Ive never fished before but fancy fishing when I go camping with my lad, what do people think to this as a starter rod... cheap enough at a tenner, would I need anything else? (with the obvious exception of bait

Hmmm... Reel is not the best, probably several uses but with the fact you are using lures/spinners then it will break in no time as the gears are shockingly poor quality, if anyone is looking to buy a starter set then join a fishing group online, facebook has lots of them, get some good advice from there, really though you can pick up decent kit for a little more money than this plus kit that is required for the fishing you will be doing - course/carp/sea, like i say though this is £9.99 paid to be disappointed - use that money on tried and tested kit, avoid any cheap and nasty starter kits even the branded ones.

It's £9.99 for a laugh with your kid. If it's rubbish, it's rubbish. I'm sure you'll both have some good memories from it. Have fun on the camping trip Mudds. Hope the weather's good, as it's been a poor summer so far

If you intend fishing on lakes and rivers you will need a licence.
As jenn101 said the combos are poor. Pay a little bit more and you will get something something a lot better. Ask round at work (fishing is Britain's most popular participation sport) you will possibly be invited to a session. Of you visit angling trust.net

i have bought lots of fishing gear from lidl and aldi beachcasters most of the time so me and friends can have a day out of london fishing off a pier yes the stuff is cheap but it works so if you want just to have some fun go for it and im sure if you ask other fisher persons you meet on your trip they will be happy to help you out.

Soz on my phone. There are free family fun sessions all round the country. They are for all the family not just dad's & lads & really are fun.

Thanks for all the comments, will look out for taster sessions and may just see if my father in Law has some spare kit that I can borrow for a bit of private fishing lake fishing whilst I am camping...

a bit concerned when you state "private lake" fishing. even if you owned the water and stocked the fish at your own expense you will still need a rod licence (it's a rod licence not a fishing licence) under 12's are exempt . When the EA bailiffs come round they normally give you a chance to phone and get a licence, but not always. Fine in court are "up to" £5k. and usually come in at around £2k.
