Posted 11th May
All EU citizens can get free tours of CERN. Having done it myself, it is highly reccommended if you like science!

Tours available from 11:00-13:00 and 13:00-15:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and from 13:00 - 15:00 only on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

  • Tours will be organized in groups of 24 visitors in the same language.
  • All tours are free of charge.
  • Due to the nature of our activities, we recommend that children be aged at least 12 years to join guided tours. Our permanent exhibitions are more suitable for younger children.
  • Minors MUST be accompanied by at least one adult.

Curiosity is as old as humankind, and it is CERN’s raison d’être. When the Laboratory was founded, the structure of matter was a mystery. Today, we know that all visible matter in the Universe is composed of a remarkably small number of particles, whose behaviour is governed by four distinct forces. CERN has played a vital role in reaching this understanding.

Trust me, you have exactly zero chance of getting anywhere near the ring …Trust me, you have exactly zero chance of getting anywhere near the ring itself!

Think I'll wait til they build one in Windsor, like they did with Legoland.
2 hours going round in circles, sounds like a trip with the wife navigating
ALL guided tours at CERN are free of charge and eligibility has nothing whatsoever to do with membership of the EU.CERN is NOT an EU institution. Most of it's member states are EU members also but, last time I looked, Israel and Switzerland were not in the EU. The UK is the second largest contributor to CERN at 16% of it's budget, exceeded only by Germany at 20%. Rest assured UK citizens are not going to be deprived of free tours.

"All EU citizens". I think people should get in quick then! Or maybe not as things are going so quickly in Brussels.

Yeah, going round in endless circles, bumping into people and getting your glasses & whatnot knocked off. All for a fraction of a nanosecond of pleasure. No thank you matey!

Apologies. I thought the joke (likening people to nuclei colliding at high speed & having tiny sub-atomic particles knocked off) was self-evident. Clearly I was wrong.

As we , I mean the citizens of the EU paid for it , it should be free anyway 🙏 :/

Depends where you go on the tour and when.
If you go when the collider is shut down towards the start of the year you see more.

I went down into the CMS, it was great!

Excellent!!. :-D
Are we allowed to discuss brexit in there

Lol, who knows?. But I doubt it ...
Cool, I want to see the Quarks .
Warning: do not (even as a joke) sneak off and put your face directly in the way of the laser beam thingy.

Didn’t seem to affect Theresa May
What is the largest group size to be allowed at anyone time?
I promise I am not part of an uber secret organisation that plans to activate CERN & cause hyperparabolic time-space discontinuation through the creation of a hyper dense spectral entity, back hole. This object would therefore slowly interact with earth's gravitational field acquiring more mass, also depending if Hawkings radiation does not work as predicted so will bring darkness.
I'll wait until they tour the UK

A hyperdense back hole can usually be resolved by an enema.

This is a joke. (I hope)
Dang I would happily pay money to tour CERN but for free, yes please!
Bargain! and a s many free WIMPs, if they exist, as you can eat/absorb.
Make sure you don’t step in any black holes or lean against any anti-matter
If you do go, you have to take Sheldon.

lol, flat earther

this isn't real either
Where does it specifically say 'EU citizens'? Switzerland isn't even in the EU!
Love one of the conditions !
  • Minors MUST be accompanied by at least one adult.
  • If they are my neigbours kids probably go for 5 per kid and some tranquilizers
I visited CERN last year. Highly recommended but also highly technical. The staff members do the tours. Need to book in advance as always very busy.

"but also highly technical."

For a sophisticated complex bit of kit, it being 'technical' is the very least I would expect of it. :-)

Around what point in time lady Year did you go? (Autumn, Winter, Summer, Spring, or whatever?), thanx.

I too wouldn't mind to see the guts of the beast, hehehehehehe.

When exactly (Month, etc), did you go?, or ... thanx.

Februaryish.

It can vary from year to year as i believe one of the main reasons is the cost of running. But it will depend what experiments are running.

The CMS is a very cool bit of kit. Seeing the synchrocyclotron (which is a museum piece) was also really cool if you are a physics nerd.

Nice!, not bad, thanx.

What's CMS?.

The compact muon solenoid. It is the detector most associated with CERN. It is one of the 2 large experimental detectors at CERN along with ATLAS. There is also ALICE which is much smaller
