f.lux A neat program to automatically adjust your screen display in order to help protect your eyes and help you sleep better

Very recently I discovered this program. Had a look on here and it hasn't been posted for a few years. Making a new thread to make people aware or remind them of it.

F.lux is a great bit of free PC software that adjusts your monitor brightness according to local sunrise and sunset times easing strain on your eyeballs. Bright during the day, dim during the evening. Not sure how true it is about where they state it helps you sleep (?) but i can tell you it really does help relax your eyes when staring at a screen in indoor lighting.

Older threads state it can be used for PC or Mac. Macflux looks to be the Mac version.

There is a root only version for Android.play.google.com/sto…_GB

Edit:

From the f.lux website

  • Set your location. f.lux works a lot better if it
knows when the sun rises and sets. The sun is the brightest light we
see every day, so setting this up matters a lot for understanding your
    circadian timing
  • Choose your usual wake time. If you wake at a different time each day, you can pick a time on the earlier side
  • Adjust color settings so it looks as you like it. Just move the big slider to adjust, and f.lux will learn what you like
  • You can set f.lux to “disable” automatically for apps where color quality is critical
  • To quickly disable for an hour, use Alt-End

Something similar is integrated into Windows 10 called Night Light.
Been using this for years. It's cool to turn off flux at night, after using it for ages over a period and see how much your eyes strain without flux active and how much they relax with flux

I use f Lux on Windows -( think it's better than the inbuilt Windows 10 function)

And Twilight on android. Works well.

Its a great bit of software that I have installed for a long while now. Does help when working on the laptop and PC at night time. You don't realise how bright the screen can be. Recommended.

I used to jailbreak my iphone JUST for this. Now iOS has it's own version of f.lux built in.

It's a very useful application and it deserves recognition.

Heat from me
As above, I used to use this, but it's built into Windows 10 now...

Are you sure about this? I've been using this when playing games in the evening and I've never noticed it switching off.
When using this I would be playing games and and soon as this kicked in my pc would lag to sh*t. Had to remove it but it did help strain
All this does is reduce the contrast, you're better off turning down the brightness on your screen. This is only useful as a hack for situations where you've bought a screen whose backlight doesn't go low enough for the environment you're using it in.
For me if I go back to normal screen from this at around 9 ish my eyes hurt so I do use this a lot, thanks for sharing OP

I think there is a toggle to tell it to do this in settings

Been using this for years. Great piece of kit. Worth noting if you do colour sensitive work it's very noticeable. Often forget its on though until the partner points out "Why is the screen so red" As someone who unfortunately finds all their productivity at night it works wonders.

thank you for telling me, i had been using f.lux for 2 months now and had no idea of night light lol
I have this installed but I always find myself disabling it. Thanks OP
Great stuff, after I have to switch it off to do some graphic work, my eyes go in cubes and there is so much more strain..

Windows had made it before f.lux came out
Been using this for about a year now and I think that it is very good and has many more features compared to the Windows one already on computers

If it messes with your computers performance, use blue light glasses in the evening to do the same thing:

Use this at work. Always get "errr your screen looks weird" comments

I hung on to that old jailbreak for 2 years because i needed flux more than apples latest emoji whateverthecrap sells phones... then they stole the idea and rebranded it as new an innovative.

All the best ios updates used to come from the best jailbreak apps. (Folders/keyboards/toggles/flux) i think its no cooncidence that since jailbreak is dead - iOS has become more stagnant!

Flux is awesome.

Well seems to for me. so when i have been playing pubg / destiny / fortnite / overwatch, Ingame is fine and when I drop to the desktop it kicks back in. Let me check to see if I set something extra
Been using it for years great app
My pixel xl has a similar function built in, it puts a progressive red filter over the screen in the evening starting at a time I set, and that way I don't have to have location settings on.
Simply a must when using a screen at night, saves your eyes big time.
f.lux A neat program to automatically adjust your screen display in order to help protect your eyes and help you sleep better in order for you to be more rested next day and help you drive your car and help to be more aware in order not to hit any pedestrians.

You could have just said "f.lux saves lives"
