HMV have got a few Foo Fighters CD's at £4.99.

Sixth album from probably the most recognizable and popular band in American rock follows 2005's double set 'In Your Honour' and 2006's unplugged live effort 'Skin And Bones'. This release features a strong 70s stadium rock influence and sees the band letting rip and rocking out, with occasional moments of calm which highlight the depth and maturity of Dave Grohl's songwriting. Recorded with Gil Norton, who produced their breakout album 'The Colour And The Shape', it includes the single 'The Pretender'.

Track List
The Pretender

Forgoing the autocratic approach of FOO FIGHTERS, THE COLOUR & SHAPE allows the other members of the band a greater amount of influence, which quickly becomes evident. The punk-pop nuggets outnumber the thrashier moments on this record. Nevertheless, Grohl's time on the D.C. hardcore scene is neverfar from the creative process, whether it's the first squeals and squawks that pop up around the hooks and screaming vocals of "Hey, Johnny Park" and "My Poor Brain" or the alternating, Nirvana-like dynamics of "Enough Space". Elsewhere, the dreamy pop of "Walking After You" recorded in one take byGrohl at Washington, D.C. radio station WGNS) and "Up In Arms" rubs shoulders with the Catherine Wheelish sheets of guitar flowing through "My Hero".

Dave Grohl's opening post-Nirvana salvo, FOO FIGHTERS seems merely ordinary only in the wake of the historic, sweetly abrasive sensations that his previous band was famous for. Full of both lilting summer-breeze melodies and search-and-destroy guitar blasts, it helps present the case that Grohl's punk-pop blueprint just might be as forward-minded as Kurt Cobain's was, if slightly less grungy and a bit more blue-collar.
Arriving at its destination by coupling pure '60's guitar-pop with the hyperkinetic pace of hardcore, FOO FIGHTERS takes most of its song-hooks for a joyous high-speed ride. Tracks such as the prankster-ish kiss-off, "This Is A Call", and the meditative-but-bitter "Good Grief" are perfect pop nuggets, with turbo-jet guitars propelling them. There are brief respites from such reckless rolling: the glammy verse-chorus-bridge of "Alone + Easy Target", the near-folky "For All The Cows", the sweetly Squeeze-like "Big Me". Yet, these are only refueling stops for Grohl (who recorded most of the album alone) before he turns the engines back on and blows through alterna-pop's speed limits.
Named after UFO-like apparitions that U.S. fighter pilots claimed to have seen during World War II, FOO FIGHTERS chooses to ignore Grohl's tumultous real-life connections (there are few, if any, kiss-and-tell lyrics) in favour of establishing a separate musical identity. It's as though the songwriter felt there was little of Planet Nirvana worth rehashing, and decided to find a new (if similar) musical satellite to call his own.

Recorded live in Los Angeles, and incorporating an expanded ensemble, including violin, keyboard and percussion, 'Skin And Bones' is far more than simply a stripped-down collection of Foo Fighters hits. Each song has been carefully rearranged for the new instruments, which results in classic tracks such as 'Next Year' and 'Everlong' being given a new lease of life. Whilst Grohl and co are well known for their stadium-filling rock shows, this new format shows that Foo Fighters can be every bit as entertaining when unplugged in a more intimate setting.

The Colour and Shape is such an awesome rock album. every other Foo album I own has been bought on the strength of it and has always disappointed in comparison. It's also more representative of the band live, than the over produced stuf that followed.

An awesome record. Pure feckin rock. I can leave the rest though.

Might be worth checking out ESPG, seeing as it was produced by Gil Norton, the same guy who did TCATS.
