FlyBe from Manchester to London Southend up to 3 flights per day, most £26-33 each way, cheaper than train

This is a new route, starting on the 29 October. I know Southend is an Essex coastal resort but Southend Airport has a railway station as soon as you get off the plane (hardly any walking), most trains from there to london take 53 minutes and it's £16.30 day return, less with railcards. Of course if you're visiting Essex or the east side of London it's very convenient. Worth a look! The first flight arrives at Southend at about 9AM so you could be in London (city) for just after 10am. The train from Manchester to London at that time is £168 for a single.

Sorry but how can Southend be classified as a London airport

May also be useful if flights from Manchester to (anywhere abroad) are cheaper than flights from the usual London airports to (anywhere abroad) though baggage allowance is virtually nil! And surcharges are expensive particularly over 25Kg

Technically he is correct.
Southend is in Essex, is on the coast and is still a major tourist destination for people from London East End.

Shame it wasn't for this Saturday . Bury FC are away at Southend and I could of gone .

Think this would be good for connecting with cheap flights.

I don't think it would be ideal for going into London as the train takes too long from Southend. You're looking at 1hr beforehand in Manchester airport, then 1hr on the plane, 15 mins to disembark perhaps and get through the terminal and then another 53 mins on the train to London. Not including the time taken to get to the Man airport beforehand.

Although I agree the walk up fare is expensive, advance tickets can usually be bought for £30 ish and the train usually takes over 2 hrs which would still be quicker than taking the plane.

I suppose if you want to visit the Sunny delights of Southend then this is ideal.

Going off topic a bit but that little photo is of Salford Quays which is in the city of Salford. I doesn't say much about the city of Manchester that they couldn't find a suitable photo of that city to illustrate it and had to use a photo of the city next door instead .

Good deal

TRUE!!!, hahahahaha.

But in all honesty, that be irony for you I guess?.

And more 'classic' forms of a similar irony would be some of these also ...

London Stansted Airport?.

London Gatwick Airport?

London Luton Airport?

LegoLand London Windsor?

And ...

Do you also smell the common theme here?, lol.

Yep, there be irony allllll round like?. :-)

Am doing this from beginning of Nov. Don't think it'll be long until flybe goes bust though

There is a direct train from outside the airport to London Liverpool Street, it takes about an hour

I wouldn't use Flybe.

In my experience, because most of their flights out on Manchester use turboprop aircraft, they tend to cancel or delay flights at the first slight gust of wind. According to a mate who works as a travel agent, their nickname in the industry is FlyMaybe

there is a chance Flybe may follow Monarch into bankruptcy, shares fell 19% yesterday, BEWARE...

Maybe technically it is, but as a resort destination on the east coast of Essex, it`s not on my bucket list

I tried making a booking to Amsterdam, I couldn`t understand why one way from Southend was much more expensive than the other way until I saw the flight plan which one way involved flying to London City (I think), then Manchester, then Amsterdam. For some reason the flight back was direct!

Always amuses me a bit when people start their comment with an apology for the rest of it.

London Stansted, London Luton and London Gatwick are also outside London. Luton in Bedfordshire, Gatwick is Crawley and Stansted near Bishops Stortford is at least as far away as Sarfind.

I think Southend only just about qualifies as on the coast, being some way into the Thames Estuary and Westcliff being the bit next to the water.

Thanks for the geography lesson when is the next one?

It's not only Southend which shouldn't be classified as London .... All of them except Heathrow and city IMO

By the way time young check in and gets through security, it will benefit quicker to get go by train.

Flybe propeller airplanes can take off and land in stronger wind than jets aircraft! I remember my flybe flight being one of the only one departing during last year gales.

That might be the case, but in the experience of myself and friends who fly often to Holland for music events, they are normally the first to cancel or delay flights in strong winds.

Would transfers / security not last longer than actually driving
