Free £20 for opening ING Direct Savings Acc

58
Found 6th Feb 2009Made hot 6th Feb 2009
I received a leaflet through post from ING Direct and said if i open a new savings account (current interest rate 3.5%) i can get free £20.

All i had to do was to call on 0800 052 8867 and quote ING074.

I called and opened a new account in few minutes...

Its open to new customers only and you need to fund your account before end of february to get £20.

And by the way the leaflet was not personally addressed so i guess anyone can call and get this offer.

£20 is not great but if you are opening up a new account with them anyway then "every little helps"...

Cheers

Good rate that considering how terrible it is everywhere. I dont know too much about these but from what I recall they are online only in it ie no high street banks, hmmmmm I like something I can set fire too if they should go to the wall / and or try to steal your money that you have saved with them under the banner of the credit crunch. I need to find a good saving account, so thanks for the info - will have a good think on this one though :-)

Just recognise that your security blanked with ING is DIFFERENT to most UK institutions as they say "We are covered by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee Scheme. ". While I believe this is actually more generous than the UK FSCS £50K/registered-institution, it is in the Netherlands that any possible (however unlikely) claim would be administered.

I was lucky with Icesave to get my £250 back from the UK FSCS after a couple of months (without any interest post day of them failing of course).

Just closed my ING account.... wonder if I'd be able to get this....

hey-ho. They can only say no!

How much do you have to credit? How long does it have to stay with them for?

I don't want to induce panic, but surely you've got to ask questions why a company would offer such a short-term incentive to save with them? If they really wanted money for the long term, for sure they'd offer a decent headline rate and forget the stupid gimmicks.

wow £20 quid

Start saving from £1, with no minimum deposits or maximum monthly deposits required (for the account). Wonder if there are any terms with the £20 offer.

sounds great

Great deal 3.5% and £20, existing customers 2% and nothing else, think its time for achange

18 months ago they gave me £50, looks like the credit crunch is affecting the bonus.

Bank of england based rate has been cut to 1% a day ago. So, this 3.5% rate is unlikely to stay.

I noted the Promotion Code - but what is the Promotion ID they ask for on the online application form?

Well if you only need £1 to kick start this account then £20 seems fantastic to me, I mean how many years would it take for my £1 to earn that much interest at 3.5%? If there's no minimum deposits etc then what is there to think about? I'm sure I can rake a pound out of the car parking fund to give it a go, thanks - heat added!

Yes, I read that but, for my own reasons, I want to fill in their web application form which allows you to enter a promotion code but which also asks for a Promotion ID.

Be careful.... ING needed a bailout by the Dutch government a few weeks ago, so they're not exactly the most stable of banks, and as mentioned in one of the posts it is covered under the Dutch compensation scheme. so there might be problems getting money back.

so can I open this with £1 and pocket the £20? Is it that easy.

BEAWARE
On their website the interest rate is 3.5% variable for the first year only as you get a bonus. See below:-

* New ING Direct Savings Account customers can enjoy a high variable rate of 3.5% AER (including a 1.46% gross bonus fixed for 12 months)
* Our variable rate is 2.0% AER*.
* Move your money when you like, with no penalties or restrictions
* Start saving from £1, with no minimum deposits or maximum monthly deposits required

So make sure you check out other rates/accounts after the 1st year.

Opened an account now. Its linked to your current account. When you need to withdraw some money out its transferred back to your current account. It takes 3 working days to be credited. The special offer £20 is credited to your savings within 28 days after your savings account is up and running. Hope this helps!!

Yeah as far as i can see thats it. There are no minimum terms or minimum balance or any other condition with the account. you need to fund your account before 28th of february. you will need to send a cheque from an account to make first deposit as this is also used to confirm your identity.

Cheers

have you got to be over 18 to open an account ?

Just done this by phone. Took about 10 minutes or so.

You need to be over 18, a UK resident, and have a UK current account.

They ask you all the usual questions and set up your account. It can be opened with £1.

Your initial deposit should be by cheque, drawn from your LINKED account, and made payable to you with your ING customer & acocunt numbers on the back. You should send it to :

IIRC I was told to send off the cheque (they gave me the address...) - I have my numbers. Ballsed it up as the current account I linked I have no cheque book for. I need to either get a cheque book or ING do some security thing by calling me within the next 48 hours.

how about kaupthing edge customers who were forced to become customers?

That was ]in October. On the face of it, no different from the bailout that a lot of European banks have received, including the British ones. Dutch banks Fortis and ABN Amro were also nationalised. I would not worry too much, yet, as the Dutch govt. is encouraging the banks to concentrate on savings rather than loans at the moment. I doubt it would let ING go under any more than our government would let RBS go under.

It was October 2008. Around the same time when most of the UK banks also received Government funding:thumbsup:

In addition I doubt the UK Treasury would have allowed over 180,000 customer accounts to be moved from Kaupthing Edge and Heritable Bank if there was any question of its financial status.

As for compensation the Dutch limit is higher than the UK at €100,000 (currently over £87,000 compared to a paltry £50,000 in the UK). Your argument that there might be problems is based on what?

 All set up... thanks

They will only get 2% AER as do existing ING Direct customers.

I have just earned £20 for a few minutes on a freephone number and sending a £1 cheque payable to myself to a freepost address!. How easy was that?:)

I have noted on the ING website you can have up to 10 accounts, did the original flyer say a limit of one per person / customer number / address or nothing at all?
If not is that a potential £200?

Great deal, I doubt that you could open more than one account per person tho.

Anyone know whether the leaflet says anything about whether you were previously a customer? I was a customer about a year ago but closed my account. Might try re-applying and see what happens.

Welcome to hukd Jeeper.

F***** Kauphing Edge screwed it for me as I was aKaupthing Edge customer and as ING holds the Kauphing edge They won't open a new account for me. A free £20 goes begging! Heated.

doesnt appear to mention any bonuson the website , re online applic..just wonder if anyone tried putting the code quoted in the prom code box on the webpage

Can you just close it down after?

Yeah you can close it anytime after you have got the £20 paid into your account. I guess it will take about 4 weeks for the entire procedure...

Cheers

I did follow the online application up to the last possible point having used the code but at no point did it mention anything about adding a bonus, so I guess it is valid for phone applications only.

One more thought, if you have a joint account can your partner open an account in their own name for another £20 ?

They now request that you have an ID code as this was sent to specific regions.

Therefore the 'ING074' is not enough to register an account and get the £20.

Thank you, have opened my account.

Superb, just done it, they say it's ok even though I was previously a customer.

Very friendly customer service, makes a change for a bank!
