I have used this since 2007, and it is amazing, its a crowdsupported global WiFi hotspot network,

It works on a sharing basis, so if you agree to share some of your broadband at home with strangers, you are able to get some free wifi when you are out and about on return!

It creates a seperate public wifi network for guests, keeping your personal network completely seperate, and secure. With this Fon router you can even setup the bandwidth you want to share with your guests!! - from as little as 256kbps

This new version also works as a WiFi signal extender for those who have low wifi signal at home, you can use one of these to extend your wifi, and share a little wifi at the same time!

It has iOS and Android apps, to log you in automatically when you are around a Fon network,

According to their website, they have over 12 million wifi spots around the world!

Once I said I was in the UK the site implied that you either had to have BT as your ISP or buy a voucher. Seems from the direct link that the tech allows you to just buy the box and you can become a FON user. Can anyone clarify that you can buy this box and use it with say Sky, Orange, Zen, Virgin etc?

Yup it will work with any ISP and will work with your current router (not replacing it)...

Not sure if it would be against any term of service or acceptable usage policy...

My device is now sharing from Portugal but I had this working with Virgin for a year and a half with no issues...

Thanks Chilangopt, I'd searched the site and found corp.fon.com/en/…/bt which implies BT is needed although I understand from how thus works it should be ISP independent. I expect as BT are a partner it is in their interest to push BT. So great to know it works for other ISP. I'll give it a go, have some heat.

It has to work with other isp as BT has it built into their routers and auto turned on.

I have (BT) Fon through a BT business account. It comes in handy sometimes but I rarely get a good reliable connection these days

I Will edit this once I get to a proper browser and remove the voucher if.it's not working anymore... if anyone finds working one let me.know

Been using for over a month now.
By buying this and running it through your own router (I'm on virgin) you immediately become a fon user.
Now you can log into anyone else doing the same as you.
Looking on the app map there are hundreds of people in my areas using which is perfect as her indoors works in an area with poor mobile reception but perfect fon.
Bt-fon and fon are completely different entities as missus has bt wifi with her EE account and it doesn't work with bt-fon.

I'm looking for wifi access at our flat in the south of France. We do not have a landline broadband connection installed as we have always used our mobile phones. Does this mean that I cannot use Fon? Also, have tried a 50% off voucher code but it is not accepting it. Thanks for any help.

code not working, gutted if I've missed this

Definitely not working - tried again today with no joy - upper or lower case.

Same here, code not working and was gonna purchase one at that price :-(

This is a blast from the past! I remember setting up an original Fon and Fontenna for a friend with DD-WRT, so he could get all the free WiFi or Open WiFi in his area as he couldn't get a phone line. Hot from me.

As the others have said voucher not working here either, gutted!
