Don't know if everyone knows about this, it's all free but you can choose to have work done if the car needs it.

Q. What does the car safety inspection include?

Our expert technicians look at 15 safety points to keep you protected on the road. Here’s the full safety checklist:

Are horns and lights working correctly?
Are brake drums, discs and pads corroded, scored or distorted?
Are the brake hydraulic system, hoses and pipes free of corrosion, chafing and leaks?
Do the wheel callipers/cylinders work properly? Are they leaking?
Is the ABS warning light displaying?
Are handbrake linkages in good condition?
Do wheel bearings need replacing?
Are tyres in good condition? Is the pressure correct?
Have shock absorbers weakened?
Are there signs of wear, leaks or corrosion on the steering and suspension components?
Do the gearbox and clutch work correctly?
Are propshaft/drive shaft gaiters and joints secured?
Is the exhaust system secure and leak-free? Is it making a noise?
Q. Are there hidden costs?

Our car safety check is totally free. Our technicians may recommend repairs based on their findings, but they’ll NEVER carry out work or charge extra without asking you upfront.

Q. How long do the car safety checks take?

The time it takes to carry out a safety inspection depends on your car and its condition. Please allow up to an hour.

Halfords staff must be on commission. They always fleece my mum for something unnecessary every time.
Booked one to find that this is cold?!
The old saying, "There's no such thing as a free lunch", would definitely apply here.

Actually, in fairness to Halfords, last summer I went for an Aircon top up. They tried to top me up but my system had a fault they couldn't fix and despite spending time with the gas recharging etc they didn't charge me a penny and even recommended a garage that could help. This was the Halfords Nottingham Netherfield branch. So, full credit to them for that.

had one done yesterday on my mums car while it was in for a coolant flush/change.

Advised to replace 2 tyres, the water pump due to 'coolant staining' and the cam belts 'no reason given'.

To be fair, the tyres do need replacing. The water pump and the belt was done at the last service.
Booked one this Saturday. I will update you what happened.

Thanks for sharing - heat added.

Not sure why it's cold. Even if their prices are too high, there is no obligation to get things done at Halfords so I think they're offering a good service.
As I've said before, I wouldn't leave these incompetent idiots touch my car again after pulling my Audi apart just to fit a light bulb. Two supposedly 'engineers' later, damaged my car in the process and then gave up suggesting I go to the Audi main dealer at the same time trying to sell me other stuff I didn't need.

A recently bought a bike from Halfords.
Within 1 minute of them wheeling out the bike they'd just built for me.
A nut and bolt fell off the bike.

You don't have to get them to do the work.

perhaps not, but those who don't know better will be scared by their tactics and just pay them to do it

predatory tactics equals automatic cold from me

Just give you unnecessary advisories on a MOT.

If you've HID bulbs in some new cars, replacing the bulb resets the electrics and the main dealer has to sort it out.

Well that's a bit shine, if a copper pulls you over one night for a defective headlight and you end up having to get the AA out to put you on a low loader to take you home, because a tiny filament's blown!

On the continent you have to have spare bulbs by law, not much good if they can't be fitted by an average Joe.
How many hours does it take to change a Renault Meganes headlight bulb? No joke!

There is no obligation to buy anything, or to get any problems sorted at them.
You can just have your car checked and thank them for service while you can decide to have the work done somewhere else if it's really needed.
A regular service could be even worse in my opinion so you end up paying some checks that sometimes have not even been done, at least halfords will do them because they want to fix as many as possible, sometimes more that you actually need.
That been said, I can't see how this got so cold so no more posts from me from now on.
Cheers, Florin.

Because Halfrauds are the worst scammers when it comes to servicing work as people have quited above? Plus all cars have to go through MOT once, not sure the motivation for an individual to want to do it again except a 2nd time to get fleected particularly them as they seem pretty aggresive on their fails, as I have recently found.

They do seem to look for things on every MOT, of course its in there interest to have people in so they can "find" work.
I will let you know how it goes having my MOT done again by a "proper local" friendly garage, can't even be bothered taking back for retest with them as they have on major item on mine that I believe to be eithe exhaggerated or fabricated.

Don't take it personal or to heart though, I am sure you can find a more suitable deal in future.
