.

Do chippies in england still leave the scales on battered fish, I had one years ago and didnt like it, I'm used to having them removed.

Big John's is only in Birmingham? And I always thought it was up there with BA and Rover

best cod and chips in the country ' GRANTS' in hayes middx but very expensive about £5.50 a plate dependent on the size of fish but normally hangs off either side of the plate

scales ???? skin one side usually not scales:?

Added location to the title.

£5 in doncaster for some really nice cod and chips from 'fish bits' up from football stadium, best in donny! loads of good chipys up in yorkshire, miles better than the southern chipys and we have gravy, why dont they have gravy??? oh and no scales, skin or bones!!

Big Johns is quite possibly the worst chip shop franchise imo. Chips taste like cardboard. (Haven't voted btw)

dcx_badass;5782497

Depends on the place, I don't like the skin, my local removes it.

Was in Chichester years ago, nice place and was starving after work got a fish tea and didnt know it had skin on it under the batter, to be honest it didnt bother me the taste until I saw it and I am quite a visual person with my food and that put me right of it's like finding a hair in your food.

Here are all the branches on the website ]Big Johns

we pay around £5 in kenilworth, warwickshire! rip off

Nothing wrong with catfish as long as they don't claim it's something else. I'd agree that Haddock is much better though.

dcx_badass;5782325

Cod is horrible anyway, Haddock is much nicer, fish & Chips round here … Cod is horrible anyway, Haddock is much nicer, fish & Chips round here are about £3.80 - £4, much nicer than the crap down south though.

People on this thread who think that fish & chips are the indescribable muck that exists in (for example Birmingham, but many other places too!) don't even know what you are talking about, they just have no reference point - you might as well be saying it in Serbo-croat!
Having tried a lot of dross in the Midlands, since moving here in 1997, Big Johns are among the poorer end of a very poor excuse for fish & chips, and I find the prospect of being paid 99p to eat them a revolting enough thought.

Unfortunately though, even in the last bastion of real Fish & chips, Yorkshire, the real product is starting to die off too, jsut eabout every time I venture North, I find disappointment waiting where once there was excellence - eg. While out & about, I went to a previously perfectly good place in Richmond, only to find the now nationally standard vegetable oil, limp soggy yellow batter and almost-putrid Cod rather than the previous proper Beef dripping, ultra fresh Haddock and crisp dark golden batter! The place was doing good trade despite a proper place across the Market place still doing the real item! In no time, the kids will get used to this standard, and will expect the vile fluorescent gloopy junk that exists everywhere else :-(

i went to morrisons yesterday and they have a promo on at the moment half price haddock on the fresh fish counter i bought a whole fillet for £1,
i think this promo finishes this weekend.

Drive down the road to St Johns in Warwick and you will pay a good bit more than that, after standing in a queue too! "National award winners" too - CRAP like almost all in the Midlands :-(

best place for fish and fish is in worthing ar kens fish and chips! hehe

lucky brummies we pay £5.10 for fish and chips in the northeast

I'd be happy to grab a few of these and post them on to anyone not able to grab this bargain at Big Johns.

You might still be getting proper ones though - if you haven't tasted Midlands Fish & Chips, believe me, 99p is too much!

Oddly last time I was in the North East, I got some moderately decent ones in Carrville Durham, and they were VERY cheap, and in the past when I lived in Sunderland, they were much cheaper on average than further south.

I thought the vegetarians had eaten all the fish??? :?

WARNING

Be careful if you click the link through to the Big Johns website - it looks like a phishing site to me

Ps Please note smiley at end of above comment.

Wish I lived in Birmingham, ok well maybe not, but just on Friday then. Try and get haddock it has far fewer parasitic worms than Cod. Cod is disgusting in this respect. Found a few worms in my fish once, dead though so it's all ok

It ashames me to say this as a Yokshire man, but come further up North, Marshall's at Tynemouth is probably the best one in the country, or even my local one in Newcastle upon Tyne is pretty damned good, fried in dripping and tastes fantastic. Bit further down south, The Magpie in Whitby doesn't have huge queues without a good reason either.

Not quite the worst, but pretty bad. Expect a high ratio of black bits and manky potato. Nowhere near as bad as Manchester, which has quite the worst potatoes I have ever seen in any chippy anywhere in the UK.

They vary a lot, though. The chippy in Streetly village is very good. Most chips in Birmingham tend to be of the greasy, soggy variety, which I don't like. For some reason, in Bimingham they won't let you put salt and vinegar on the chips yourself.

Anstruther fish bar is great, but often just get mine from Pittenweem to avoid the crazy queues and tourists!

Useless trivia: did you know that Bjork's job, before she became a singer and roughian, was to pick the worms out of the fish in a factory!

LOL at everyone recommending their local chip shop .... which is irrelevant to the other 60 million of us.

What I want to know is ... why is fish more expensive at coastal towns than in the middle of the country? Surely their is less travel cost

Cheapest in the local to me is £5.50. But, they do use proper haddock and the chips are normally quite good.

If I went into the city centre, plenty of choice, but no-where near as nice. I think it's the fact it's a fairly small town and there's two of them within about quarter of a mile on the same road forces them to actually keep quality up

Or... it's maybe that the coastal towns buy local, fresh, good quality stuff.. and the other places simply buy in bulk at the lowest price?

This is true. Also when you say no to wanting salt and vinegar (I prefer to take them home and put salt on myself because they always put far too much on) you are often given a very funny look.

I have come across a few that will start piling on the salt and vinegar BEFORE asking whether you want it.

My nearest chippy is a Big Johns and I have to say they are really horrible. Some of the worst chips I have ever put in my mouth. I am often amazed how busy they are.
